قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْمُغِيرَةِ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الْقَدِيدِ الَّتِي لَمْ تَمَسَّهُ النَّارُ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that companions of al-Mughirah prohibit eating of meat which is dried up in the sun and fire has not touched it. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to eat it.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ اللَّحْمَ يُقَدَّدُ وَ يُذَرُّ عَلَيْهِ الْمِلْحُ وَ يُجَفَّفُ فِي الظِّلِّ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِ لِأَنَّ الْمِلْحَ قَدْ غَيَّرَهُ‌[2].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if meat can be dried up by salting and leaving in the shade. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful to eat it because salt has changed it.’”

أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ‌ الْقَدِيدُ لَحْمُ سَوْءٍ لِأَنَّهُ يَسْتَرْخِي فِي الْمَعِدَةِ وَ يُهَيِّجُ كُلَّ دَاءٍ وَ لَا يَنْفَعُ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ بَلْ يَضُرُّهُ.

‘Al-Qadid (dried up meat) is a bad kind of meat because it softens in the stomach and induces every kind of illness and it does not benefit anything, instead it harms.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ شَيْئَانِ صَالِحَانِ لَمْ يَدْخُلَا جَوْفَ وَاحِدٍ قَطُّ فَاسِداً إِلَّا أَصْلَحَاهُ وَ شَيْئَانِ فَاسِدَانِ لَمْ يَدْخُلَا جَوْفاً قَطُّ صَالِحاً إِلَّا أَفْسَدَاهُ فَالصَّالِحَانِ الرُّمَّانُ وَ الْمَاءُ الْفَاتِرُ وَ الْفَاسِدَانِ الْجُبُنُّ وَ الْقَدِيدُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘There are two good things that never enter a bad stomach which they do not repair, and there are two bad things which never enter a good stomach which they do not damage. The two good things are pomegranate and warm water, and the two bad things are cheese and al-Qadid (dried up meat)

ثَلَاثَةٌ يَهْدِمْنَ الْبَدَنَ وَ رُبَّمَا قَتَلْنَ أَكْلُ الْقَدِيدِ الْغَابِ‌[3] وَ دُخُولُ الْحَمَّامِ عَلَى الْبِطْنَةِ وَ نِكَاحُ الْعَجَائِزِ. - قَالَ وَ زَادَ فِيهِ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ النَّهَاوَنْدِيُ‌ وَ غِشْيَانُ النِّسَاءِ عَلَى الِامْتِلَاءِ.

6. He has said that:Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Three things destroy the body; perhaps kill a person. One is eating of rotten meat, going to the bath with a full stomach and going to bed with old women. He has said that abu Ishaq al-Nahawandiy has added, going to bed with women when one’s stomach is full.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ ثَلَاثٌ لَا يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ هُنَّ يُسْمِنَّ وَ ثَلَاثٌ يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ هُنَّ يَهْزِلْنَ وَ اثْنَانِ يَنْفَعَانِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ لَا يَضُرَّانِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ اثْنَانِ يَضُرَّانِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ وَ لَا يَنْفَعَانِ مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَأَمَّا اللَّوَاتِي لَا يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ يُسْمِنَّ اسْتِشْعَارُ الْكَتَّانِ وَ الطِّيبُ وَ النُّورَةُ وَ أَمَّا اللَّوَاتِي يُؤْكَلْنَ وَ يَهْزِلْنَ فَهُوَ اللّ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Use of three things forms fat in one’s body, another three things cause weight loss. Two things benefit harmlessly and two things do all kinds of harm without any benefit. The three that can cause fatness are use of linen, perfume and lime. قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لِمَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُحِبُّ الذِّرَاعَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ حُبِّهِ لِسَائِرِ أَعْضَاءِ الشَّاةِ فَقَالَ ع لِأَنَّ آدَمَ ع قَرَّبَ قُرْبَاناً عَنِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ فَسَمَّى لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ عُضْواً عُضْواً وَ سَمَّى لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص الذِّرَاعَ فَمِنْ ثَمَّ كَانَ ص يُحِبُّهَا وَ يَشْتَهِيهَا وَ يُفَضِّلُهَا.

سَمَّتِ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ النَّبِيَّ ص فِي ذِرَاعٍ وَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ص يُحِبُّ الذِّرَاعَ وَ الْكَتِفَ وَ يَكْرَهُ الْوَرِكَ لِقُرْبِهَا مِنَ الْمَبَالِ.

‘The Jewish woman poisoned the Holy Prophet with shoulder meat and the Holy Prophet, liked it greatly but he disliked meat from the hip area because it is close to the urinating part.’”

أَرْسَلْتُ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع بِقُدَيْرَةٍ فِيهَا نَارْبَاجٌ فَأَكَلَ مِنْهَا وَ قَالَ احْبِسُوا بَقِيَّتَهَا عَلَيَّ فَأُتِيَ بِهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثاً ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْغُلَامَ صَبَّ فِيهَا مَاءً فَأَتَاهُ بِهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ وَيْحَكَ أَفْسَدْتَهَا عَلَيَّ.

“I once sent for abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), a cooking pot with al-Nar Bajah in it (broth made of pomegranate). He (the Imam) ate from it and told to save the rest for him to have it twice or three times. The slave then added water in it and brought it to him. He (the Imam) said, ‘Fie upon you. You have destroyed it.’”

أَكَلْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَأُتِيَ بِلَوْنٍ فَقَالَ كُلْ مِنْ هَذَا فَأَمَّا أَنَا فَمَا شَيْ‌ءٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الثَّرِيدِ وَ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّ الْإِسْفَانَاجَاتِ حُرِّمَتْ‌[2].

“I once ate food with abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), and the food was of one kind. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can have this food but to me any other food is not as desirable as Tharid. قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِأُمَّتِي فِي الثَّرْدِ وَ الثَّرِيدِ قَالَ جَعْفَرٌ الثَّرْدُ مَا صَغُرَ وَ الثَّرِيدُ مَا كَبُرَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘O Lord, bless for my followers al-Thard and al-Tharid.’ Ja‘far has said, that al-Thard is whatever is small and al-Tharid is whatever is large.”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَدَعَا بِالْمَائِدَةِ فَأُتِيَ بِثَرِيدٍ وَ لَحْمٍ وَ دَعَا بِزَيْتٍ وَ صَبَّهُ عَلَى اللَّحْمِ فَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ.

“Once I was with ‘Abd Allah ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and he (the Imam) asked for table-spread with food. Tharid and meat was brought and he (the Imam) asked for oil which he (the Imam) poured on the meat and I ate with him (the Imam).”’

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ شِوَاءٌ فَقَالَ لِي ادْنُ فَكُلْ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هَذَا لِي ضَارٌّ فَقَالَ لِي ادْنُ أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ لَا يَضُرُّكَ مَعَهُنَّ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِمَّا تَخَافُ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَيْرِ الْأَسْمَاءِ مِلْ‌ءَ الْأَرْضِ وَ السَّمَاءِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْ‌ءٌ وَ لَا دَاءٌ تَغَدَّ مَعَنَا.

‘In the name of Allah, the best of names, to the fill of the earth and sky, the Beneficent, the Merciful, the one with whose name not even one thing and illness harms.’ Now you can have lunch with us.’”

اشْتَكَيْتُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ شَكَاةً ضَعُفْتُ مَعَهَا فَأَتَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع فَقَالَ لِي أَرَاكَ ضَعِيفاً قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لِي كُلِ الْكَبَابَ فَأَكَلْتُهُ فَبَرَأْتُ.

“I once in al-Madinah became very weak and visited abu al-Hassan (a.s.). He (the Imam) said, ‘I can see you are very weak.’ I replied, ‘Yes, I feel weak.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Eat kabab .’ I then ate kabab and I was cured.’”

قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ يَعْنِي الْأَوَّلَ ع مَا لِي أَرَاكَ مُصْفَرّاً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ وَعْكٌ‌[1] أَصَابَنِي فَقَالَ لِي كُلِ اللَّحْمَ فَأَكَلْتُهُ ثُمَّ رَآنِي بَعْدَ جُمْعَةٍ وَ أَنَا عَلَى حَالِي مُصْفَرّاً فَقَالَ لِي أَ لَمْ آمُرْكَ بِأَكْلِ اللَّحْمِ قُلْتُ مَا أَكَلْتُ غَيْرَهُ مُنْذُ أَمَرْتَنِي فَقَالَ وَ كَيْفَ تَأْكُلُهُ قُلْتُ طَبِيخاً فَقَالَ لَا كُلْهُ كَبَاباً فَأَكَلْتُهُ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ فَدَ

“Once abu al-Hassan, al- Awwal asked me, ‘Why do you look pale?’ I replied, ‘I suffer from a certain pain.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Eat meat.’ I ate meat and the next Friday he (the Imam) saw me as pale as before and said, ‘Did I not tell you to eat meat?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I have not eaten anything other than meat from th

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ص‌ لَوْ أَغْنَى عَنِ الْمَوْتِ شَيْ‌ءٌ لَأَغْنَتِ التَّلْبِينَةُ فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ مَا التَّلْبِينَةُ قَالَ الْحَسْوُ بِاللَّبَنِ الْحَسْوُ بِاللَّبَنِ وَ كَرَّرَهَا ثَلَاثاً. - وَ رَوَاهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنِ الْأَصَمِّ عَنْ مِسْمَعِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ.

بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ الْمَاضِي ع يَوْماً فَأَكَلْتُ عِنْدَهُ وَ أَكْثَرَ مِنَ الْحَلْوَاءِ فَقُلْتُ مَا أَكْثَرَ هَذِهِ الْحَلْوَاءَ فَقَالَ ع إِنَّا وَ شِيعَتَنَا خُلِقْنَا مِنَ الْحَلَاوَةِ فَنَحْنُ نُحِبُّ الْحَلْوَاءَ.

“Once al-Madiy (the previous) abu al-Hassan ‘Alayhi al-Salam, called me for food and I ate food with him. He (the Imam) ate quite a bit of al-Halwa’ (sweet) and I said, ‘This is quite a bit of al-HalwaY He (the Imam) said, ‘I and our followers are created from sweetness; thus we like sweet.’”

أَكَلْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَوْماً فَأُتِيَ بِدَجَاجَةٍ مَحْشُوَّةٍ خَبِيصاً- فَفَكَكْنَاهَا وَ أَكَلْنَاهَا. - ابْنُ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ: أَكَلْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مِثْلَ الْخَبَرِ الْأَوَّلِ.

"I ate with Abu Abdullah al-Sadiq (as) one day when a chicken stuffed with khabees (a type of sweet dish) was brought to him. We took it apart and ate it." Ibn Fadhal also narrated from Yunus ibn Yaqub, from Abd al-A'la, who said: "I ate with Abu Abdullah al-Sadiq (as) similarly to the first report."

كُنَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْنَا اصْنَعُوا لَنَا فَالُوذَجَ وَ أَقِلُّوا فَأَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِ فِي قَصْعَةٍ صَغِيرَةٍ.

“We were in al-Madinah and abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), sent a message to us to make for him (the Imam) Faludah (a kind of sweet) of a little quantity . We then sent it to him (the Imam) in a small bowl.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ أَقِرُّوا الْحَارَّ حَتَّى يَبْرُدَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قُرِّبَ إِلَيْهِ طَعَامٌ حَارٌّ فَقَالَ أَقِرُّوهُ حَتَّى يَبْرُدَ- مَا كَانَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لِيُطْعِمَنَا النَّارَ وَ الْبَرَكَةُ فِي الْبَارِدِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ’Leave the hot (food) until it becomes cold. حَضَرْتُ عَشَاءَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي الصَّيْفِ فَأُتِيَ بِخِوَانٍ عَلَيْهِ خُبْزٌ وَ أُتِيَ بِقَصْعَةِ ثَرِيدٍ وَ لَحْمٍ فَقَالَ هَلُمَّ إِلَيَّ هَذَا الطَّعَامَ فَدَنَوْتُ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِيهِ وَ رَفَعَهَا وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ أَسْتَجِيرُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ هَذَا مَا لَا نَصْبِرُ عَلَيْهِ فَكَيْفَ النَّارُ هَذَا مَا لَا نَقْوَى عَلَيْهِ فَكَيْفَ
