Prophethood

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا شَرِبَ الْمَاءَ قَالَ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي سَقَانَا عَذْباً زُلَالًا وَ لَمْ يَسْقِنَا مِلْحاً أُجَاجاً وَ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا.

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking water would say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has given us cool and clear water and not of salty and foul smelling kind, and has not yet questioned us because of our sins.’”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَشْرَبُ فِي الْأَقْدَاحِ الشَّامِيَّةِ يُجَاءُ بِهَا مِنَ الشَّامِ وَ تُهْدَى إِلَيْهِ ص.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would drink water in bowls from Syria that were brought from there and given as gifts to him (the Messenger of Allah). 5 ”

مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ ص بِقَوْمٍ يَشْرَبُونَ الْمَاءَ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ص اشْرَبُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا خَيْرُ أَوَانِيكُمْ.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once passed by a pe

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ص يُعْجِبُهُ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ فِي الْإِنَاءِ الشَّامِيِّ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ هُوَ أَنْظَفُ آنِيَتِكُمْ.

"The Messenger of Allah (sw) liked to drink with Syrian bowls and said, ‘It is the cleanest of your utensils.’"

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وَ ذَكَرَ مِصْرَ فَقَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص لَا تَأْكُلُوا فِي فَخَّارِهَا وَ لَا تَغْسِلُوا رُءُوسَكُمْ بِطِينِهَا فَإِنَّهُ يَذْهَبُ بِالْغَيْرَةِ وَ يُورِثُ الدِّيَاثَةَ.

‘When a city (Egypt) was mentioned, the Holy Prophet, said, ‘You must not eat in its pottery bowls; do not wash your head with its clay because it takes away one’s courage (protective feeling) and causes one to become a pimp.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ دَوَاءٌ مِمَّا شُرِبَ لَهُ.

“The water of Zamzam is a cure for whatever reason it is drunk

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ‌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى- وَ نَزَّلْنا مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً مُبارَكاً[1] قَالَ لَيْسَ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ خَالَطَهُ مَاءُ السَّمَاءِ.

“I once heard abu Ja‘far (a.s.), saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, about the meaning of the words of Allah, most High, ‘. . .We sent blessed water from the sky.’ (50:9) has said, there is no water on earth with which water

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَنِ الِاسْتِشْفَاءِ بِالْحُمَّيَاتِ وَ هِيَ الْعُيُونُ الْحَارَّةُ الَّتِي تَكُونُ فِي الْجِبَالِ الَّتِي تُوجَدُ فِيهَا رَائِحَةُ الْكِبْرِيتِ وَ قِيلَ إِنَّهَا مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited seeking cures from the hot fountains which are in mountains in which the smell of sulfur is found.’ It is said that it is of the smell of hell.”

مَرَرْتُ بِالْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ص وَ هُمَا فِي الْفُرَاتِ مُسْتَنْقِعَانِ فِي إِزَارَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُمَا يَا ابْنَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمَا أَفْسَدْتُمَا الْإِزَارَيْنِ فَقَالا لِي يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ فَسَادُنَا لِلْإِزَارَيْنِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ فَسَادِ الدِّينِ إِنَّ لِلْمَاءِ أَهْلًا وَ سُكَّاناً كَسُكَّانِ الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ قَالا إِلَى أَيْنَ تُرِيدُ فَقُلْتُ إِلَى هَذَا الْمَاءِ فَقَالا

“I once passed by al-Hassan and al-Husayn, Alayhim al-Salam, who were in soaked wraparound cloths. I then said to them, ‘Grandchildren of the Messenger of Allah, you have ruined your wraparound cloths.’ They said to me, ‘O abu Sa‘id, ruining our wraparound cloths is more preferable to us than ruining the religion. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْخَمْرُ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ الْعَصِيرُ مِنَ الْكَرْمِ وَ النَّقِيعُ مِنَ الزَّبِيبِ وَ الْبِتْعُ مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَ الْمِزْرُ مِنَ الشَّعِيرِ[2] وَ النَّبِيذُ مِنَ التَّمْرِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Intoxicating liquors are made from five kinds of substances: grape juice, extracts of raisins, al-Bit’ (mead) from honey, al-Mizru (beer) from barley an

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْخَمْرُ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ الْعَصِيرُ مِنَ الْكَرْمِ وَ النَّقِيعُ مِنَ الزَّبِيبِ وَ الْبِتْعُ مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَ الْمِزْرُ مِنَ الشَّعِيرِ وَ النَّبِيذُ مِنَ التَّمْرِ.

لَمَّا هَبَطَ نُوحٌ ع مِنَ السَّفِينَةِ غَرَسَ غَرْساً وَ كَانَ فِيمَا غَرَسَ ع الْحَبَلَةُ[1] ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ إِبْلِيسُ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ فَقَلَعَهَا ثُمَّ إِنَّ نُوحاً ع عَادَ إِلَى غَرْسِهِ فَوَجَدَهُ عَلَى حَالِهِ وَ وَجَدَ الْحَبَلَةَ قَدْ قُلِعَتْ وَ وَجَدَ إِبْلِيسَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ عِنْدَهَا فَأَتَاهُ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ إِبْلِيسَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ قَلَعَهَا فَقَالَ نُوحٌ لِإِبْ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘When Noah (a.s.), disembarked from the ark, he established a plantation and of the things that he planted was a vine of grapes. He went back to his family and Iblis, may he be condemned, uprooted it. Noah (a.s.), went to his plantation. He found everything in its condition except the grap

مَا بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ نَبِيّاً قَطُّ إِلَّا وَ فِي عِلْمِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنَّهُ إِذَا أَكْمَلَ لَهُ دِينَهُ كَانَ فِيهِ تَحْرِيمُ الْخَمْرِ وَ لَمْ تَزَلِ الْخَمْرُ حَرَاماً إِنَّ الدِّينَ أَنَّمَا يُحَوَّلُ مِنْ خَصْلَةٍ إِلَى أُخْرَى فَلَوْ كَانَ ذَلِكَ جُمْلَةً قُطِعَ بِهِمْ دُونَ الدِّينِ.

’Every time Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent a Prophet it was in the knowledge of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, that in the case of completing His religion wine must have been made unlawful. سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بَعَثَنِي‌ رَحْمَةً لِلْعالَمِينَ‌ وَ لِأَمْحَقَ الْمَعَازِفَ وَ الْمَزَامِيرَ وَ أُمُورَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَ الْأَوْثَانَ وَ قَالَ أَقْسَمَ رَبِّي أَنْ لَا يَشْرَبَ عَبْدٌ لِي فِي الدُّنْيَا خَمْراً إِلَّا سَقَيْتُهُ مِثْلَ مَا شَرِبَ مِنْهَا مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ- يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مُعَذَّباً أَوْ مَغْفُوراً لَهُ وَ

Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent me as mercy for the worlds. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ بَعْدَ مَا حَرَّمَهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَى لِسَانِي فَلَيْسَ بِأَهْلٍ أَنْ يُزَوَّجَ إِذَا خَطَبَ وَ لَا يُشَفَّعَ إِذَا شَفَعَ وَ لَا يُصَدَّقَ إِذَا حَدَّثَ وَ لَا يُؤْتَمَنَ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ فَمَنِ ائْتَمَنَهُ بَعْدَ عِلْمِهِ فِيهِ فَلَيْسَ لِلَّذِي ائْتَمَنَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ضَمَانٌ وَ لَا لَهُ أَجْرٌ وَ لَا خَلَفٌ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one drinks wine after Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made it unlawful through my tongue, he does not deserve to receive acceptance to his marriage proposal. His intercession is

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ شَارِبُ الْخَمْرِ لَا يُعَادُ إِذَا مَرِضَ وَ لَا يُشْهَدُ لَهُ جَنَازَةٌ وَ لَا تُزَكُّوهُ إِذَا شَهِدَ وَ لَا تُزَوِّجُوهُ إِذَا خَطَبَ وَ لَا تَأْتَمِنُوهُ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The wine drinker must not be visited when he is sick. His funeral must not be attended, he must not be relied on when he testifies and must not be marri

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ شَارِبُ الْخَمْرِ إِنْ مَرِضَ فَلَا تَعُودُوهُ وَ إِنْ مَاتَ فَلَا تَحْضُرُوهُ وَ إِنْ شَهِدَ فَلَا تُزَكُّوهُ وَ إِنْ خَطَبَ فَلَا تُزَوِّجُوهُ وَ إِنْ سَأَلَكُمْ أَمَانَةً فَلَا تَأْتَمِنُوهُ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If a wine drinker becomes ill do not visit him. If he dies do not attend his funeral, if he testifies do not rely his testimony, if he proposes marriage do not marry him and if he asks to t

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ بَعْدَ أَنْ حَرَّمَهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى لِسَانِي فَلَيْسَ بِأَهْلٍ أَنْ يُزَوَّجَ إِذَا خَطَبَ وَ لَا يُصَدَّقَ إِذَا حَدَّثَ وَ لَا يُشَفَّعَ إِذَا شَفَعَ وَ لَا يُؤْتَمَنَ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ فَمَنِ ائْتَمَنَهُ عَلَى أَمَانَةٍ فَأَكَلَهَا أَوْ ضَيَّعَهَا فَلَيْسَ لِلَّذِي ائْتَمَنَهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ يَأْجُرَهُ وَ لَا يُخْلِفَ عَلَيْهِ- وَ قَالَ أَبُ

‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one drinks wine after Allah, most High, has made it unlawful through my tongue, he then does not deserve to be married if he proposes marriage. He is not considered truthful if he speaks

لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْخَمْرَ وَ عَاصِرَهَا وَ مُعْتَصِرَهَا وَ بَائِعَهَا وَ مُشْتَرِيَهَا وَ سَاقِيَهَا وَ آكِلَ ثَمَنِهَا وَ شَارِبَهَا وَ حَامِلَهَا وَ الْمَحْمُولَةَ إِلَيْهِ.

“The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has condemned wine. He has condemned those who squeeze the juice for it, those who want it be squeezed, those who sell it, those who buy it, those who serve it, those who receive payment for it, those

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَا أُصَلِّي عَلَى غَرِيقِ خَمْرٍ[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I do not perform Salat (prayer) on the dead body of one drowned in wine (a wine drinker).”’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ لَا يَنَالُ شَفَاعَتِي مَنِ اسْتَخَفَّ بِصَلَاتِهِ وَ لَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يَنَالُ شَفَاعَتِي مَنْ شَرِبَ الْمُسْكِرَ وَ لَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘My intercession will not apply to those who take their Salat (prayer) lightly and he will not be able to reach before me on the pond. No, by Allah my in

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ مِنْكُمْ مُسْكِراً لَمْ تُقْبَلْ مِنْهُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one [of you] drinks intoxicating liquor his Salat (prayer) is not accepted for forty days.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ شَرِبَ خَمْراً حَتَّى يَسْكَرَ لَمْ يَقْبَلِ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْهُ صَلَاتَهُ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحاً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If one drinks wine till he becomes drunk Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, will not accept his Salat (prayer) for forty days.”’

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع إِنَّا رُوِّينَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ص أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ لَمْ تُحْتَسَبْ لَهُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً قَالَ فَقَالَ صَدَقُوا قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ لَا تُحْتَسَبُ صَلَاتُهُ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحاً لَا أَقَلَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَ لَا أَكْثَرَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَدَّرَ خَلْقَ الْإِنْسَانِ فَصَيَّرَهُ نُطْفَةً أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً ثُمَّ نَقَلَهَا فَصَيَّرَهَا عَلَقَةً أ

“If one drinks wine his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken the truth.’ I then asked, ‘How is it that his Salat (prayer) is not counted for forty days: no less and no more?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, determined the creation of human being

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ الْخَمْرَ رَأْسُ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ.

‘Wine is the head of all sins.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ يَلْقَى اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A wine addict will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, as a worshipper of idols will do.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ يَلْقَى اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَوْمَ يَلْقَاهُ كَافِراً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A wine addict will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, as a worshipper of idols will do.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ إِذَا مَاتَ وَ هُوَ مُدْمِنٌ عَلَيْهِ يَلْقَى اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حِينَ يَلْقَاهُ- كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ’A wine addict is like an idol worshipper. When he dies as a wine addict and he will meet Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, he will meet Him as a wors

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِيهِ ع أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ: مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ وَ مَا الْمُدْمِنُ قَالَ الَّذِي إِذَا وَجَدَهَا شَرِبَهَا.

‘A wine addict is like an idol worshipper.’ I (the narrator) then asked, ‘What is a ‘Mudmin’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He is one who drinks whenever he finds.’”

سَأَلَ الْمَهْدِيُّ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الْخَمْرِ هَلْ هِيَ مُحَرَّمَةٌ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَإِنَّ النَّاسَ إِنَّمَا يَعْرِفُونَ النَّهْيَ عَنْهَا وَ لَا يَعْرِفُونَ التَّحْرِيمَ لَهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع بَلْ هِيَ مُحَرَّمَةٌ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُ فِي أَيِّ مَوْضِعٍ هِيَ مُحَرَّمَةٌ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ جَلَّ اسْمُهُ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَن

“Al-Mahdiy once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about wine; if it is made unlawful in the book of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, because people know it is prohibited and they do not know if it is unlawful. Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), said to him, ‘Yes, it is unlawful in the book of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, O ’A

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ خَطَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ.

Every intoxicating liquor is unlawful for consumption.’””

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَرَّمَ الْخَمْرَ بِعَيْنِهَا[1] فَقَلِيلُهَا وَ كَثِيرُهَا حَرَامٌ كَمَا حَرَّمَ الْمَيْتَةَ وَ الدَّمَ وَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الشَّرَابَ مِنْ كُلِّ مُسْكِرٍ وَ مَا حَرَّمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص فَقَدْ حَرَّمَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has made the very substance of wine unlawful, in a small or large quantity. It is unlawful just as dead animals, blood and pork are unlawful. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ خَمْرٌ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘All intoxicating liquor is unlawful and every intoxicating liquor is wine.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي عَمِّي وَ هُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ صُلَحَاءِ مَوَالِيكَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَأَصِفَهُ لَكَ فَقَالَ ع لَهُ أَنَا أَصِفُهُ لَكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ فَمَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَقَلِيلُ الْحَرَامِ يُحِلُّهُ كَثِيرُ الْمَاءِ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ بِكَفِّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ لَا لَا.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that a man of the virtuous ones among your followers has asked me to ask you about al-Nabidh (wine) so I can describe it for him from you. He (the Imam) said, ‘I describe it for you as the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Every intoxicating liquor is unlawful and whatever in a large

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ الْخَمْرَ بِعَيْنِهَا وَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مِنَ الْأَشْرِبَةِ كُلَّ مُسْكِرٍ.

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about al-Nabidh. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص خَطَبَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَلَا إِنَّ كُلَّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ أَلَا وَ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ.

“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about al-Nabidh. He (the Imam) said that once the Messenger of Allah addressed the people and said, £ 0 people, all intoxicating liquor is unlawful. You must take notice that whatever in large quantity is intoxicating liquor, it in a small quantity also is unlawful.’”

كُنْتُ مُبْتَلًى بِالنَّبِيذِ مُعْجَباً بِهِ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَصِفُ لَكَ النَّبِيذَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي بَلْ أَنَا أَصِفُهُ لَكَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَذَا نَبِيذُ السِّقَايَةِ بِفِنَاءِ الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ لِي لَيْسَ هَكَذَا كَانَتِ السِّقَايَةُ إِنَّمَا السِّقَايَةُ زَمْزَمُ أَ فَتَدْرِي مَنْ أَوَّ

“I liked al-Nabidh a great deal and I said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I want to describe al-Nabidh before you.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, allow me to describe it for you. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of th

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ التَّمْرِ وَ الزَّبِيبِ يُطْبَخَانِ لِلنَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ لَا وَ قَالَ كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ وَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ وَ قَالَ لَا يَصْلُحُ فِي النَّبِيذِ الْخَمِيرَةُ وَ هِيَ الْعَكَرَةُ[1].

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), if dates and raisins can be cooked for al-Nabidh. He (the Imam) said, ‘No.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘All intoxicating liquor is unlawful and the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Whatever in larg

ابْتَدَأَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَوْماً مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ كُلُّهُ حَرَامٌ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ الْجُرْعَةُ مِنْهُ حَرَامٌ.

all intoxicating liquor is unlawful.’ I then asked saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, is all of it unlawful?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, even one sip is unlawful.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ الْخَمْرَةَ قَلِيلَهَا وَ كَثِيرَهَا كَمَا حَرَّمَ الْمَيْتَةَ وَ الدَّمَ وَ لَحْمَ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ حَرَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ص مِنَ الْأَشْرِبَةِ الْمُسْكِرَ وَ مَا حَرَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ص فَقَدْ حَرَّمَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ قَالَ مَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ.

اسْتَأْذَنْتُ لِبَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ حَلَالٌ فَقَالَ أَصْلَحَكَ‌ اللَّهُ إِنَّمَا سَأَلْتُكَ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ الَّذِي يُجْعَلُ فِيهِ الْعَكَرُ فَيَغْلِي حَتَّى يُسْكِرَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ فَإِنَّ مَنْ عِنْدَنَا بِالْعِرَاقِ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص إِن

“I once asked for permission from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), for a certain person of our people and he asked him (the Imam) about al-Nabidh. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is lawful.’ He said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I asked about al-Nabidh which is placed in al-‘Akr (murky) to boil until it becomes intoxicating.’ Abu

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا تَقُولُ فِي النَّبِيذِ فَإِنَّ أَبَا مَرْيَمَ يَشْرَبُهُ وَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ أَمَرْتَ بِشُرْبِهِ فَقَالَ مَعَاذَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ أَنْ أَكُونَ آمُرُ بِشُرْبِ مُسْكِرٍ وَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لَشَيْ‌ءٌ مَا اتَّقَيْتُ فِيهِ سُلْطَاناً وَ لَا غَيْرَهُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَرَامٌ فَمَا أَسْكَرَ كَثِيرُهُ فَقَلِيلُهُ حَرَامٌ.

‘All intoxicating liquor is unlawful. What is intoxicating in large quantity, it is unlawful in small quantity also.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ رُبَّمَا حَضَرْتُ مَعَهُمُ الْعَشَاءَ فَيَجِيئُونَ بِالنَّبِيذِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَإِنْ أَنَا لَمْ أَشْرَبْهُ خِفْتُ أَنْ يَقُولُوا فُلَانِيٌ‌[1] فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فَقَالَ اكْسِرْهُ بِالْمَاءِ قُلْتُ فَإِذَا أَنَا كَسَرْتُهُ بِالْمَاءِ أَشْرَبُهُ قَالَ لَا[2].

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may go with these people for dinner and they bring al-Nabidh thereafter. If I do not drink I fear they may say, ‘He is of so and so (Ja‘fariy). What must I do in such case?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can break it with water.’ I then asked, ‘When I break it with water can I then

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْقَدَحُ مِنَ النَّبِيذِ وَ الْقَدَحُ مِنَ الْخَمْرِ سَوَاءٌ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ سَوَاءٌ قُلْتُ فَالْحَدُّ فِيهِمَا سَوَاءٌ فَقَالَ سَوَاءٌ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if a cup of wine and a cup of al-Nabidh are equal. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, they are equal.’ I then asked if the penalty is also the same. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is equal.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا تَرَى فِي قَدَحٍ مِنْ مُسْكِرٍ يُصَبُّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ عَادِيَتُهُ‌[3] وَ يَذْهَبَ سُكْرُهُ فَقَالَ لَا وَ اللَّهِ وَ لَا قَطْرَةٌ تَقْطُرُ مِنْهُ فِي حُبٍّ إِلَّا أُهَرِيقَ ذَلِكَ الْحُبُّ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a cup of intoxicating liquor on which water is poured until its bad effect is gone and also its intoxicating effect. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, by Allah, even if one drop of it is dropped in a hub (a large water container) the whole hub must be thrown out.’”

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ أَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ وَ زِيَادُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَارِثِيُّ عَلَيْهَا فَاسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَ تَمَكَّنْتُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِي قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي الْحَارِثِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ وَ قَدْ هَدَانِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَى مَحَبَّتِكُمْ وَ مَوَدَّتِكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي أَبُ

“I once went to al-Madinah when Ziyad ibn ‘Ubayd Allah al-Harithiy was the governor. I asked permission to visit abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.). I then visited and offered him (the Imam) the greeting of peace and took my place. I then said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I am from banu al-Harith ibn Ka‘b and Allah, most Majestic, m

كَانَ أَبُو بَصِيرٍ وَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَشْرَبُونَ النَّبِيذَ يَكْسِرُونَهُ بِالْمَاءِ فَحَدَّثْتُ بِذَلِكَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لِي وَ كَيْفَ صَارَ الْمَاءُ يُحَلِّلُ الْمُسْكِرَ مُرْهُمْ لَا يَشْرَبُوا مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا وَ لَا كَثِيراً قُلْتُ إِنَّهُمْ يَذْكُرُونَ أَنَّ الرِّضَا مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ يُحِلُّهُ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ وَ كَيْفَ كَانَ يُحِلُّونَ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ ع الْمُسْكِرَ- وَ هُمْ لَا يَشْرَبُونَ مِنْهُ قَل

فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا لَكَ وَ لِمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ رَسُولُهُ ص يَقُولُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثاً عَلَيْكَ بِهَذَا الْمَرِيسِ الَّذِي تَمْرُسُهُ‌[1] بِالْعَشِيِّ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَمْرُسُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْعَشِيِّ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَذَا يَنْفُخُ الْبَطْنَ قَالَ لَهُ فَأَدُلُّكَ عَلَى مَا هُوَ أَنْفَعُ لَكَ مِنْ هَذَا عَلَيْكَ بِالدُّعَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ قَالَ فَقُل
