إِيَّاكَ وَ الْتِحَافَ الصَّمَّاءِ قُلْتُ وَ مَا الْتِحَافُ الصَّمَّاءِ قَالَ أَنْ تُدْخِلَ الثَّوْبَ مِنْ تَحْتِ جَنَاحِكَ فَتَجْعَلَهُ عَلَى مَنْكِبٍ وَاحِدٍ[3].
“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Never use Iltihaf al-Samma’. I then asked, ‘What is Iltihaf al-Samma’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is to insert clothes under your arms and secure them on one shoulder (as if placing yourself in a bag).”’
يَجْعَلُ التِّكَّةَ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ.
“About a man who performs Salah (prayer) wearing a pant (pajama) with no other clothes, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘He is to secure it with a drawstring to his shoulder.’”
سَأَلَ مُرَازِمٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا مَعَهُ حَاضِرٌ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الْحَاضِرِ يُصَلِّي فِي إِزَارٍ مُرْتَدِياً بِهِ[2] قَالَ يَجْعَلُ عَلَى رَقَبَتِهِ مِنْدِيلًا أَوْ عِمَامَةً يَتَرَدَّى بِهِ.
‘He is to secure it with a handkerchief or turban to his neck when wearing.’”
لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ تَتَوَشَّحَ بِإِزَارٍ فَوْقَ الْقَمِيصِ وَ أَنْتَ تُصَلِّي وَ لَا تَتَّزِرْ بِإِزَارٍ فَوْقَ الْقَمِيصِ إِذَا أَنْتَ صَلَّيْتَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ زِيِّ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ.
“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not proper to throw a loincloth over a shirt when performing Salah (prayer) or use a loincloth on a shirt when performing Salah (prayer); it is of the manner of dressing in the pre-Islamic age of darkness.”’
لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ وَ إِزَارُهُ مُحَلَّلَةٌ إِنَّ دِينَ مُحَمَّدٍ ص حَنِيفٌ.
“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not an offense if one of you perform Salah (prayer) in one piece of cloth and his loincloth is not secured; religion of Muhammad, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, is upright.’”
لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِذَا رَفَعَهُ إِلَى الثُّنْدُوَتَيْنِ[4].
“The person who had heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), narrated to me about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one piece of cloth using it as a loincloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it if he raises it up to his chest.’”
إِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبٌ آخَرُ إِزَارٌ أَوْ سَرَاوِيلُ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَلَا يَجُوزُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ وَ إِنْ أَدْخَلَ يَداً وَاحِدَةً وَ لَمْ يُدْخِلِ الْأُخْرَى فَلَا بَأْسَ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who when performing Salah (prayer) enters his hands under his clothes. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if he has other clothes on him, like a loincloth or pant (pajama); otherwise, it is not permissible, however, entering one hand is not harmful.’”
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع تُصَلِّي الْمَرْأَةُ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَثْوَابٍ إِزَارٍ وَ دِرْعٍ وَ خِمَارٍ وَ لَا يَضُرُّهَا بِأَنْ تَقَنَّعَ بِالْخِمَارِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدْ فَثَوْبَيْنِ تَتَّزِرُ بِأَحَدِهِمَا وَ تَقَنَّعُ بِالْآخَرِ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ كَانَ دِرْعٌ وَ مِلْحَفَةٌ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهَا مِقْنَعَةٌ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا تَقَنَّعَتْ بِالْمِلْحَفَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكْفِهَا فَلْتَلْبَسْهَا طُولًا.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Women perform Salah (prayer) in three pieces of clothes: Loincloth, an outer garment with sleeves, and a yashmak. It is not harmful if she uses the Yashmak as a veil and if she does not find, she can use two pieces of clothes using one as loincloth and the other as a veil.’ I (the nar
لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ يُصَلِّيَ الرَّجُلُ وَ ثَوْبُهُ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ وَ مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَيُسْبِلُهُ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ[1] وَ لَا يَلْتَحِفُ بِهِ وَ أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ رَآهُ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ.
‘It is not an offense if a man performs Salah (prayer) with his clothes on his back and shoulder to allow them to hang downward to the ground and he does not use it as a bed-sheet, as I am told it is done so.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ[2] عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَشْتَمِلُ فِي صَلَاةٍ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ قَالَ لَا يَشْتَمِلُ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ فَأَمَّا أَنْ يَتَوَشَّحَ فَيُغَطِّيَ مَنْكِبَيْهِ فَلَا بَأْسَ.
“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who wraps himself up in one piece of cloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘He does not wrap himself up in one piece of cloth, but if he uses it as an outer garment that covers his shoulders, it is not harmful.’”
لَا يَصْلُحُ لِلْمَرْأَةِ الْمُسْلِمَةِ أَنْ تَلْبَسَ مِنَ الْخُمُرِ وَ الدُّرُوعِ مَا لَا يُوَارِي شَيْئاً[3].
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not proper for a Muslim woman to wear of the veils and outer garment the kind that does not provide any covering.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ[4] عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَكُونُ فِي فَلَاةٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا ثَوْبٌ وَاحِدٌ وَ أَجْنَبَ فِيهِ وَ لَيْسَ عِنْدَهُ مَاءٌ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ يَتَيَمَّمُ وَ يُصَلِّي عُرْيَاناً قَاعِداً يُومِئُ إِيمَاءً.
“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who is in wilderness and has no other clothes except one piece and has experienced sexual relation in it. He does not have water. What must he do? He (the Imam) said, ‘He takes Tayammum and performs Salah (prayer) in a sitting position and makes gestures.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ مِنْ سَفِينَةٍ عُرْيَاناً أَوْ سُلِبَ ثِيَابُهُ وَ لَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئاً يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَقَالَ يُصَلِّي إِيمَاءً فَإِنْ كَانَتِ امْرَأَةً جَعَلَتْ يَدَهَا عَلَى فَرْجِهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَ رَجُلًا وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى سَوْأَتِهِ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسَانِ فَيُومِئَانِ إِيمَاءً وَ لَا يَسْجُدَانِ وَ لَا يَرْكَعَانِ فَيَبْدُو مَا خَلْفَهُمَا تَكُونُ صَلَاتُهُمَا إِيمَاءً بِرُءُوسِهِمَا قَالَ و
“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man who sails in a boat while naked or his clothes are looted and does not find anything to perform Salah (prayer) with. He (the Imam) said, ‘He performs Salah (prayer) by making gestures and a woman in such condition places her hand over her vagina, and if a man, he places his
سَأَلَ زُرَارَةُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي الثَّعَالِبِ وَ الْفَنَكِ[1] وَ السِّنْجَابِ وَ غَيْرِهِ مِنَ الْوَبَرِ فَأَخْرَجَ كِتَاباً زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ إِمْلَاءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص أَنَّ الصَّلَاةَ فِي وَبَرِ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَرَامٍ أَكْلُهُ فَالصَّلَاةُ فِي وَبَرِهِ وَ شَعْرِهِ وَ جِلْدِهِ وَ بَوْلِهِ وَ رَوْثِهِ وَ أَلْبَانِهِ وَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ فَاسِدَةٌ لَا تُقْبَلُ تِلْكَ الصَّلَاةُ حَتَّى تُصَ
“Zurarah once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about foxes, fennec and squirrel and so on of hair. He (the Imam) then took out a book that he (the Imam) thought was of the dictations of the Messenger of Allah and it said, ’Salah (prayer) performed with hair of everything of inedible flesh is unlawful. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي الْفِرَاءِ قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ص رَجُلًا صَرِداً لَا تُدْفِئُهُ فِرَاءُ الْحِجَازِ لِأَنَّ دِبَاغَتَهَا بِالْقَرَظِ[2] فَكَانَ يَبْعَثُ إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ فَيُؤْتَى مِمَّا قِبَلَهُمْ[3] بِالْفَرْوِ فَيَلْبَسُهُ فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ أَلْقَاهُ وَ أَلْقَى الْقَمِيصَ الَّذِي تَحْتَهُ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ فَكَانَ يُسْأَلُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَهْل
“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about Salah (prayer) with furs. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn was sensitive to cold and fur from Hijaz was not sufficient for him because tanning is by the pod of a species of a tree. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنْ لِبَاسِ الْفِرَاءِ وَ الصَّلَاةِ فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهَا إِلَّا فِيمَا كَانَ مِنْهُ ذَكِيّاً قَالَ قُلْتُ أَ وَ لَيْسَ الذَّكِيُّ مِمَّا ذُكِّيَ بِالْحَدِيدِ فَقَالَ بَلَى إِذَا كَانَ مِمَّا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهُ قُلْتُ وَ مَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهُ[1] مِنْ غَيْرِ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِالسِّنْجَابِ فَإِنَّهُ دَابَّةٌ لَا تَأْكُلُ اللَّحْمَ وَ لَيْسَ هُ
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, and abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about clothes of fur in Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) with it unless it is made clean, by properly slaughtering.’ I then asked, ’Is proper slaughtering done with iron? He (the Imam) said, ’Yes, if it is of edible flesh.’ I then
تُكْرَهُ الصَّلَاةُ فِي الْفِرَاءِ إِلَّا مَا صُنِعَ فِي أَرْضِ الْحِجَازِ أَوْ مِمَّا عُلِمَتْ مِنْهُ ذَكَاةٌ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is undesirable to perform Salah (prayer) in fur except those made in al-Hijaz or that you know is properly slaughtered.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي أَدْخُلُ سُوقَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَعْنِي هَذَا الْخَلْقَ الَّذِينَ يَدَّعُونَ الْإِسْلَامَ فَأَشْتَرِي مِنْهُمُ الْفِرَاءَ لِلتِّجَارَةِ فَأَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهَا أَ لَيْسَ هِيَ ذَكِيَّةٌ فَيَقُولُ بَلَى فَهَلْ يَصْلُحُ لِي أَنْ أَبِيعَهَا عَلَى أَنَّهَا ذَكِيَّةٌ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ تَبِيعَهَا[2] وَ تَقُولَ قَدْ شَرَطَ لِيَ الَّذِي اشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْهُ أَنَّهَا ذَك
“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I enter al-Suq (market place) of Muslims, meaning thereby these people who are called Muslims and buy from them fur for business purposes. I ask the owner, ‘Is it of properly slaughtered animals?’ He says, ‘Yes, it is of properly slaughtered animals.’ Can I sell it as that from p
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ الْمَيْتَةُ يُنْتَفَعُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْهَا قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الشَّاةِ إِذْ لَمْ يَنْتَفِعُوا بِلَحْمِهَا أَنْ يَنْتَفِعُوا بِإِهَابِهَا[3] قَالَ تِلْكَ شَاةٌ لِسَوْدَةَ بِنْتِ زَمْعَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ص وَ كَانَتْ شَاةً مَهْزُولَةً لَا يُنْتَفَعُ بِلَحْمِهَا فَتَرَكُوهَا حَتَّ
If they could not benefit from its flesh they could benefit from its skin.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That goat belonged to Sawdah, daughter of Zam‘ah, wife of the Holy prophet. It was an emaciated ewe and its flesh was not useable, so they left until it died. Thus, the Holy prophet, said, ‘If the owners could not benefit f
كَتَبَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ص مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْفَرْوِ يُشْتَرَى مِنَ السُّوقِ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ مَضْمُوناً فَلَا بَأْسَ.
‘If it is (lawfully) guaranteed, then it is not an offense to buy it.’”
وَ ذَكَرَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع أَنَّهُ سَأَلَهُ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِي الثَّوْبِ الَّذِي فَوْقَهُ وَ لَا فِي الَّذِي تَحْتَهُ.
“He had asked him (the Imam) about performing Salah (prayer) with foxes (things from it) and he (the Imam) prohibited him to perform Salah (prayer) in such things and with the clothes which is the next layer. He (the man) did not know which layer was meant; the one touching the furs or the one touching one’s skin. He (
كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ[3] إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ عِنْدَنَا جَوَارِبُ وَ تِكَكٌ تُعْمَلُ مِنْ وَبَرِ الْأَرَانِبِ فَهَلْ تَجُوزُ الصَّلَاةُ فِي وَبَرِ الْأَرَانِبِ مِنْ غَيْرِ ضَرُورَةٍ وَ لَا تَقِيَّةٍ فَكَتَبَ ع لَا تَجُوزُ الصَّلَاةُ فِيهَا.
“Ibrahim ibn ‘Uqbah once wrote to him (the Imam) (a.s.), asking, ‘People here make socks and waistbands from the fur of foxes. Is it permissible to perform Salah (prayer) with it without Taqiyah (fear) or necessity? He (the Imam) wrote with his hand writing, ‘It is not permissible to perform Salah (prayer) with it.’”
كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ ع أَسْأَلُهُ هَلْ يُصَلَّى فِي قَلَنْسُوَةِ حَرِيرٍ مَحْضٍ أَوْ قَلَنْسُوَةِ دِيبَاجٍ فَكَتَبَ ع لَا تَحِلُّ الصَّلَاةُ فِي حَرِيرٍ مَحْضٍ.
‘It is not lawful to perform Salah (prayer) with pure silk.’”
كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْخَزَّازِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِي الْخَزِّ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فِيهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّهُ مَيِّتٌ وَ هُوَ عِلَاجِي[1] وَ أَنَا أَعْرِفُهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنَا أَعْرَفُ بِهِ مِنْكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ إِنَّهُ عِلَاجِي وَ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ أَعْرَفَ بِهِ
“Once I was in the presence of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when a man of al-Khazzazin came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, ‘What do you say about performing Salah (prayer) with al-Khazz? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense to perform Salah (prayer) with it.’ A man then said to him
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي جُلُودِ السِّبَاعِ فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهَا قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ هَلْ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ فِي ثَوْبِ إِبْرِيسَمٍ فَقَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan al-Rida’ (a.s.), about performing Salah (prayer) with the skin of beasts. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) with it.’ He (the narrator) has said that he then asked him (the Imam) about performing Salah (prayer) with Abrisam (silk). He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not permissi
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ مَعَهُ السِّكِّينُ فِي خُفِّهِ لَا يَسْتَغْنِي عَنْهَا أَوْ فِي سَرَاوِيلِهِ مَشْدُوداً وَ الْمِفْتَاحُ يَخَافُ عَلَيْهِ الضَّيْعَةَ أَوْ فِي وَسَطِهِ الْمِنْطَقَةُ فِيهَا حَدِيدٌ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِالسِّكِّينِ وَ الْمِنْطَقَةِ لِلْمُسَافِرِ فِي وَقْتِ ضَرُورَةٍ وَ كَذَلِكَ الْمِفْتَاحُ يَخَافُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْ فِي النِّسْيَانِ وَ لَا بَأْسَ بِالسَّيْفِ وَ كَذَلِكَ آلَة
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who on a journey has a knife in his slipper without which he cannot do anything or it is in his pant, and a key which he is afraid of losing it, or that around his midsection is a belt in which there is iron. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense to have a knife, or
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْفِرَاءِ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الْفِرَاءِ قُلْتُ الْفَنَكَ وَ السِّنْجَابَ وَ السَّمُّورَ قَالَ فَصَلِّ فِي الْفَنَكِ وَ السِّنْجَابِ- فَأَمَّا السَّمُّورُ[1] فَلَا تُصَلِّ فِيهِ قُلْتُ فَالثَّعَالِبُ نُصَلِّي فِيهَا قَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ تَلْبَسُ بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ قُلْتُ أُصَلِّي فِي الثَّوْبِ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ قَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu Ja‘far al-Thaniy (a.s.), about furs if performing Salah (prayer) with it is permissible. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Which kind of fur is it?’ I replied, ‘Fennec, squirrel and sable. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can perform Salah (prayer) with fennec and squirrel. Do not perform Salah (prayer) with the fur of s
الرَّجُلُ إِذَا اتَّزَرَ بِثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ إِلَى ثُنْدُوَتِهِ صَلَّى فِيهِ قَالَ[3] وَ قَرَأْتُ فِي كِتَابِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْفَنَكِ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ فَكَتَبَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ كَتَبَ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ جُلُودِ الْأَرَانِبِ فَكَتَبَ ع مَكْرُوهٌ وَ كَتَبَ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ ثَوْبٍ حَشْوُهُ قَزٌّ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ فَكَتَبَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ[4].
“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man covers himself with a loincloth up to his two breast he can perform Salah (prayer) with it. He (the narrator) has said that he read in the letter of Muhammad ibn Ibrahim to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), in which he had asked about fennec if it is permissible to perform Salah (prayer)
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي السَّمُّورِ وَ السِّنْجَابِ وَ الثَّعْلَبِ فَقَالَ لَا خَيْرَ فِي ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ مَا خَلَا السِّنْجَابَ فَإِنَّهُ دَابَّةٌ لَا تَأْكُلُ اللَّحْمَ.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about performing Salah (prayer) with sable, squirrel and fox. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is nothing good with all of it except squirrel which is an animal that does not eat meat.’”
أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ وَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبٌ فِيهِ تَمَاثِيلُ[1]
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), disliked to perform Salah (prayer) with clothes that had portraits on them.’”
قُلْتُ لَهُ الطَّيْلَسَانُ يَعْمَلُهُ الْمَجُوسُ أُصَلِّي فِيهِ قَالَ أَ لَيْسَ يُغْسَلُ بِالْمَاءِ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ قُلْتُ الثَّوْبُ الْجَدِيدُ يَعْمَلُهُ الْحَائِكُ أُصَلِّي فِيهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ.
“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the shawl made by Zoroastrians if I can perform Salah (prayer) with it. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Can it be washed with water?’ I replied, ‘Yes, it can be washed.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense to perform Salah (prayer) with it.’ I then asked about cloths made by the weave
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَ فِي إِزَارِهَا وَ يَعْتَمُّ بِخِمَارِهَا قَالَ نَعَمْ إِذَا كَانَتْ مَأْمُونَةً.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with clothes of woman, with her loincloth and uses her veil as a turban. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is acceptable if she is trusted.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الدَّرَاهِمِ السُّودِ الَّتِي فِيهَا التَّمَاثِيلُ أَ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ وَ هِيَ مَعَهُ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَتْ مُوَارَاةً.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with black dirhams which have portraits on them. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if they are hidden.’”
قَالَ: لَا بُدَّ لِلنَّاسِ مِنْ حِفْظِ بَضَائِعِهِمْ فَإِنْ صَلَّى وَ هِيَ مَعَهُ فَلْتَكُنْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ وَ لَا يَجْعَلْ شَيْئاً مِنْهَا بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ.
“He (the Imam) (a.s.), has said, ‘ People must protect their properties. When performing Salah (prayer) with their belongings around, such things are kept behind them but are not placed between them and al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah).”
تُكْرَهُ الصَّلَاةُ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْمَصْبُوغِ الْمُشْبَعِ الْمُفْدَمِ[3].
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is undesirable to perform Salah (prayer) in clothes dyed with sharply saturated colors.”’
صَلِّ فِي مِنْدِيلِكَ الَّذِي تَتَمَنْدَلُ بِهِ وَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِي مِنْدِيلٍ يَتَمَنْدَلُ بِهِ غَيْرُكَ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Perform Salah (prayer) with your own handkerchief but not with others’ handkerchief.’”
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا تُصَلِّ فِيمَا شَفَّ أَوْ سُفَّ يَعْنِي الثَّوْبَ الْمُصَيْقَلَ[4]. - وَ رُوِيَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِي ثَوْبٍ أَسْوَدَ فَأَمَّا الْخُفُّ أَوِ الْكِسَاءُ أَوِ الْعِمَامَةُ فَلَا بَأْسَ.
24. Muhammad ibn Yahya in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘You must not perform Salah (prayer) in cloths that are shaffa or suffa, that is, that which is painted.’” In another Hadith it is said, ‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) in black clothes; however, black slipper, cloak or t
فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهَا فَإِنَّهَا تُدْبَغُ بِخُرْءِ الْكِلَابِ.
‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) with them because it is tanned with the leftover of dogs.’”
فِي الْخَزِّ الْخَالِصِ أَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ فَأَمَّا الَّذِي يُخْلَطُ فِيهِ وَبَرُ الْأَرَانِبِ أَوْ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا يُشْبِهُ هَذَا فَلَا تُصَلِّ فِيهِ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about pure al-Khazz has said, ‘It is not an offense to perform Salah (prayer) with it, but do not perform Salah (prayer) with that which is mixed with fur of foxes or other things.’”
أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَلْبَسَ الْقَمِيصَ الْمَكْفُوفَ بِالدِّيبَاجِ وَ يَكْرَهُ لِبَاسَ الْحَرِيرِ وَ لِبَاسَ الْوَشْيِ- وَ يَكْرَهُ الْمِيثَرَةَ الْحَمْرَاءَ[2] فَإِنَّهَا مِيثَرَةُ إِبْلِيسَ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that he disliked wearing a shirt which has brocaded hems, cloths of silk embroideries and red saddlecloth; it is a saddlecloth of Satan.’”:
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْخِفَافُ عِنْدَنَا فِي السُّوقِ نَشْتَرِيهَا فَمَا تَرَى فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِيهَا فَقَالَ صَلِّ فِيهَا حَتَّى يُقَالَ لَكَ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ بِعَيْنِهَا.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the slippers that we buy from the market if we can perform Salah (prayer) with them. He (the Imam) said, ‘Perform Salah (prayer) with them until you are told that it exactly is from dead animals.’”
يُكْرَهُ الصَّلَاةُ إِلَّا فِي ثَلَاثَةٍ الْخُفِّ وَ الْعِمَامَةِ وَ الْكِسَاءِ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Performing Salah (prayer) is undesirable except in three items: slippers, turban, and cloak.”’
قُلْتُ لَهُ أُصَلِّي فِي الْقَلَنْسُوَةِ السَّوْدَاءِ فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِيهَا فَإِنَّهَا لِبَاسُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ[3].
“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), if I can perform Salah (prayer) with a black cap. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) with it; it is of the clothes of people of the fire.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع أَعْتَرِضُ السُّوقَ فَأَشْتَرِي خُفّاً لَا أَدْرِي أَ ذَكِيٌّ هُوَ أَمْ لَا قَالَ صَلِّ فِيهِ قُلْتُ فَالنَّعْلُ قَالَ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَضِيقُ مِنْ هَذَا قَالَ أَ تَرْغَبُ عَمَّا كَانَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع يَفْعَلُهُ.
“I once said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), that I visit the market and buy a slipper but I do not know if it is from properly slaughtered animal or not. He (the Imam) said, ‘Perform Salah (prayer) with it.’ I then asked, ‘Can I use such shoes?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is the same as slippers.’ I then said, ‘I am not comfort
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ[1] فِي جُرْمُوقٍ وَ أَتَيْتُهُ بِجُرْمُوقٍ فَبَعَثْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ يُصَلَّى فِيهِ.
“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a Jurmuq (a larger slipper worn over another one) if it is permissible to perform Salah (prayer) with it and I showed it to him (the Imam) and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is permissible to perform Salah (prayer) with it.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ صَلَّى وَ فِي كُمِّهِ طَيْرٌ قَالَ إِنْ خَافَ الذَّهَابَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَا بَأْسَ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْخَلَاخِلِ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَ الصِّبْيَانِ لُبْسُهَا فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَتْ صَمَّاءَ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ لَهَا صَوْتٌ فَلَا.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who performed Salah (prayer) with a bird in his sleeve. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he is afraid about it then it is not harmful.’ He (the narrator) has said that he then asked him (the Imam) about anklets if women and children could use them during Salah (prayer). لَا يُصَلِّ الرَّجُلُ وَ فِي تِكَّتِهِ مِفْتَاحُ حَدِيدٍ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A man does not perform Salah (prayer) with a waistband which has an iron key.’”
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لَا يُصَلِّ الرَّجُلُ وَ فِي يَدِهِ خَاتَمُ حَدِيدٍ. - وَ رُوِيَ إِذَا كَانَ الْمِفْتَاحُ فِي غِلَافٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘A man does not perform Salah (prayer) wearing an iron ring.’” “It is narrated that if a key is inside cover then it is not an offense.” (Ahadith 1-35 of this chapter are best explained by fatwa.)
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ صَلَّى فِي ثَوْبِ رَجُلٍ أَيَّاماً ثُمَّ إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الثَّوْبِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ لَا يُصَلَّى فِيهِ قَالَ لَا يُعِيدُ شَيْئاً مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) wearing another man’s clothes for many days, then the owner of clothes inform him that he does not wear them for Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘He does not need to perform any of his Salah (prayer) again.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ فِي ثَوْبِهِ عَذِرَةٌ مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ أَوْ سِنَّوْرٍ أَوْ كَلْبٍ أَ يُعِيدُ صَلَاتَهُ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ لَمْ يَعْلَمْ فَلَا يُعِيدُ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) and there is feces of human being, cat or dog in his clothes, ‘Must he perform his Salah (prayer) again?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He is not required to perform his Salah (prayer) again, if he did not know about it.’”
