لَا تُعَادُ الصَّلَاةُ مِنْ دَمٍ لَمْ تُبْصِرْهُ غَيْرَ دَمِ الْحَيْضِ[1] فَإِنَّ قَلِيلَهُ وَ كَثِيرَهُ فِي الثَّوْبِ إِنْ رَآهُ أَوْ لَمْ يَرَهُ سَوَاءٌ.
“Abu Ja‘far, or abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘You are not required to perform your Salah (prayer) again, because of blood that you did not see except that which is from Hayd (menses), a small amount or otherwise, you see it or not are all the same.’”
إِذَا أَصَابَ ثَوْبَكَ خَمْرٌ أَوْ نَبِيذٌ مُسْكِرٌ فَاغْسِلْهُ إِنْ عَرَفْتَ مَوْضِعَهُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ مَوْضِعَهُ فَاغْسِلْهُ كُلَّهُ وَ إِنْ صَلَّيْتَ فِيهِ فَأَعِدْ صَلَاتَكَ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If your clothes come in contact with wine or intoxicating al-Nabidh (a kind of wine), you must wash it, if you know the area but if you do not know the area then wash all of that cloth and if you have performed Salah (prayer) with it perform it again.’”
كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ ص أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الثَّوْبِ يُصِيبُهُ الْخَمْرُ وَ لَحْمُ الْخِنْزِيرِ أَ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ أَمْ لَا فَإِنَّ أَصْحَابَنَا قَدِ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ صَلِّ فِيهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ شُرْبَهَا وَ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهِ[3] فَكَتَبَ ع لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهِ فَإِنَّهُ رِجْسٌ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الَّذِي يُعِيرُ ثَوْبَهُ لِمَنْ يَعْلَمُ أَنّ
“I once wrote to the man (a.s.), asking him about clothes which come in contact with wine and flesh of pig, if I can perform Salah (prayer) wearing such cloth or not. Our people have differences on the issue. Certain ones say, ‘You can perform Salah (prayer) with it because only drinking is unlawful.’ Certain others sa
عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَبْتَدِئَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ صَلَّى وَ فِي ثَوْبِهِ جَنَابَةٌ أَوْ دَمٌ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ ثُمَّ عَلِمَ قَالَ قَدْ مَضَتْ صَلَاتُهُ وَ لَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْهِ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs two Rak‘at Salah (prayer) wearing clothes in which one has experienced sexual relation, then he comes to know it. قُلْتُ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَصَابَتْهُ جَنَابَةٌ بِاللَّيْلِ فَاغْتَسَلَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ نَظَرَ فَإِذَا فِي ثَوْبِهِ جَنَابَةٌ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَدَعْ شَيْئاً إِلَّا وَ لَهُ حَدٌّ إِنْ كَانَ حِينَ قَامَ نَظَرَ فَلَمْ يَرَ شَيْئاً فَلَا إِعَادَةَ عَلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ حِينَ قَامَ لَمْ يَنْظُرْ فَعَلَيْهِ الْإِعَادَةُ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who experiences sexual relation during the night and takes Ghusl (bath). In the morning finds semen in his clothes. سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَرَى فِي ثَوْبِ أَخِيهِ دَماً وَ هُوَ يُصَلِّي قَالَ لَا يُؤْذِنُهُ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ.
I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who finds blood in clothes of his brother while he is performing Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘He is not required to inform him until he completes his Salah (prayer) again.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَصَابَ ثَوْبَهُ جَنَابَةٌ أَوْ دَمٌ قَالَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلِمَ أَنَّهُ أَصَابَ ثَوْبَهُ جَنَابَةٌ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى فِيهِ وَ لَمْ يَغْسِلْهُ فَعَلَيْهِ أَنْ يُعِيدَ مَا صَلَّى وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِهِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِعَادَةٌ وَ إِنْ كَانَ يَرَى أَنَّهُ أَصَابَهُ شَيْءٌ فَنَظَرَ فَلَمْ يَرَ شَيْئاً أَجْزَأَهُ أَنْ يَنْضِحَهُ بِالْمَاءِ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who finds semen or blood in his clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he learns before performing Salah (prayer) that there is semen in his clothes, then performs Salah (prayer) in it without washing; he is required to perform his Salah (prayer) again, but if he did not know,
بَعَثْتُ بِمَسْأَلَةٍ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَعَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ قُلْتُ سَلْهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَبُولُ فَيُصِيبُ فَخِذَهُ قَدْرُ نُكْتَةٍ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ فَيُصَلِّي وَ يَذْكُرُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَغْسِلْهَا قَالَ يَغْسِلُهَا وَ يُعِيدُ صَلَاتَهُ.
“I once sent a question to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), through Ibrahim ibn Maymun and told him to ask him (the Imam) about the case of a drop of urine found on one’s thigh but one performs Salah (prayer) and then remembers that he has not washed it. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is required to perform his Salah (prayer) again.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ فِي ثَوْبِهِ عَذِرَةٌ مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ أَوْ سِنَّوْرٍ أَوْ كَلْبٍ أَ يُعِيدُ صَلَاتَهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ فَلَا يُعِيدُ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with clothes in which there is feces of human beings or cat or dog, if he is required to perform his Salah (prayer) again. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he did not know he is not required to perform his Salah (prayer) again.’”
اغْسِلْ ثَوْبَكَ مِنْ بَوْلِ كُلِّ مَا لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهُ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Wash your clothes clean because of urine of all inedible animals.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَتَقَيَّأُ فِي ثَوْبِهِ يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ وَ لَا يَغْسِلَهُ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ.
“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who vomits in his clothes, if he can perform Salah (prayer) in them without washing. He (the Imam) said, ’It is not an offense to do so.’”
قَرَأْتُ فِي كِتَابِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ رَوَى زُرَارَةُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ص فِي الْخَمْرِ يُصِيبُ ثَوْبَ الرَّجُلِ أَنَّهُمَا قَالا لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ شُرْبُهَا وَ رَوَى غَيْرُ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِذَا أَصَابَ ثَوْبَكَ خَمْرٌ أَوْ نَبِيذٌ يَعْنِي الْمُسْكِرَ فَاغْسِلْهُ إِنْ عَ
“I read in the letter of ’Abd Allah ibn Muhammad to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), in which he has said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. Zurarah has narrated for abu Ja’far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about wine which pollutes one’s clothes that the two Imam had said, “It is not an offens
كُنْتُ مَعَ يُونُسَ بِبَغْدَادَ وَ أَنَا أَمْشِي مَعَهُ فِي السُّوقِ فَفَتَحَ صَاحِبُ الْفُقَّاعِ فُقَّاعَهُ فَقَفَزَ[1] فَأَصَابَ ثَوْبَ يُونُسَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ قَدِ اغْتَمَّ بِذَلِكَ حَتَّى زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَ لَا تُصَلِّي قَالَ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ حَتَّى أَرْجِعَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ وَ أَغْسِلَ هَذَا الْخَمْرَ مِنْ ثَوْبِي فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَذَا رَأْيٌ رَأَيْتَهُ أَوْ شَي

An owner of beer opened the container of his beer and drops from it came in contact with clothes of Yunus and I saw him depressed until
كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرِّضَا ع أَنِّي أَعْمَلُ أَغْمَادَ السُّيُوفِ مِنْ جُلُودِ الْحُمُرِ الْمَيْتَةِ فَيُصِيبُ ثِيَابِي فَأُصَلِّي فِيهَا فَكَتَبَ ع إِلَيَّ اتَّخِذْ ثَوْباً لِصَلَاتِكَ فَكَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ع كُنْتُ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِيكَ ع بِكَذَا وَ كَذَا فَصَعَّبَ عَلَيَّ ذَلِكَ فَصِرْتُ أَعْمَلُهَا مِنْ جُلُودِ الْحُمُرِ الْوَحْشِيَّةِ الذَّكِيَّةِ فَكَتَبَ ع إِلَيَّ كُلُ[1] أَعْمَالِ الْبِرِّ
“I once wrote to al-Rida’ (a.s.), saying, ‘I make sword sheathing of leather from dead donkeys. My clothes come in contact with it and I perform Salah (prayer) with them. He (the Imam) (a.s.), wrote to me, ‘Find other clothes for your Salah (prayer).’ I then wrote to abu Ja’far, the second (a.s.), saying, ‘I would writ
قُلْتُ لَهُ أَ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ وَ هُوَ مُتَلَثِّمٌ فَقَالَ أَمَّا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ فَلَا وَ أَمَّا عَلَى الدَّابَّةِ فَلَا بَأْسَ.
“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man’s performing Salah (prayer) with his face veiled. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not permissible while on the ground; however, while riding on a stumper is not an offense.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ عَلَيْهِ خِضَابُهُ قَالَ لَا يُصَلِّي وَ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ وَ لَكِنْ يَنْزِعُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ حِنَّاهُ وَ خِرْقَتَهُ نَظِيفَةٌ فَقَالَ لَا يُصَلِّي وَ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ أَيْضاً لَا تُصَلِّي وَ عَلَيْهَا خِضَابُهَا.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from al-Husayn ibn ‘Uthman from ibn Muskan from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with dyes (paint) on him. كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ[2] قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ.
“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and asked saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I perform Sajdah (prostration) and my hands are inside my clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you want, you can do so.’ He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) then said, ‘I, by Allah, am no
فِي الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ هُوَ يُومِئُ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ قَالَ يَكْشِفُ مَوْضِعَ السُّجُودِ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Sajdah (prostration) on the saddle while on horseback, has said, ‘He must clear the place for his Sajdah (prostration).”’
فِي رَجُلٍ صَلَّى فَرِيضَةً وَ هُوَ مُعَقَّصُ الشَّعْرِ[2] قَالَ يُعِيدُ صَلَاتَهُ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who bundles up his hairs on the top of his head, has said, ‘He is required to perform his Salah (prayer) again.’” (Fatwa best explains this Hadith.)
إِنَّا نَأْمُرُ صِبْيَانَنَا بِالصَّلَاةِ إِذَا كَانُوا بَنِي خَمْسِ سِنِينَ فَمُرُوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ إِذَا كَانُوا بَنِي سَبْعِ سِنِينَ وَ نَحْنُ نَأْمُرُ صِبْيَانَنَا بِالصَّوْمِ إِذَا كَانُوا بَنِي سَبْعِ سِنِينَ بِمَا أَطَاقُوا مِنْ صِيَامِ الْيَوْمِ إِنْ كَانَ إِلَى نِصْفِ النَّهَارِ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أَوْ أَقَلَّ فَإِذَا غَلَبَهُمُ الْعَطَشُ وَ الْغَرَثُ[3] أَفْطَرُوا حَتَّى يَتَعَوَّدُوا ال
“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘We instruct our children to perform Salah (prayer) when they are five years old. Instruct your children to perform Salah (prayer) when they are seven years old. We instruct our children to fast when they are seven years old if they can endure fasting even up to midday, or more than th
كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ص يَأْمُرُ الصِّبْيَانَ يَجْمَعُونَ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَ الْعِشَاءِ وَ يَقُولُ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَنَامُوا عَنْهَا.
“Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), would instruct children to perform Salah (prayer) of al-Maghrib and al-‘Isha’ soon, one after the other, saying that it is better for them than falling asleep.”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصِّبْيَانِ إِذَا صَفُّوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ قَالَ لَا تُؤَخِّرُوهُمْ[4] عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ وَ فَرِّقُوا بَيْنَهُمْ.
‘Do not push them back from obligatory but separate them from each other (boys from girls).’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَ تُصَلِّي النَّوَافِلَ وَ أَنْتَ قَاعِدٌ فَقَالَ مَا أُصَلِّيهَا إِلَّا وَ أَنَا قَاعِدٌ مُنْذُ حَمَلْتُ هَذَا اللَّحْمَ وَ بَلَغْتُ هَذَا السِّنَّ.
“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), ’Do you perform optional Salah (prayer) in a sitting position? He (the Imam) replied, ‘I perform them in a sitting position only from the time I have gained this much weight and reached this age.’”
قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ نَقُولُ مَنْ صَلَّى وَ هُوَ جَالِسٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ كَانَتْ صَلَاتُهُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ بِسَجْدَةٍ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ هُوَ هَكَذَا هِيَ تَامَّةٌ لَكُمْ.
“I once said to abu Ja’far (a.s.), that we speak and say that whoever performs Salah (prayer) in a sitting position without good reason, his two Rak’at are counted as one Rak’at and his two Sajdah (prostration) are counted as one Sajdah (prostration). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not that way. It is complete for you.’”
إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُوعَكُ وَ يَحْرَجُ[1] وَ لَكِنَّهُ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِنَفْسِهِ وَ لَكِنْ إِذَا قَوِيَ فَلْيَقُمْ.
‘A man is unwell and experiences anguish; however, he knows better about himself. When he is able he must stand up.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ وَ الْمَرْأَةِ يَذْهَبُ بَصَرُهُ فَيَأْتِيهِ الْأَطِبَّاءُ فَيَقُولُونَ نُدَاوِيكَ شَهْراً أَوْ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً مُسْتَلْقِياً كَذَلِكَ يُصَلِّي فَرَخَّصَ فِي ذَلِكَ وَ قَالَ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ باغٍ وَ لا عادٍ فَلا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ[2].
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man and a woman who lose their eyesight. Physicians say that they can treat them within a month or forty nights while they remain lying down on their back. Can they perform Salah (prayer) in this condition? He (the Imam) gave permission saying, ‘(Permission is granted to) th
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَرِيضِ إِذَا لَمْ يَسْتَطِعِ الْقِيَامَ وَ السُّجُودَ قَالَ يُومِئُ بِرَأْسِهِ إِيمَاءً وَ أَنْ يَضَعَ جَبْهَتَهُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who suffers from an illness and is not able to stand up and perform Sujud (prostrations). He (the Imam) said, ‘He is required to perform his Salah (prayer) by making gestures with his head, and placing his forehead on the ground is lovelier to me.’”
الْمَرِيضُ يُومِئُ إِيمَاءً.
“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘People suffering from illness can make gestures in their Salah (prayer).”’
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الْمَبْطُونِ فَقَالَ يَبْنِي عَلَى صَلَاتِهِ.
“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the case of one who suffers from an internal illness because of which is not able to control anal discharge. He (the Imam) said, ‘He continues his Salah (prayer) wherever in Salah (prayer) he is.’”
قُلْتُ الرَّجُلُ يُصَلِّي وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ فَيَقْرَأُ السُّورَةَ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْتِمَهَا قَامَ فَرَكَعَ بِآخِرِهَا قَالَ صَلَاتُهُ صَلَاةُ الْقَائِمِ.
“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in a sitting position. He recites Surah (chapter). When he wants to complete it he stands up then performs Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees). He (the Imam) said, ‘His Salah (prayer) is like that of the one who performs it in a standing position.’
لَا بَأْسَ وَ لَا أَرَاهُ إِلَّا قَالَ فِي الْمُعْتَلِّ وَ الْمَرِيضِ. - وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ يُصَلِّي مُتَرَبِّعاً وَ مَادّاً رِجْلَيْهِ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ وَاسِعٌ.
“Sinan once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who during Salah (prayer) stretches one of his legs in his front while he is sitting. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’ I do not think except that he (the Imam) said it about one with health problems or illness. In another Hadith it is said that he can perform
سُئِلَ[1] عَنِ الْأَسِيرِ يَأْسِرُهُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ فَتَحْضُرُ الصَّلَاةُ وَ يَمْنَعُهُ الَّذِي أَسَرَهُ مِنْهَا قَالَ يُومِئُ إِيمَاءً.
“He (the Imam) (a.s.), was asked about the captive of the pagans. It becomes time for Salah (prayer) and the captor does not allow him to perform Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘He performs Salah (prayer) by making gestures.’”
الصَّحِيحُ يُصَلِّي قَائِماً وَ قُعُوداً الْمَرِيضُ يُصَلِّي جَالِساً وَ عَلى جُنُوبِهِمْ الَّذِي يَكُونُ أَضْعَفَ مِنَ الْمَرِيضِ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي جَالِساً.
“About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . those who speak of Allah, standing, sitting and while lying on their sides. . .’ (32:15) abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘A healthy person performs Salah (prayer) standing. يُصَلِّي الْمَرِيضُ قَائماً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ على ذلك صلى قاعدا فان لم يقدر صَلَّى مُسْتَلْقِياً يُكَبِّرُ ثُمَّ يَقْرَأُ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ الرُّكُوعَ غَمَّضَ عَيْنَيْهِ ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ ثُمَّ يَفْتَحُ عَيْنَيْهِ فَيَكُونُ فَتْحُ عَيْنَيْهِ رَفْعَ رَأْسِهِ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ غَمَّضَ عَيْنَيْهِ ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ فَإِذَا سَبَّحَ فَتَحَ عَيْنَيْهِ فَيَكُونُ فَتْحُ عَيْنَيْهِ رَفْعَ رَأْسِهِ مِنَ الس
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One suffering from an illness performs Salah (prayer) in a sitting position; if one cannot do this also, one does so while lying on one’s back, says Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) then recites. سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَرِيضِ أَ يَحِلُّ لَهُ أَنْ يَقُومَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ وَ يَسْجُدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ قَالَ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ الْفِرَاشُ غَلِيظاً قَدْرَ آجُرَّةٍ أَوْ أَقَلَّ اسْتَقَامَ لَهُ أَنْ يَقُومَ عَلَيْهِ وَ يَسْجُدَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَلَا.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who suffers from an illness: if it is permissible to stand up on his floor furnishing and perform Sajdah (prostration) on earth. He (the Imam) said, ‘If the furnishing is thick of the size of a brick or less, he can stand up on it and perform Sajdah (prostration) on eart
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْمَرِيضِ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ فَقَالَ كُلُّ مَا غَلَبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَى بِالْعُذْرِ.
“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of one who is ill and is not able to perform Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘One whom Allah has over powered, then Allah is the first to pardon.”’
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الْمَرِيضِ يَقْضِي الصَّلَاةَ إِذَا أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about one suffering from illness if one is required to perform one’s Salah (prayer) again which is missed during the time of fainting condition. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, one is not required to perform such Salah (prayer) again.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ أَيَّاماً لَمْ يُصَلِّ ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ أَ يُصَلِّي مَا فَاتَهُ قَالَ لَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْهِ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who remains fainted for several days, unable to perform any Salah (prayer), who then gains consciousness; if he is required, what is missed, to perform his Salah (prayer) again. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is not obligated to perform it again.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَرِيضِ يُغْمَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُفِيقُ كَيْفَ يَقْضِي صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ يَقْضِي الصَّلَاةَ الَّتِي أَدْرَكَ وَقْتَهَا.
“I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a patient who faints and then gains consciousness, if he is required to perform his Salah (prayer) again. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is required to perform only those Salah (prayer) again for which there was still time after his gaining consciousness.’”
قُلْتُ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مَرِضَ فَتَرَكَ النَّافِلَةَ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ لَيْسَتْ بِفَرِيضَةٍ إِنْ قَضَاهَا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ يَفْعَلُهُ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ فَلَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْهِ.
“I once said to him (the Imam) (a.s.), ‘There is a man who has become ill and has omitted optional Salah (prayer).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘O Muhammad, it is not obligatory Salah (prayer). If he performs, it is a good deed that he does. If he did not do, he is not required to perform it.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةُ السَّنَةِ مِنْ مَرَضٍ قَالَ لَا يَقْضِي[1].
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man upon whom Salah (prayer) for one year has accumulated because of illness. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is not required to perform such Salah (prayer).”’
سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ فِي الْمُغْمَى عَلَيْهِ قَالَ مَا غَلَبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ[2] فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَى بِالْعُذْرِ.
‘Whomever Allah overpowers, Allah is the first to pardon.’”
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع يَقُولُ مَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ بِيَوْمٍ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ.
‘The sun does not shine on anything (other days) more excellent than Friday.”’
إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ نَزَلَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ مَعَهُمْ قَرَاطِيسُ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَ أَقْلَامٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَيَجْلِسُونَ عَلَى أَبْوَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَى كَرَاسِيَّ مِنْ نُورٍ فَيَكْتُبُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَى مَنَازِلِهِمُ الْأَوَّلَ وَ الثَّانِيَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ الْإِمَامُ فَإِذَا خَرَجَ الْإِمَامُ طَوَوْا صُحُفَهُمْ وَ لَا يَهْبِطُونَ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ الْأَيَّامِ إِلَّا فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ يَعْن
“Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘On Fridays, prominent angels come down with paper of silver and pens of gold and sit on the doors of Masjids on chairs of light and write people according to their grades such as first, second . . . until the Imam (prayer leader) comes out. When he comes out they (angels) roll up their pa
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَسْتَحِبُّ إِذَا دَخَلَ وَ إِذَا خَرَجَ فِي الشِّتَاءِ أَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ اللَّهَ اخْتَارَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَيْئاً فَاخْتَارَ مِنَ الْأَيَّامِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ.
‘The Messenger of Allah loved it, when traveling or coming home in winter, to be on Friday nights.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has also said, ‘Allah has chosen something from everything. From days He has chosen Friday.’”
السَّاعَةُ الَّتِي يُسْتَجَابُ فِيهَا الدُّعَاءُ- يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ مَا بَيْنَ فَرَاغِ الْإِمَامِ مِنَ الْخُطْبَةِ إِلَى أَنْ يَسْتَوِيَ النَّاسُ فِي الصُّفُوفِ وَ سَاعَةٌ أُخْرَى مِنْ آخِرِ النَّهَارِ إِلَى غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ.
‘The hour of Friday wherein prayers are answered is the time when the prayer leader completes the sermons, until people get ready in rows for Salah (prayer). The other hour is the time at the end of the day to sunset.’”
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ سَيِّدُ الْأَيَّامِ يُضَاعِفُ اللَّهَ فِيهِ الْحَسَنَاتِ وَ يَمْحُو فِيهِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَ يَرْفَعُ فِيهِ الدَّرَجَاتِ وَ يَسْتَجِيبُ فِيهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ وَ يَكْشِفُ فِيهِ الْكُرُبَاتِ وَ يَقْضِي فِيهِ الْحَوَائِجَ الْعِظَامَ وَ هُوَ يَوْمُ الْمَزِيدِ لِلَّهِ فِيهِ عُتَقَاءُ وَ طُلَقَاءُ مِنَ النَّارِ مَا دَعَا بِهِ أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَ قَدْ عَرَفَ حَقَّهُ وَ حُرْمَ

إِنَّ لِلْجُمُعَةِ حَقّاً وَ حُرْمَةً فَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تُضَيِّعَ أَوْ تُقَصِّرَ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ اللَّهِ وَ التَّقَرُّبِ إِلَيْهِ بِالْعَمَلِ الصَّالِحِ وَ تَرْكِ الْمَحَارِمِ كُلِّهَا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُضَاعِفُ فِيهِ الْحَسَنَاتِ وَ يَمْحُو فِيهِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَ يَرْفَعُ فِيهِ الدَّرَجَاتِ قَالَ وَ ذَكَرَ أَنَّ يَوْمَهُ مِثْلُ لَيْلَتِهِ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تُحْيِيَهَا بِالصَّلَاةِ وَ الدُّعَاءِ فَافْعَ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘For Friday there are rights and respect, you must not fail to observe them or have shortcomings in worshipping Allah or in striving to become nearer to Him through good deeds and through refraining from all prohibited matters. قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ كَيْفَ سُمِّيَتِ الْجُمُعَةُ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ جَمَعَ فِيهَا خَلْقَهُ لِوَلَايَةِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ وَصِيِّهِ فِي الْمِيثَاقِ فَسَمَّاهُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ لِجَمْعِهِ فِيهِ خَلْقَهُ.
The Imam said, ’Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Glorious, brought His creatures under the Divine Authority of Muhammad (a.s.), and the Executor of his will during “the divine Covenant session”, and that session was called “al-Jumu‘ah” (the assembly) because of His calling His creatures together.’”
سُئِلَ عَنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ لَيْلَتِهَا فَقَالَ لَيْلَتُهَا غَرَّاءُ وَ يَوْمُهَا يَوْمٌ زَاهِرٌ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ يَوْمٌ تَغْرُبُ فِيهِ الشَّمْسُ أَكْثَرَ مُعَافًى مِنَ النَّارِ مِنْهُ مَنْ مَاتَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَارِفاً بِحَقِّ أَهْلِ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بَرَاءَةً مِنَ النَّارِ وَ بَرَاءَةً مِنَ الْعَذَابِ وَ مَنْ مَاتَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ أُعْتِقَ مِنَ النَّارِ.
“Someone asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about Friday and its night. The Imam replied, ’Friday night is the finest; its day is brilliant.
