قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ قُتِلَ دُونَ مَظْلِمَتِهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَبَا مَرْيَمَ هَلْ تَدْرِي مَا دُونَ مَظْلِمَتِهِ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ الرَّجُلُ يُقْتَلُ دُونَ أَهْلِهِ وَ دُونَ مَالِهِ وَ أَشْبَاهِ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا مَرْيَمَ إِنَّ مِنَ الْفِقْهِ عِرْفَانَ الْحَقِ‌[1].

“The Messenger of Allah (saww) has said, ‘If one is murdered over his stolen property he is a martyr.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘O Abu Maryam, do you know what is ‘murdered over his stolen property’? I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep me in the service of your cause, it is when a man is murdered defending his family,

“If a man is on a journey and with him is his slave-girl. Certain people come and want to take his slave-girl from him. Should he try to stop them even if he fears for losing his life?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘Yes, he should try.’ I then asked, ‘Is it so also if a woman is with him?’ He (the Imam) replies, ‘Yes, it is.

He praised and glorified Allah; then said, ‘O people, I came to these people, called them and presented proof in support of my truthfulness. They then called me for a contest. سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ لَتَنْهُنَّ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ أَوْ لَيُسْتَعْمَلَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ شِرَارُكُمْ فَيَدْعُو خِيَارُكُمْ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُمْ.

‘You must ask (command) others to do good and prohibit them to commit evil, otherwise, the evil ones among you will be made your rulers and then the virtuous ones among you pray and their prayers will not be answered.’”

Thereafter he said, ‘People before were destroyed because when they committed sins the Rabbis and Monks did not stop them from committing such deeds. “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Asking people to do good and prohibiting them from committing evil are two creatures of the creatures of Allah. Those who support them, Allah gives them respect and Allah betrays those who betray these two creatures of Him . 55

“When my followers postpone asking others to do good and prohibit them from committing evil they, in so doing, allow affliction to befall upon them from Allah.’””

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص كَيْفَ بِكُمْ إِذَا فَسَدَتْ نِسَاؤُكُمْ وَ فَسَقَ شَبَابُكُمْ وَ لَمْ تَأْمُرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ لَمْ تَنْهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ وَ يَكُونُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ وَ شَرٌّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ كَيْفَ بِكُمْ إِذَا أَمَرْتُمْ بِالْمُنْكَرِ وَ نَهَيْتُمْ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ يَكُونُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَ شَرٌّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ كَيْفَ بِكُمْ إِذَا

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَيُبْغِضُ الْمُؤْمِنَ الضَّعِيفَ الَّذِي لَا دِينَ لَهُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ وَ مَا الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي لَا دِينَ لَهُ قَالَ الَّذِي لَا يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ.

حَسْبُ الْمُؤْمِنِ عِزّاً إِذَا رَأَى مُنْكَراً أَنْ يَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ إِنْكَارَهُ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is enough in terms of honor for a believing person who upon seeing an evil act committed informs (if he finds) Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, that he rejects and denounces such act.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّمَا يُؤْمَرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ يُنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ مُؤْمِنٌ فَيَتَّعِظُ أَوْ جَاهِلٌ فَيَتَعَلَّمُ وَ أَمَّا صَاحِبُ سَوْطٍ أَوْ سَيْفٍ فَلَا.

‘Verily, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil is incumbent upon a believer so he admonishes, or upon an ingorant so he learns from it; but as for the wielder of a whip or a sword, then no.’

قَالَ لِي يَا مُفَضَّلُ مَنْ تَعَرَّضَ لِسُلْطَانٍ جَائِرٍ فَأَصَابَتْهُ بَلِيَّةٌ لَمْ يُؤْجَرْ عَلَيْهَا وَ لَمْ يُرْزَقِ الصَّبْرَ عَلَيْهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘O Mufaddal, if one protests against an unjust ruler and he faces an affliction he will not receive any reward for such suffering nor is he granted any patience to bear in such suffering.’”

“When seeing a quarrelling group of people abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), would not pass by without always saying three times loudly, ‘You must maintain piety in the presence of Allah.’”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَ انْصَرَفَ فَمَشَيْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ كَالْمُطَرِّقِ لَهُ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ أَصْفَرُ عَمْرَكِيٌ‌[1] قَدْ أَدْخَلَ عُودَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ شِبْهَ السَّابِحِ‌[2] وَ رَبَطَهُ إِلَى فُسْطَاطِهِ وَ النَّاسُ وُقُوفٌ لَا يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْ يَمُرُّوا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَا هَذَا اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فَإِنَّ هَذَا الَّذِي تَصْنَعُهُ لَيْسَ لَكَ قَالَ فَقَا

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ- يا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَ أَهْلِيكُمْ ناراً[2] جَلَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَبْكِي وَ قَالَ أَنَا عَجَزْتُ عَنْ نَفْسِي كُلِّفْتُ أَهْلِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص حَسْبُكَ أَنْ تَأْمُرَهُمْ بِمَا تَأْمُرُ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ وَ تَنْهَاهُمْ عَمَّا تَنْهَى عَنْهُ نَفْسَكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that when the following verse of the Holy Quran was revealed: ‘O believers save yourselves and your family from a fire. . . (66:6) one man from the Muslims sat straight and began to weep, saying, ‘I have failed in saving myself and now I am commanded to save my family also.’ The Messeng

كَيْفَ أَقِيهِمْ قَالَ تَأْمُرُهُمْ بِمَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ وَ تَنْهَاهُمْ عَمَّا نَهَاهُمُ اللَّهُ فَإِنْ أَطَاعُوكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ وَقَيْتَهُمْ وَ إِنْ عَصَوْكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ قَضَيْتَ مَا عَلَيْكَ.

“About the words of Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, ‘. . . Save yourselves and your family from a fire. . . .’ (66:6) I asked him (the Imam), ‘How can I save them?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘You must order them to do what Allah has commanded to do and prohibit them from what Allah has prohibited them to do.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘ Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, has delegated all affairs of a believer to him but He has not delegated him to humiliate himself. Have you not heard the words of Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, “All honor belongs to Allah, His Messenger and the believers. .

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَوَّضَ إِلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ أُمُورَهُ كُلَّهَا وَ لَمْ يُفَوِّضْ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ أَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- وَ لِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَ لِرَسُولِهِ وَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ‌ فَالْمُؤْمِنُ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ عَزِيزاً وَ لَا يَكُونَ ذَلِيلًا يُعِزُّهُ اللَّهُ بِالْإِيمَانِ وَ الْإِسْلَامِ.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُؤْمِنِ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ قِيلَ لَهُ وَ كَيْفَ يُذِلُّ نَفْسَهُ قَالَ يَتَعَرَّضُ لِمَا لَا يُطِيقُ.

‘Believers must not humiliate themselves.’ It was asked, ‘How can one humiliate himself?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘This happens when he does things that are not bearable.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُؤْمِنِ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ قُلْتُ بِمَا يُذِلُّ نَفْسَهُ قَالَ يَدْخُلُ فِيمَا يَتَعَذَّرُ مِنْهُ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A believer must not humiliate himself.’ I then asked, ‘In what way can he humiliate himself?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘He can do so by involving himself in things that he cannot do.’”
