قَالَ لِي‌ أَ لَا أُعَلِّمُكَ دُعَاءً تَدْعُو بِهِ إِنَّا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ إِذَا كَرَبَنَا أَمْرٌ وَ تَخَوَّفْنَا مِنَ السُّلْطَانِ أَمْراً لَا قِبَلَ لَنَا بِهِ نَدْعُو بِهِ قُلْتُ بَلَى بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قُلْ- يَا كَائِناً قَبْلَ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ يَا مُكَوِّنَ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ يَا بَاقِي بَعْدَ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ افْعَلْ بِي كَذَا وَ كَذَا.

“The Imam said to me, ‘Should I instinct you with a supplication so you can pray? We are a family that whenever something causes us pain or fear a ruler for something we cannot cope with, we pray to Allah with this supplication.’ I said, ‘Yes, may Allah keep my soul and the souls of my parents in service for your cause

لَمَّا بَعَثَ أَبُو الدَّوَانِيقِ‌[1] إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَفَعَ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ حَفِظْتَ الْغُلَامَيْنِ بِصَلَاحِ أَبَوَيْهِمَا فَاحْفَظْنِي بِصَلَاحِ آبَائِي مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَدْرَأُ بِكَ‌[2] فِي نَحْرِهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْجَمَّالِ سِرْ ف

“When abu Dawaniq (Mansur, one of ‘Abbasi rulers) summoned Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) he raised his hand to the sky and said, ‘O Lord, You protected the two boys (mentioned in the Holy Quran in the story of Moses and Khidr) for the goodness and virtue of their father, protect me for the goodness and virtue of my ancestors, M

ذَكَرْتُ الصَّوْتَ عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فَرُبَّمَا مَرَّ بِهِ الْمَارُّ فَصَعِقَ مِنْ حُسْنِ صَوْتِهِ وَ إِنَّ الْإِمَامَ لَوْ أَظْهَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئاً لَمَا احْتَمَلَهُ النَّاسُ مِنْ حُسْنِهِ قُلْتُ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ وَ يَرْفَعُ صَوْتَهُ بِالْقُرْآنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ يُحَمِّلُ النَّاسَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ مَا يُطِيقُونَ

“Once accents and voices were mentioned before abu al- Hassan (a.s.) and he said, ‘Once Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) was reading and someone passing by suffered a shock due to the beauty of his voice. If the Imam were to manifest such reading people could not bear its beauty.’ I (the narrator) then said, ‘The Messenger of

قَرَأَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا أَسْتَمِعُ حُرُوفاً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَيْسَ عَلَى مَا يَقْرَأُهَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع كُفَّ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْقِرَاءَةِ اقْرَأْ كَمَا يَقْرَأُ النَّاسُ حَتَّى يَقُومَ الْقَائِمُ ع فَإِذَا قَامَ الْقَائِمُ ع قَرَأَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَى حَدِّهِ وَ أَخْرَجَ الْمُصْحَفَ الَّذِي كَتَبَهُ عَلِيٌّ ع وَ قَالَ أَخْرَجَهُ عَلِيٌّ ع إِلَى النَّا

23. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Hashim from Salim ibn Salamah who has said the following: “Once, a man read before Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) certain letters from the Holy Quran, while I was present, which were not like those that people read. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.)

لَا تَكُونُ الصَّدَاقَةُ إِلَّا بِحُدُودِهَا فَمَنْ كَانَتْ فِيهِ هَذِهِ الْحُدُودُ أَوْ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنْهَا فَانْسُبْهُ إِلَى الصَّدَاقَةِ وَ مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنْهَا فَلَا تَنْسُبْهُ إِلَى شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنَ الصَّدَاقَةِ فَأَوَّلُهَا أَنْ تَكُونَ سَرِيرَتُهُ وَ عَلَانِيَتُهُ لَكَ وَاحِدَةً وَ الثَّانِي أَنْ يَرَى زَيْنَكَ زَيْنَهُ وَ شَيْنَكَ شَيْنَهُ وَ الثَّالِثَةُ أَنْ لَا تُغَيِّرَهُ عَلَيْكَ وِلَايَةٌ وَ ل

“There can be no friendship without its rules. You may call one a friend only when he follows such rules and those who do not follow such rules cannot be called a friend. First of all a friend must be the same inside and outside. Secondly, he must consider your beauty his own beauty and your flaw as his flaw. Thirdly t

مَرَّ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيٌّ ع بِقَوْمٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالُوا عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ وَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ وَ مَغْفِرَتُهُ وَ رِضْوَانُهُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع لَا تُجَاوِزُوا بِنَا مِثْلَ مَا قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ لِأَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع إِنَّمَا قَالُوا رَحْمَتُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكاتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ- أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ‌.

“Once Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) passed by a people and offered them the greeting of peace and they answered, ‘(We offer) you peace, May Allah grant you favors, blessings, forgiveness and His pleasure.’ Amir al-Mu’Minin (a.s.) said to them, ‘Do not say to us more than what the angels said to Ibrahim. ثَلَاثَةٌ لَا يَجْهَلُ حَقَّهُمْ إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ مَعْرُوفٌ بِالنِّفَاقِ ذُو الشَّيْبَةِ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَ حَامِلُ الْقُرْآنِ وَ الْإِمَامُ الْعَادِلُ.

“There are three kinds of people whose rights are not ignored, except by a hypocrite, well-known in hypocrisy: of such people is an old person in Islam, the carrier of the Holy Quran and the Imam who possesses the noble merit of justice.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ مِنْ حَقِّ الدَّاخِلِ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ أَنْ يَمْشُوا مَعَهُ هُنَيْئَةً إِذَا دَخَلَ وَ إِذَا خَرَجَ وَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى أَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ‌[2].

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘It is of the rights of a newcomer on the people of the house to gently escort him when entering and leaving.’ The Imam said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘When anyone enters the house of his brother (in belief), the host then is his commander until he leaves.’”

مَرِضَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي فَأَتَيْتُهُ عَائِداً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي إِنَّ لَكَ عِنْدِي نَصِيحَةً أَ تَقْبَلُهَا فَقَالَ نَعَمْ فَقُلْتُ قُلْ- أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ فَشَهِدَ بِذَلِكَ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ هَذَا لَا تَنْتَفِعُ بِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ مِنْكَ عَلَى يَقِينٍ فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ مِنْهُ عَلَى يَقِينٍ فَقُلْتُ قُلْ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَ رَسُ

‘It is only Allah who must be worshipped and He has no partner.’ He then testified to this fact. I then said, ‘This will not be of any benefit unless you are certain about it.’ He said that he is certain about it. I then asked him to say, ‘I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.’ He then testified to this

كُنَّا عِنْدَهُ وَ عِنْدَهُ حُمْرَانُ إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ مَوْلًى لَهُ فَقَالَ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَذَا عِكْرِمَةُ فِي الْمَوْتِ وَ كَانَ يَرَى رَأْيَ الْخَوَارِجِ وَ كَانَ مُنْقَطِعاً[3] إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ لَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنْظِرُونِي‌[4] حَتَّى أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكُمْ فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَنْ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنِّي لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُ عِكْرِمَةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقَعَ النَّفْسُ مَوْقِعَهَا لَعَ

“Humran and we were present before abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a servant came in. He said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, ‘Ikrimah is in dying condition and he believes in the point of view of the al-Khawarij. However, he is (also) inclined to abu Ja‘far (a.s.) .’ The Imam then said to us, ’Wai

مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَحْضُرُهُ الْمَوْتُ إِلَّا وَكَّلَ بِهِ إِبْلِيسُ مِنْ شَيْطَانِهِ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُ بِالْكُفْرِ وَ يُشَكِّكَهُ فِي دِينِهِ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ نَفْسُهُ فَمَنْ كَانَ مُؤْمِناً لَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَيْهِ فَإِذَا حَضَرْتُمْ مَوْتَاكُمْ فَلَقِّنُوهُمْ شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُهُ ص حَتَّى يَمُوتَ. - وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى قَالَ: فَلَقِّنْهُ كَلِمَاتِ الْفَرَجِ وَ الشَّه

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that at the time of everyone’s death, Satan assigns one of his devils to urge the dying person to disbelief and tries to make him doubt his religion until the time his soul departs. مِنْكُمْ وَ اللَّهِ يُقْبَلُ وَ لَكُمْ وَ اللَّهِ يُغْفَرُ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بَيْنَ أَحَدِكُمْ‌[1] وَ بَيْنَ أَنْ يَغْتَبِطَ وَ يَرَى السُّرُورَ وَ قُرَّةَ الْعَيْنِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَبْلُغَ نَفْسُهُ هَاهُنَا وَ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى حَلْقِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ إِذَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ وَ احْتُضِرَ حَضَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص وَ عَلِيٌّ ع وَ جَبْرَئِيلُ وَ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ ع فَيَدْنُو مِنْهُ عَلِيٌّ ع فَيَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللّ

“I heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) say, ‘Only from you, by Allah, it (good deeds) is accepted and only your sins are forgiven. There is nothing between any one of you and bliss, joy and the delight of heart, except the time when the soul reaches here’ - pointing to his throat he continued - ‘and when that time comes the Me

امْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ الْعَارِفِ وَ لَا تَمْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْجَاحِدِ فَإِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ مَلَائِكَةً يُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَ إِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْكَافِرِ مَلَائِكَةً يُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّارِ[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Walk in front of the coffin of a knowledgeable Muslim but do not walk in front of the coffin of a rejecter (of belief). In front of the coffin of a Muslim, angels who hasten to paradise walk, but in front of the coffin of an unbeliever, angels walk who hasten with him (the unbeliever)

إِنْ كَانَ ثَلَاثَةً أَوِ اثْنَيْنِ أَوْ عَشَرَةً أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَلْيُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَاةً وَاحِدَةً يُكَبِّرُ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ كَمَا يُصَلِّي عَلَى مَيِّتٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ قَدْ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِمْ جَمِيعاً يَضَعُ مَيِّتاً وَاحِداً ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُ الْآخَرَ إِلَى أَلْيَةِ الْأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُ رَأْسَ الثَّالِثِ إِلَى أَلْيَةِ الثَّانِي شِبْهَ الْمَدْرَجِ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْهُمْ كُلِّهِمْ مَا

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of one who performs Salah (prayer) for one or two or three dead bodies, how is he to perform them. He (the Imam) said, ‘If there are three or two or ten or less or more, he performs one Salah (prayer) with five Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) just as it is

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرِّجَالِ وَ النِّسَاءِ كَيْفَ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِمْ قَالَ الرِّجَالُ أَمَامَ النِّسَاءِ مِمَّا يَلِي الْإِمَامَ يُصَفُّ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى أَثَرِ بَعْضٍ.

“I once asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about the case of deceased men and women as to how Salah (prayer) is performed for them. He (the Imam) said, ‘Men are placed before women from the side of the Imam in a queue one after the other.’”

يَضَعُ النِّسَاءَ مِمَّا يَلِي الْقِبْلَةَ وَ الصِّبْيَانَ دُونَهُمْ وَ الرِّجَالَ دُونَ ذَلِكَ وَ يَقُومُ الْإِمَامُ مِمَّا يَلِي الرِّجَالَ.

“About the case of the dead bodies of men, children and women, abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Women are placed first from the direction of al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah). Then the children, and then men are placed, and the Imam stands next to the dead bodied of men.’”

إِذَا حَضَرَ الْإِمَامُ الْجِنَازَةَ فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ النَّاسِ بِالصَّلَاةِ عَلَيْهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If the Imam is present, he is the most deserving of all people to perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased person.’”

إِنْ كَانَ مُسْتَضْعَفاً فَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلَّذِينَ تابُوا وَ اتَّبَعُوا سَبِيلَكَ وَ قِهِمْ عَذابَ الْجَحِيمِ‌ وَ إِذَا كُنْتَ لَا تَدْرِي مَا حَالُهُ فَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ يُحِبُّ الْخَيْرَ وَ أَهْلَهُ فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَ ارْحَمْهُ وَ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْهُ وَ إِنْ كَانَ الْمُسْتَضْعَفُ مِنْكَ بِسَبِيلٍ‌[2] فَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ عَلَى وَجْهِ الشَّفَاعَةِ لَا عَلَى وَجْهِ الْوَلَايَةِ[3].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If the deceased is a person of weak understanding, say, “O Lord, forgive those who have repented and followed Your path and protect them against suffering of the hell fire.” If you do not know the condition of the deceased, then say, “O Lord, if this deceased is of those who

التَّرَحُّمُ عَلَى جِهَتَيْنِ جِهَةِ الْوَلَايَةِ وَ جِهَةِ الشَّفَاعَةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Expressing kindness and compassion has two aspects: The aspect of al-Walayah (guardianship) and that of intercession.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَ لَمْ يَقُمْ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَعَدْتُ مَعَهُ وَ لَمْ يَزَلِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ قَائِماً حَتَّى مَضَوْا بِهَا ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا أَقَامَكَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ع يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ اللَّهِ مَا فَعَلَهُ الْحُسَيْنُ ع وَ لَا قَامَ ل

“Once I was with of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), when a man from Ansar was also there. A funeral procession passed by and the Ansariy man stood up; but abu Ja’far (a.s.), did not do so, and I remained sitting with him. The Ansariy remained standing until the procession passed by and then he sat down. The Imam asked, ’What made y

إِذَا وَضَعْتَ الْمَيِّتَ فِي لَحْدِهِ قَرَأْتَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَ اضْرِبْ يَدَكَ عَلَى مَنْكِبِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ ثُمَّ قُلْ يَا فُلَانُ قُلْ‌[4] رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبّاً وَ بِالْإِسْلَامِ دِيناً وَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ ص نَبِيّاً وَ بِعَلِيٍّ ع إِمَاماً وَ سَمِّ إِمَامَ زَمَانِهِ.

7. It is a narration from him (narrator of previous Hadith) by his father from Hammad from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, that when you place a deceased in his grave, read Ayatu al-Kursiy and hold his right shoulder with your hand, then say, ‘O so and so say,

لَمَّا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص جَاءَتِ التَّعْزِيَةُ أَتَاهُمْ آتٍ يَسْمَعُونَ حِسَّهُ‌[3] وَ لَا يَرَوْنَ شَخْصَهُ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ‌ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَ إِنَّما تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيامَةِ فَمَنْ زُحْزِحَ‌[4] عَنِ النَّارِ وَ أُدْخِلَ‌ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فازَ وَ مَا الْحَياةُ الدُّنْيا إِلَّا مَتاعُ الْغُرُورِ فِي اللَّهِ

6. It is narrated from him (narrator of above Hadith) from Salmah from Ali ibn Sayf from his father from abu ‘Usamah Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that when the Messenger of Allah passed away condolences were offered. Someone came to them and they felt his prese

أَتَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَعُودُ ابْناً لَهُ فَوَجَدْتُهُ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَإِذَا هُوَ مُهْتَمٌّ حَزِينٌ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كَيْفَ الصَّبِيُّ فَقَالَ وَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لِمَا بِهِ‌[3] ثُمَّ دَخَلَ فَمَكَثَ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا وَ قَدْ أَسْفَرَ وَجْهُهُ‌[4] وَ ذَهَبَ التَّغَيُّرُ وَ الْحُزْنُ قَالَ فَطَمِعْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ قَدْ صَلَحَ الصَّبِيُّ فَقُلْتُ كَيْفَ الصَّبِيُّ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ

“Once I visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), to also visit his son who was ill. I met him at the door and he was sorrowful and depressed. I asked, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service of your cause, how is your child?’ He replied, ‘By Allah, he is about to die.’ He then went inside the house and after a while came back to us,

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ مَنِ الْمَسْئُولُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ قَالَ مَنْ مَحَضَ الْإِيمَانَ وَ مَنْ مَحَضَ الْكُفْرَ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَبَقِيَّةُ هَذَا الْخَلْقِ قَالَ يُلْهَى وَ اللَّهِ عَنْهُمْ مَا يُعْبَأُ بِهِمْ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ عَمَّ يُسْأَلُونَ قَالَ عَنِ الْحُجَّةِ الْقَائِمَةِ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ فَيُقَالُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي فُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ فَيَقُولُ ذَاكَ إِمَامِي فَيُقَالُ نَمْ

“I asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), ’May Allah grant you well being, who are interrogated in the grave?’ The Imam replied, ‘The only ones interrogated in the grave are those whose belief or disbelief is absolute and total.’ The narrator has said that I then asked, ‘What about the rest of these creatures?’ The Imam replied, ‘Th

إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ شَيَّعَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ إِلَى قَبْرِهِ يَزْدَحِمُونَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى إِذَا انْتَهَى بِهِ إِلَى قَبْرِهِ قَالَتْ لَهُ الْأَرْضُ مَرْحَباً بِكَ وَ أَهْلًا أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ عَلَيَّ مِثْلُكَ لَتَرَيَنَّ مَا أَصْنَعُ بِكَ فَتَوَسَّعُ لَهُ مَدَّ بَصَرِهِ وَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِ فِي قَبْرِهِ مَلَكَا الْقَبْرِ وَ هُمَا قَعِيدَا الْقَبْرِ مُنْك

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when a believing person is taken out of his home, the angels escort him to his grave in a crowded manner until they arrive on his grave. The earth then says to him, ‘You are most welcome. By Allah, I loved that people like you walk on me. You will see what I will do for you.’ His g

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ يُسْأَلُ الْمَيِّتُ فِي قَبْرِهِ عَنْ خَمْسٍ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَ زَكَاتِهِ وَ حَجِّهِ وَ صِيَامِهِ وَ وَلَايَتِهِ إِيَّانَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ فَتَقُولُ الْوَلَايَةُ مِنْ جَانِبِ الْقَبْرِ لِلْأَرْبَعِ مَا دَخَلَ فِيكُنَّ مِنْ نَقْصٍ فَعَلَيَّ تَمَامُهُ.

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَمَّا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ فَقُلْتُ فَهَلْ سَمَّاهُنَّ وَ بَيَّنَهُنَّ فِي كِتَابِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى لِنَبِيِّهِ ص- أَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ‌ إِلى‌ غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ‌[1] وَ دُلُوكُهَا زَوَالُهَا فَفِيمَا بَيْنَ دُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ أَرْبَعُ صَلَوَاتٍ سَمَّاهُنَّ ا

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about how much of Salah (prayer) Allah, the most Majestic and Glorious, has made obligatory. He (the Imam) said, ‘During one day and night five prayers are made obligatory.’ I then asked, ‘Has He named and explained them in His book?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Allah, the most High, has said to

قُلْتُ أُصَلِّي فِي وَقْتِ فَرِيضَةٍ نَافِلَةً قَالَ نَعَمْ فِي أَوَّلِ الْوَقْتِ إِذَا كُنْتَ مَعَ إِمَامٍ تَقْتَدِي بِهِ فَإِذَا كُنْتَ وَحْدَكَ فَابْدَأْ بِالْمَكْتُوبَةِ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), ‘Can I perform optional Salah (prayer) in the time for obligatory one?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, you can do so in the beginning of time if you are with the Imam who leads you in Salah (prayer). If you are alone, then perform the obligatory first.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ نَسِيَ صَلَاةً حَتَّى دَخَلَ وَقْتُ صَلَاةٍ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ إِذَا نَسِيَ الصَّلَاةَ أَوْ نَامَ عَنْهَا صَلَّى حِينَ يَذْكُرُهَا فَإِذَا ذَكَرَهَا وَ هُوَ فِي صَلَاةٍ بَدَأَ بِالَّتِي نَسِيَ وَ إِنْ ذَكَرَهَا مَعَ إِمَامٍ فِي صَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِبِ أَتَمَّهَا بِرَكْعَةٍ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْعَتَمَةَ بَعْدَهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَ صَلَّى الْعَتَمَةَ وَحْدَهُ فَصَلَّ

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who has forgotten a Salah (prayer) until the time for next Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘If one misses a Salah (prayer) because of forgetting or sleep, he must perform it as soon as he remembers. If he remembers it during performing another Salah (prayer), he begi

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَيَمُرُّ بِالْمَسْأَلَةِ أَوْ بِآيَةٍ فِيهَا ذِكْرُ جَنَّةٍ أَوْ نَارٍ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يَسْأَلَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ وَ يَتَعَوَّذَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ مِنَ النَّارِ وَ يَسْأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ.

‘In such case (during prayer) he may ask Allah for protection against fire or for admission in paradise.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ‌[2] عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَنْتَهِي إِلَى الْإِمَامِ حِينَ يُسَلِّمُ قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يُعِيدَ الْأَذَانَ فَلْيَدْخُلْ مَعَهُمْ فِي أَذَانِهِمْ فَإِنْ وَجَدَهُمْ قَدْ تَفَرَّقُوا أَعَادَ الْأَذَانَ.

from who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who joins an Imam when he is saying Salam. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is not required to repeat Adhan. He can join them with their Adhan, however if he finds them leaving, he then repeats Adhan.’”

إِذَا دَخَلَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَ هُوَ لَا يَأْتَمُّ بِصَاحِبِهِ وَ قَدْ بَقِيَ عَلَى الْإِمَامِ آيَةٌ أَوْ آيَتَانِ فَخَشِيَ إِنْ هُوَ أَذَّنَ وَ أَقَامَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ فَلْيَقُلْ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ لْيَدْخُلْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A man may enter a Masjid and is not following his companion in Salah (prayer). He finds the Imam has only one verse to recite or two verses. He is afraid of not being able to join the Imam in Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) if he says Adhan or ‘Iqamah. He can say, ‘Salah (prayer) h

إِذَا كُنْتَ خَلْفَ إِمَامٍ فَقَرَأَ الْحَمْدَ وَ فَرَغَ مِنْ قِرَاءَتِهَا فَقُلْ أَنْتَ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* وَ لَا تَقُلْ آمِينَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If you are behind an Imam when he completes reading al-Hamd you say, ‘all praise belongs to Allah, Cherisher of the worlds,’ and do not say ‘Amen.’” (Ahadith 4-5 are best explained in the form of fatwa.)

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَلَى الْإِمَامِ أَنْ يُسْمِعَ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ وَ إِنْ كَثُرُوا فَقَالَ لِيَقْرَأْ قِرَاءَةً وَسَطاً يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى‌ وَ لا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاتِكَ وَ لا تُخافِتْ بِها.

‘He reads moderately; Allah, most Blessed, most High, has said, “Do not be very loud in your Salah (prayer) nor very quiet.’”” (17:110)

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأَخِيرَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ الْإِمَامُ يَقْرَأُ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ وَ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ يُسَبِّحُ فَإِذَا كُنْتَ وَحْدَكَ فَاقْرَأْ فِيهِمَا وَ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَسَبِّحْ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about reading in the case of one who performs behind an Imam in last two Rak‘at. He (the Imam) said, ‘He reads al-Fatihah al-Kitab and everyone behind him reads Tasbih. When performing Salah (prayer) alone, read (al-Fatihah) in the two last Rak‘at or say Tasbih if you like.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقُلْتُ مَا يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ إِذَا قَالَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ قَالَ يَقُولُ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ‌* وَ يَخْفِضُ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about what one says when performing behind an Imam when he says, ‘Allah hears all those who praise him.’ He (the Imam) said that he must say, ‘All praise belong to Allah, Cherisher of the worlds’ and lowers his voice.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْمَاضِيَ ع عَمَّا أَقُولُ فِي سَجْدَةِ الشُّكْرِ فَقَدِ اخْتَلَفَ أَصْحَابُنَا فِيهِ فَقَالَ قُلْ وَ أَنْتَ سَاجِدٌ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ وَ أُشْهِدُ مَلَائِكَتَكَ وَ أَنْبِيَاءَكَ وَ رُسُلَكَ وَ جَمِيعَ خَلْقِكَ أَنَّكَ اللَّهُ رَبِّي وَ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينِي وَ مُحَمَّداً نَبِيِّي وَ عَلِيّاً وَ فُلَاناً وَ فُلَاناً إِلَى آخِرِهِمْ أَئِمَّتِي بِهِمْ أَتَوَلَّى وَ مِنْ عَدُوِّهِمْ أَ

“I asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about what to say in prostration for thanksgiving because our people are not of the same idea about it. He told me to say the following in a prostrating position: ‘O Lord, I beg You to bear witness, I beg Your angels, Your prophets, messengers and all of Your creatures to bear witness (to

قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي إِمَامُ مَسْجِدِ الْحَيِّ فَأَرْكَعُ بِهِمْ فَأَسْمَعُ خَفَقَانَ نِعَالِهِمْ وَ أَنَا رَاكِعٌ فَقَالَ اصْبِرْ رُكُوعَكَ‌[2] وَ مِثْلَ رُكُوعِكَ فَإِنِ انْقَطَعَ وَ إِلَّا فَانْتَصِبْ قَائِماً.

“I once said to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), ‘I am an Imam of the village. During Salah (prayer) I hear the sound of their shoes walking when I am in Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Wait in your Ruku‘ for the length of your Ruku‘ until the sound stops, otherwise, you can rise to stand up straight.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَقُومُ فِي الصَّفِّ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ أَحَدٌ كَيْفَ يُسَلِّمُ قَالَ يُسَلِّمُ وَاحِدَةً عَنْ يَمِينِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) behind an Imam and there is no one on his left side; how he says the phrase of offering greeting of peace?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He says the phrase of offering greeting of peace only once to his right side.’”

أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ أَمَّ قَوْماً فَعَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَقْعُدَ بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ وَ لَا يَخْرُجَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْمَوْضِعِ حَتَّى يُتِمَّ الَّذِينَ خَلْفَهُ الَّذِينَ سُبِقُوا صَلَاتَهُمْ ذَلِكَ عَلَى كُلِّ إِمَامٍ وَاجِبٌ إِذَا عَلِمَ أَنَّ فِيهِمْ مَسْبُوقاً وَ إِنْ عَلِمَ أَنْ لَيْسَ فِيهِمْ مَسْبُوقٌ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَلْيَذْهَبْ حَيْثُ شَاءَ.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا فَرَغْتَ مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ فَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَدِينُكَ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَ وَلَايَتِكَ وَ وَلَايَةِ رَسُولِكَ وَ وَلَايَةِ الْأَئِمَّةِ ع مِنْ أَوَّلِهِمْ إِلَى آخِرِهِمْ وَ تُسَمِّيهِمْ ثُمَّ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَدِينُكَ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَ وَلَايَتِهِمْ وَ الرِّضَا بِمَا فَضَّلْتَهُمْ بِهِ غَيْرَ مُتَكَبِّرٍ وَ لَا مُسْتَكْبِرٍ عَلَى مَعْنَى مَا أَنْزَلْتَ فِي كِتَابِكَ

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْإِمَامِ يُصَلِّي بِأَرْبَعَةِ أَنْفُسٍ أَوْ خَمْسَةِ أَنْفُسٍ وَ يُسَبِّحُ اثْنَانِ‌[1] عَلَى أَنَّهُمْ صَلَّوْا ثَلَاثاً وَ يُسَبِّحُ ثَلَاثَةٌ عَلَى أَنَّهُمْ صَلَّوْا أَرْبَعاً وَ يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ قُومُوا وَ يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ اقْعُدُوا وَ الْإِمَامُ مَائِلٌ مَعَ أَحَدِهِمَا أَوْ مُعْتَدِلُ الْوَهْمِ فَمَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْإِمَامِ سَهْوٌ إِذَا حَفِظَ عَلَيْهِ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ س

كُنْتُ جَالِساً عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ جَارُ مَسْجِدٍ لِقَوْمِي فَإِذَا أَنَا لَمْ أُصَلِّ مَعَهُمْ وَقَعُوا فِيَّ وَ قَالُوا هُوَ هَكَذَا وَ هَكَذَا فَقَالَ أَمَا لَئِنْ قُلْتَ ذَاكَ لَقَدْ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص مَنْ سَمِعَ النِّدَاءَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ فَلَا صَلَاةَ لَهُ فَخَرَجَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَا

“I once was sitting in the presence of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), when a man came to him and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I am a man in the neighborhood of the Masjid of my people. If I do not perform Salah (prayer) with them, they turn against me and say that I am so and so. He (the Imam)

قَالَ: لِيَكُنِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ الْإِمَامَ‌[3] أُولِي الْأَحْلَامِ مِنْكُمْ وَ النُّهَى فَإِنْ نَسِيَ الْإِمَامُ أَوْ تَعَايَا قَوَّمُوهُ‌[4] وَ أَفْضَلُ الصُّفُوفِ أَوَّلُهَا وَ أَفْضَلُ أَوَّلِهَا مَا دَنَا مِنَ الْإِمَامِ وَ فَضْلُ صَلَاةِ الْجَمَاعَةِ عَلَى صَلَاةِ الرَّجُلِ فَذّاً خَمْسٌ وَ عِشْرُونَ دَرَجَةً فِي الْجَنَّةِ.
