“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying that once a man came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have formed al-Zihar with my wife’. “Once abu Ja‘far (a.s.), made me read something from the books of ‘Ali (a.s.). Therein I found this: I prohibit you from using eel for food, al-Zimir, (a certain kind of fish), Mar mahi (something like fish), snake fish, dead fish floating on water and the spleen.’ I then asked, ‘O child of the Messenger of Allah, may

‘Do not use for food and do not sell of fish whatever has no scales.’”

“As we were sitting with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), a man passed by with a slaughtered khuttaf in his hand. ‘You can use weapons for Nahr and mention the name of Allah; then you can use it for food.’”

‘Of the beasts that which have canine teeth and of birds that which have claws are not lawful for food.’ He (the Imam) has said, ‘Do not use any of the beasts for food.’”

The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited using for food of every bird that has claws and beast that has canine teeth.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Sama‘ah, all beasts are inedible; even if it is a beast that does not have canine teeth.

كُنْتُ جَالِساً فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ ص إِذَا أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَنْتَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ قُلْتُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ[1] فَقُلْتُ مَا حَاجَتُكَ فَقَالَ لِي أَ تَعْرِفُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ ع فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَمَا حَاجَتُكَ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ هَيَّأْتُ لَهُ أَرْبَعِينَ مَسْأَلَةً أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْهَا فَمَا كَانَ مِنْ حَقٍّ أَخَذْتُهُ وَ مَا كَانَ مِنْ بَاطِلٍ تَرَكْتُهُ قَالَ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment, must not eat at a table where wine exists.’”

“Once Bashir al-Dahhan asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when I was present, saying, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah eat while leaning against something to his right or left?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah never ate while leaning against something on his right or left, he (the Messenger of Allah) however, sat like

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَا أَكَلَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ ص وَ هُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ مُنْذُ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَشَبَّهَ بِالْمُلُوكِ وَ نَحْنُ لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَفْعَلَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Holy Prophet never ate while leaning against something, from the time Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent him as His Messenger. He (the Messenger of Allah) disliked sitting as kings, but we are not able to do so.’”
