The Book of Taharat (Cleansing)

قُلْتُ لَهُ فِي مَسْحِ الْخُفَّيْنِ تَقِيَّةٌ فَقَالَ‌[1] ثَلَاثَةٌ لَا أَتَّقِي فِيهِنَّ أَحَداً شُرْبُ الْمُسْكِرِ وَ مَسْحُ الْخُفَّيْنِ وَ مُتْعَةُ الْحَجِّ قَالَ زُرَارَةُ وَ لَمْ يَقُلْ الْوَاجِبُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَلَّا تَتَّقُوا فِيهِنَّ أَحَداً.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about wiping for Wudu’ over one’s shoes because of Taqiyyah (fear). He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not practice Taqiyyah before anyone in three things: Drinking intoxicating liquor, wiping for Wudu’ over the shoes and in Mut’ah during Hajj.’ Zurarah has said that he (the Imam) did not sa

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع‌[2] عَنِ الْكَسِيرِ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَبَائِرُ[3] أَوْ تَكُونُ بِهِ الْجِرَاحَةُ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ بِالْوُضُوءِ وَ عِنْدَ غُسْلِ الْجَنَابَةِ وَ غُسْلِ الْجُمُعَةِ قَالَ يَغْسِلُ مَا وَصَلَ إِلَيْهِ الْغُسْلُ‌[4] مِمَّا ظَهَرَ مِمَّا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ الْجَبَائِرُ وَ يَدَعُ مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ مِمَّا لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ غَسْلَهُ وَ لَا يَنْزِعُ الْجَبَائِرَ وَ لَا يَعْبَثُ بِجِرَاحَتِهِ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan, al-Rida (a.s.), about how to go about for Wudu’ on a broken part (to be washed or wiped for Wudu’) with bandage or a wound on them, or when taking a Ghusl (bath) due to sexual relation or Friday Ghusl (bath). He (the Imam) said, ‘One must wash the parts that are not covered by the bandage a

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْجُرْحِ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ بِهِ صَاحِبُهُ قَالَ يَغْسِلُ مَا حَوْلَهُ.

‘He must wash the area around it.’”

إِنْ كَانَ يُؤْذِيهِ الْمَاءُ فَلْيَمْسَحْ عَلَى الْخِرْقَةِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَا يُؤْذِيهِ الْمَاءُ فَلْيَنْزِعِ الْخِرْقَةَ ثُمَّ لْيَغْسِلْهَا قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْجُرْحِ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِهِ فِي غَسْلِهِ قَالَ اغْسِلْ مَا حَوْلَهُ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about a man in whose forearm there is a wound or such part to wash or wipe for Wudu’ which is bandaged with a piece of fabric, he takes Wudu’ and wipes on it when taking Wudu’. He (the Imam) said, ‘If water hurts him he must wipe over the fabric, but if water does not hurt, he must rem

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَثَرْتُ فَانْقَطَعَ ظُفُرِي فَجَعَلْتُ عَلَى إِصْبَعِي مَرَارَةً فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِالْوُضُوءِ قَالَ يُعْرَفُ هَذَا وَ أَشْبَاهُهُ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- ما جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ‌[2] امْسَحْ عَلَيْهِ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I slipped and my toe nail suffered a cut. I have placed a bitter ointment on my toe. How should I take Wudu’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This and such matters are learned from the book of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, which says, “Allah has not sanctioned anything in religion w

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَنْتَ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ فَتَوَضَّأْ وَ إِيَّاكَ أَنْ تُحْدِثَ وُضُوءاً أَبَداً حَتَّى تَسْتَيْقِنَ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْدَثْتَ.

‘When you are certain that your Wudu’ has become invalid you must take Wudu’. You must never invent a Wudu’ until you are certain that your Wudu’ has become invalid.’”

إِذَا كُنْتَ قَاعِداً عَلَى وُضُوءٍ وَ لَمْ تَدْرِ أَ غَسَلْتَ ذِرَاعَكَ أَمْ لَا فَأَعِدْ عَلَيْهَا وَ عَلَى جَمِيعِ مَا شَكَكْتَ فِيهِ أَنَّكَ لَمْ تَغْسِلْهُ أَوْ تَمْسَحْهُ مِمَّا سَمَّى اللَّهُ مَا دُمْتَ فِي حَالِ الْوُضُوءِ فَإِذَا قُمْتَ مِنَ الْوُضُوءِ وَ فَرَغْتَ فَقَدْ صِرْتَ فِي حَالٍ أُخْرَى فِي صَلَاةٍ أَوْ غَيْرِ صَلَاةٍ فَشَكَكْتَ فِي بَعْضِ مَا سَمَّى اللَّهُ مِمَّا أَوْجَبَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَلَيْكَ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘While taking Wudu’ if you are not certain of washing your forearm, you must go back to wash it and repeat all of the acts of Wudu’ that you doubt about its being washed or wiped which Allah has commanded to be done. This applies when you are still taking Wudu’, but when you complete Wudu’

إِنْ ذَكَرْتَ وَ أَنْتَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ أَنَّكَ قَدْ تَرَكْتَ شَيْئاً مِنْ وُضُوئِكَ الْمَفْرُوضِ عَلَيْكَ فَانْصَرِفْ وَ أَتِمَّ الَّذِي نَسِيتَهُ مِنْ وُضُوئِكَ وَ أَعِدْ صَلَاتَكَ وَ يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ مَسْحِ رَأْسِكَ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنْ لِحْيَتِكَ بَلَلَهَا إِذَا نَسِيتَ أَنْ تَمْسَحَ رَأْسَكَ فَتَمْسَحَ بِهِ مُقَدَّمَ رَأْسِكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If during Salah (prayer) you remember that you have left certain obligatory acts of your Wudu’ incomplete, you must go back to complete what you forgot to do out of the acts of Wudu’ and perform your Salah (prayer) again. For wiping your head and feet, it is sufficient to get moisture

إِذَا نَسِيَ الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَغْسِلَ يَمِينَهُ فَغَسَلَ شِمَالَهُ وَ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ وَ رِجْلَيْهِ وَ ذَكَرَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ غَسَلَ يَمِينَهُ وَ شِمَالَهُ وَ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ وَ رِجْلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ إِنَّمَا نَسِيَ شِمَالَهُ فَلْيَغْسِلِ الشِّمَالَ وَ لَا يُعِيدُ عَلَى مَا كَانَ تَوَضَّأَ[2] وَ قَالَ أَتْبِعْ وُضُوءَكَ بَعْضَهُ بَعْضاً.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one forgets to wash his right (forearm) but washes his left (forearm), wipes his head and feet and then remembers, he must wash his right (forearm), his left (forearm), wipe his head and feet. If one forgets to wash his left (forearm), he must wash his left (forearm) and he does no

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ تَابِعْ بَيْنَ الْوُضُوءِ[3] كَمَا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ابْدَأْ بِالْوَجْهِ ثُمَّ بِالْيَدَيْنِ ثُمَّ امْسَحِ الرَّأْسَ وَ الرِّجْلَيْنِ وَ لَا تُقَدِّمَنَّ شَيْئاً بَيْنَ يَدَيْ شَيْ‌ءٍ تُخَالِفْ مَا أُمِرْتَ بِهِ وَ إِنْ غَسَلْتَ الذِّرَاعَ قَبْلَ الْوَجْهِ فَابْدَأْ بِالْوَجْهِ وَ أَعِدْ عَلَى الذِّرَاعِ وَ إِنْ مَسَحْتَ الرِّجْلَ قَبْلَ الرَّأْسِ فَامْسَحْ عَلَى الرَّأْسِ قَبْلَ ال

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘You must maintain the sequence in the acts of Wudu’ as Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has said. You must begin to wash your face, then wash your hands (forearms), then wipe your head and feet. You must not do any of such acts before what is next in the sequential order, which (is wh

إِذَا نَسِيتَ فَغَسَلْتَ ذِرَاعَكَ قَبْلَ وَجْهِكَ فَأَعِدْ غَسْلَ وَجْهِكَ ثُمَّ اغْسِلْ ذِرَاعَيْكَ بَعْدَ الْوَجْهِ فَإِنْ بَدَأْتَ بِذِرَاعِكَ الْأَيْسَرِ قَبْلَ الْأَيْمَنِ فَأَعِدْ غَسْلَ الْأَيْمَنِ ثُمَّ اغْسِلِ الْيَسَارَ وَ إِنْ نَسِيتَ مَسْحَ رَأْسِكَ حَتَّى تَغْسِلَ رِجْلَيْكَ فَامْسَحْ رَأْسَكَ ثُمَّ اغْسِلْ رِجْلَيْكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If you forget and wash your forearm before your face, you must go back to wash your face, then wash your forearms, after washing your face. If you begin to wash your left forearm before washing your right forearm you must wash your right forearm, then wash you left forearm. If you for

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا تَوَضَّأْتَ بَعْضَ وُضُوئِكَ فَعَرَضَتْ لَكَ حَاجَةٌ حَتَّى يَنْشَفَ وَضُوؤُكَ فَأَعِدْ وُضُوءَكَ‌[1] فَإِنَّ الْوُضُوءَ لَا يَتَبَعَّضُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If while taking Wudu’ something happens that keeps you busy and your Wudu’ dries up, you must do your Wudu 5 again; it is not permissible to divide WuduY”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رُبَّمَا تَوَضَّأْتُ فَنَفِدَ الْمَاءُ فَدَعَوْتُ الْجَارِيَةَ فَأَبْطَأَتْ عَلَيَّ بِالْمَاءِ فَيَجِفُّ وَضُوئِي فَقَالَ أَعِدْ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I may sometimes begin to take Wudu’ but water is finished before Wudu’ is complete and I ask the slave-girl for more water; but she delays and my Wudu’ dries up. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must do your Wudu’ again.”’

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ نَسِيَ مِنَ الْوُضُوءِ الذِّرَاعَ وَ الرَّأْسَ قَالَ يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ إِنَّ الْوُضُوءَ يُتْبَعُ بَعْضُهُ بَعْضاً.

‘He must do it again; it is necessary to maintain the prescribed sequence in the acts of Wudu’.’”

لَيْسَ يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ إِلَّا مَا خَرَجَ مِنْ طَرَفَيْكَ الْأَسْفَلَيْنِ اللَّذَيْنِ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ بِهِمَا[3].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Wudu’ does not become invalid unless something from your two passages of lower end, which Allah has granted you, comes out.’”

سَأَلْتُ الرِّضَا ع عَنِ النَّاسُورِ[1] أَ يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ ثَلَاثٌ الْبَوْلُ وَ الْغَائِطُ وَ الرِّيحُ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan, al-Rida (a.s.), about a fistula (a bad wound) if it invalidates Wudu’ or not. He (the Imam) said, ‘Only three things invalidate Wudu’: urine, feces and gas.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَنْفُخُ فِي دُبُرِ الْإِنْسَانِ حَتَّى يُخَيَّلَ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ قَدْ خَرَجَ مِنْهُ رِيحٌ فَلَا يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ إِلَّا رِيحٌ تَسْمَعُهَا أَوْ تَجِدُ رِيحَهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Satan blows in the man’s buttocks to make him feel as if gas comes out. This does not invalidate Wudu’ unless one hears gas coming out or senses its smell.’”

لَيْسَ فِي حَبِّ الْقَرْعِ وَ الدِّيدَانَ الصِّغَارِ وُضُوءٌ إِنَّمَا هُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْقَمْلِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not necessary to take Wudu’ because of the coming out of one’s buttock, such things as pumpkin seeds or small worms; they are like lice.’”

لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ وُضُوءٌ. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ إِذَا كَانَتْ مُلَطَّخَةً بِالْعَذِرَةِ أَعَادَ الْوُضُوءَ.

“It is about the case of a man from whose buttocks such things like pumpkin seed may come out. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said, ‘It is not necessary for him to take Wudu’.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ فَقَالا مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْ طَرَفَيْكَ الْأَسْفَلَيْنِ مِنَ الدُّبُرِ وَ الذَّكَرِ غَائِطٌ أَوْ بَوْلٌ أَوْ مَنِيٌّ أَوْ رِيحٌ وَ النَّوْمُ حَتَّى يُذْهِبَ الْعَقْلَ وَ كُلُّ النَّوْمِ يُكْرَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ تَسْمَعُ الصَّوْتَ.

“I asked abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about things that invalidate Wudu’. They said, ‘Of such things are that which come out of one’s two bottom outlets, buttocks and urethra, in the form of urine or feces, semen or gas; as well as sleeping which stops understanding and all kinds of sleep is undes

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ لَهُ أَنْ يَسْتَدْخِلَ الدَّوَاءَ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّيَ وَ هُوَ مَعَهُ أَ يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ قَالَ لَا يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ وَ لَا يُصَلِّي حَتَّى يَطْرَحَهُ.

“I once asked him (the Imam), ‘Does the medicine that one may keep inside his body during Salah (prayer), invalidate his Wudu’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not invalidate his Wudu’ but he must not perform Salah (prayer) before taking it away.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَتَجَشَّأُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ أَ يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ قَالَ لَا.

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who belches and something comes out in his mouth. Is he required to take Wudu’ again?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not necessary for him to take Wudu’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْقَيْ‌ءِ هَلْ يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ قَالَ لَا.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about vomiting if it invalidates Wudu’ or not. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it does not invalidate one’s Wudu’.’”

إِذَا قَاءَ الرَّجُلُ وَ هُوَ عَلَى طُهْرٍ فَلْيَتَمَضْمَضْ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one vomits while his Wudu’ is valid, he should only rinse his mouth.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ عَلَى طُهْرٍ فَيَأْخُذُ مِنْ أَظْفَارِهِ أَوْ شَعْرِهِ أَ يُعِيدُ الْوُضُوءَ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ يَمْسَحُ رَأْسَهُ وَ أَظْفَارَهُ بِالْمَاءِ[1] قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّ فِيهِ الْوُضُوءَ فَقَالَ إِنْ خَاصَمُوكُمْ فَلَا تُخَاصِمُوهُمْ وَ قُولُوا هَكَذَا السُّنَّةُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man whose Wudu’ is valid but he shaves his head or cuts his nails; is it necessary for him to take Wudu’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, but he should wipe his head and nails with water.’ I then said, ‘They say that there is Wudu’ for it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If they argue with

لَيْسَ فِي الْقُبْلَةِ وَ لَا مَسِّ الْفَرْجِ وَ لَا الْمُبَاشَرَةِ وُضُوءٌ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not necessary to take Wudu’ for kissing, touching private parts or because of contact.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرُّعَافِ وَ الْحِجَامَةِ وَ كُلِّ دَمٍ سَائِلٍ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ فِي هَذَا وُضُوءٌ إِنَّمَا الْوُضُوءُ مِنْ طَرَفَيْكَ اللَّذَيْنِ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِهِمَا عَلَيْكَ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about bleeding of nostrils and cupping and all other kinds of bleeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not necessary to take Wudu’ for such things. It is necessary to take Wudu’ only when something comes out of the two outlets of the bottom that Allah has granted you.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ بِهِ عِلَّةٌ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى الِاضْطِجَاعِ وَ الْوُضُوءُ يَشْتَدُّ عَلَيْهِ وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ مُسْتَنِدٌ بِالْوَسَائِدِ فَرُبَّمَا أَغْفَى وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ قَالَ يَتَوَضَّأُ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ الْوُضُوءَ يَشْتَدُّ عَلَيْهِ لِحَالِ عِلَّتِهِ فَقَالَ إِذَا خَفِيَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّوْتُ فَقَدْ وَجَبَ الْوُضُوءُ عَلَيْهِ وَ قَالَ يُؤَخِّرُ الظُّهْرَ وَ يُصَلِّيهَا م

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who suffers from a certain illness because of which he is not able to lie down. It is difficult for him to take Wudu’ in a sitting position and leaning against something. He may also slumber when he is sitting. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must take Wudu’.’ I then said, ‘Takin

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْخَفْقَةِ وَ الْخَفْقَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ مَا أَدْرِي مَا الْخَفْقَةُ وَ الْخَفْقَتَانِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ- بَلِ الْإِنْسانُ عَلى‌ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ[2] إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ع كَانَ يَقُولُ مَنْ وَجَدَ طَعْمَ النَّوْمِ قَائِماً أَوْ قَاعِداً فَقَدْ وَجَبَ عَلَيْهِ الْوُضُوءُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about slumbering once or twice. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not know what slumbering once or twice is; however Allah says, “Man is well aware of his soul.” Ali (a.s.), would say, “If one feels the taste of sleep when standing or sitting, it then becomes necessary for him to take Wudu’

أُذُنَانِ وَ عَيْنَانِ تَنَامُ الْعَيْنَانِ وَ لَا تَنَامُ الْأُذُنَانِ وَ ذَلِكَ لَا يَنْقُضُ‌ الْوُضُوءَ فَإِذَا نَامَتِ الْعَيْنَانِ وَ الْأُذُنَانِ انْتَقَضَ الْوُضُوءُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘There are ears and eyes. Eyes may sleep but not yet the ears. This does not invalidate Wudu’. When both eyes and ears sleep, Wudu’ becomes invalid.’”

الرَّجُلُ يَقْرِضُ مِنْ شَعْرِهِ بِأَسْنَانِهِ أَ يَمْسَحُهُ بِالْمَاءِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ فِي الْحَدِيدِ[2].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who cuts some of his hairs with his teeth. Should he wipe it with water before Salah (prayer)? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful. This (wiping) applies only when it is with iron.’”

فِي الرَّجُلِ يَطَأُ عَلَى الْمَوْضِعِ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِنَظِيفٍ- ثُمَّ يَطَأُ بَعْدَهُ مَكَاناً نَظِيفاً قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ ذِرَاعاً أَوْ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one steps on a spot which is unclean, then steps on a clean spot, it is not harmful after walking a distance of fifteen yards or so.’”

كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذْ مَرَّ عَلَى عَذِرَةٍ يَابِسَةٍ فَوَطِئَ عَلَيْهَا فَأَصَابَتْ ثَوْبَهُ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَدْ وَطِئْتَ عَلَى عَذِرَةٍ فَأَصَابَتْ ثَوْبَكَ فَقَالَ أَ لَيْسَ هِيَ يَابِسَةً فَقُلْتُ بَلَى فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِنَّ الْأَرْضَ تُطَهِّرُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضاً.

“Once I was in the company of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), and on passing (stepping on) some dried up human feces, certain pieces came in contact with his clothes. نَزَلْنَا فِي مَكَانٍ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَ الْمَسْجِدِ زُقَاقٌ قَذِرٌ[3] فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ أَيْنَ نَزَلْتُمْ فَقُلْتُ نَزَلْنَا فِي دَارِ فُلَانٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بَيْنَكُمْ وَ بَيْنَ الْمَسْجِدِ زُقَاقاً قَذِراً أَوْ قُلْنَا لَهُ إِنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَ الْمَسْجِدِ زُقَاقاً قَذِراً فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ الْأَرْضُ تُطَهِّرُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضاً قُلْتُ وَ السِّرْقِينُ الرَّطْبُ أَطَأُ عَلَيْهِ فَ

“Once we found lodging in a place. Between this place and the Masjid there were dirty passageways. I visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) asked, ‘Where have you found lodging?’ I replied, ‘It is the house of so and so.’ He (the Imam) or we said, ‘Between that house and Masjid there are unclean passageways.’ He

لَا وَ لَكِنْ يَغْسِلُ مَا أَصَابَهُ. - وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى‌ إِذَا كَانَ جَافّاً فَلَا يَغْسِلُهُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of one who steps on feces or urine whether he must take Wudu’ again?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘No, but one must wash the polluted area clean.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْخِنْزِيرِ يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيَمُرُّ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ فَيَسِيلُ مِنْهُ الْمَاءُ أَمُرُّ عَلَيْهِ حَافِياً فَقَالَ أَ لَيْسَ وَرَاءَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ جَافٌّ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَلَا بَأْسَ إِنَّ الْأَرْضَ تُطَهِّرُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضاً.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the swine which comes out of water and passes on the road while water falls from it. What happens if I walk bare foot over such areas? He (the Imam) asked. ‘Are not there certain dry spots behind it?’ I replied, ‘Yes, there are such spots.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmf

إِنْ سَالَ مِنْ ذَكَرِكَ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنْ مَذْيٍ أَوْ وَدْيٍ‌[1] وَ أَنْتَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَلَا تَغْسِلْهُ وَ لَا تَقْطَعِ الصَّلَاةَ وَ لَا تَنْقُضْ لَهُ الْوُضُوءَ وَ إِنْ بَلَغَ عَقِيبَكَ فَإِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ النُّخَامَةِ وَ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ يَخْرُجُ مِنْكَ بَعْدَ الْوُضُوءِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْحَبَائِلِ أَوْ مِنَ الْبَوَاسِيرِ وَ لَيْسَ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ فَلَا تَغْسِلْهُ مِنْ ثَوْبِكَ إِلَّا أَنْ تَقْذَرَهُ.

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘If certain fluids (called al-Madhiy or Wadiy) other than semen and urine come out of your urethra during Salah (prayer), you do not have to wash them or discontinue your Salah (prayer); nor do they invalidate Wudu’ even if such fluids reach up to your backside. It is like nasal mucus

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْمَذْيِ فَقَالَ مَا هُوَ وَ النُّخَامَةُ إِلَّا سَوَاءٌ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about al-Madhiy. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is only like nasal mucus. They are very similar.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ع عَنِ الْمَذْيِ فَقَالَ لَا يَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ وَ لَا يُغْسَلُ مِنْهُ ثَوْبٌ وَ لَا جَسَدٌ إِنَّمَا هُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْمُخَاطِ وَ الْبُزَاقِ.

“I once asked one of the two Imams, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about al-Madhiy (certain secreted lubricant from urethra). He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not invalidate Wudu’ and it is not necessary to wash one’s clothes or body. It is only like nasal mucus and saliva.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الْمَذْيِ يَسِيلُ حَتَّى يُصِيبَ الْفَخِذَ فَقَالَ لَا يَقْطَعُ صَلَاتَهُ وَ لَا يَغْسِلُهُ مِنْ فَخِذِهِ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَخْرُجْ مِنْ مَخْرَجِ الْمَنِيِّ إِنَّمَا هُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ النُّخَامَةِ.

“I once asked Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about al-Madhiy which flows all the way to one’s thigh. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not necessary for one to discontinue one’s Salah (prayer) to wash it from one’s thigh. It does not come out of the passage from which semen comes. It is only like nasal mucus.

سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌ الْغُسْلُ مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ وَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ الْعِيدَيْنِ وَ حِينَ تُحْرِمُ وَ حِينَ تَدْخُلُ مَكَّةَ وَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ وَ يَوْمَ تَزُورُ الْبَيْتَ وَ حِينَ تَدْخُلُ الْكَعْبَةَ وَ فِي لَيْلَةِ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ وَ إِحْدَى وَ عِشْرِينَ وَ ثَلَاثٍ وَ عِشْرِينَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ مَنْ غَسَّلَ مَيِّتاً.

‘There is Ghusl (bath) because of sexual relations, there is Ghusl (bath) on Friday, on the two ‘Ids, at the time of assuming the state of ‘Ihram, there is Ghusl (bath) when entering Makkah and al-Madinah. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ غُسْلِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ وَاجِبٌ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ الْحَضَرِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ رُخِّصَ لِلنِّسَاءِ فِي السَّفَرِ لِقِلَّةِ الْمَاءِ[1] وَ قَالَ غُسْلُ الْجَنَابَةِ وَاجِبٌ وَ غُسْلُ الْحَائِضِ إِذَا طَهُرَتْ وَاجِبٌ وَ غُسْلُ الْمُسْتَحَاضَةِ وَاجِبٌ إِذَا احْتَشَتْ بِالْكُرْسُفِ فَجَازَ الدَّمُ الْكُرْسُفَ فَعَلَيْهَا الْغُسْلُ لِكُلِّ صَلَاتَيْنِ وَ لِلْفَجْرِ غُسْلٌ وَ إِنْ لَمْ

He (the Imam) said, ‘It is obligatory, regardless, if one is on a journey or at home except that women are exempt on a journey due to scarcity of water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Ghusl (bath) because of sexual relation is obligatory as well as because of Ha

إِذَا اغْتَسَلْتَ بَعْدَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ أَجْزَأَكَ غُسْلُكَ ذَلِكَ لِلْجَنَابَةِ وَ الْجُمُعَةِ[2] وَ عَرَفَةَ وَ النَّحْرِ وَ الْحَلْقِ وَ الذَّبْحِ وَ الزِّيَارَةِ وَ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَتْ عَلَيْكَ حُقُوقٌ أَجْزَأَهَا عَنْكَ غُسْلٌ وَاحِدٌ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَ كَذَلِكَ الْمَرْأَةُ يُجْزِئُهَا غُسْلٌ وَاحِدٌ لِجَنَابَتِهَا وَ إِحْرَامِهَا وَ جُمُعَتِهَا وَ غُسْلِهَا مِنْ حَيْضِهَا وَ عِيدِهَا.

“He (the Imam) has said, ‘If you take a Ghusl (bath) after dawn, it is sufficient for Ghusl (bath) because of sexual relations, for Friday, the day of ‘Arafah, (ninth of Dhul Hajjah), tenth of Dhul Hajjah, for shaving (during Hajj), offering sacrifice and visiting the House (al-Ka‘bah). إِذَا اغْتَسَلَ الْجُنُبُ بَعْدَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُ ذَلِكَ الْغُسْلُ مِنْ كُلِّ غُسْلٍ يَلْزَمُهُ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ.

‘If one, because of sexual relation, takes a Ghusl (bath) after dawn, it is sufficient for all the Ghusl (bath) that he is required to have on that day.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْغُسْلِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ وَاجِبٌ‌[3] عَلَى كُلِّ ذَكَرٍ وَ أُنْثَى عَبْدٍ أَوْ حُرٍّ.

He (the Imam) said, ‘It is obligatory on every male, female, slave or free.’”

سَأَلْتُ الرِّضَا ع عَنْ غُسْلِ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ وَاجِبٌ عَلَى كُلِّ ذَكَرٍ وَ أُنْثَى عَبْدٍ أَوْ حُرٍّ.

“I once asked al-Rida’ (a.s.), about Ghusl (bath) on Friday. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is obligatory on every male, female, slave or free.’”

الْغُسْلُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ وَ النِّسَاءِ فِي الْحَضَرِ وَ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ فِي السَّفَرِ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ فِي السَّفَرِ.[2] - وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى‌ أَنَّهُ رُخِّصَ لِلنِّسَاءِ فِي السَّفَرِ لِقِلَّةِ الْمَاءِ.

‘On Friday Ghusl (bath) is obligatory on men and women at home, and on men also on a journey; but it is not obligatory on women on a journey.’ In another Hadith it is said that women have exemption while on a journey, due to scarcity of water.”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلَ ع كَيْفَ صَارَ غُسْلُ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَاجِباً فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى أَتَمَّ صَلَاةَ الْفَرِيضَةِ بِصَلَاةِ النَّافِلَةِ وَ أَتَمَّ صِيَامَ الْفَرِيضَةِ بِصِيَامِ النَّافِلَةِ وَ أَتَمَّ وُضُوءَ الْفَرِيضَةِ[3] بِغُسْلِ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ مَا كَانَ فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ سَهْوٍ أَوْ تَقْصِيرٍ أَوْ نِسْيَانٍ أَوْ نُقْصَانٍ.

“I asked abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), how did Ghusl (bath) for Friday become obligatory? He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, has completed obligatory Salah (prayer) with optional ones. He has completed obligatory fasting with optional fast. He has completed obligatory Wudu’ with Ghusl (bath) on Frid

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُوَبِّخَ الرَّجُلَ يَقُولُ وَ اللَّهِ لَأَنْتَ أَعْجَزُ مِنَ التَّارِكِ الْغُسْلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَ إِنَّهُ لَا يَزَالُ فِي طُهْرٍ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الْأُخْرَى.

“When ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), wanted to reprimand a person he (the Imam) would say, ‘By Allah, your failure is greater than one who fails to take Ghusl (bath) on Friday. It certainly is Tahur (cleansing) until next Friday.’”

لَنَا يَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ اغْتَسِلَا الْيَوْمَ لِغَدٍ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَإِنَّ الْمَاءَ بِهَا غَداً قَلِيلٌ فَاغْتَسَلْنَا يَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ.

“We were with abu al-Hassan (a.s.), in the desert on our way to Baghdad. He (the Imam) said to us, ‘Today is Thursday, take Ghusl (bath) for Friday, tomorrow water will be scarce.’ We took Ghusl (bath) on Thursday for Friday.’”
