جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَوْصِنِي بِوَجْهٍ مِنْ وُجُوهِ الْبِرِّ أَنْجُو بِهِ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع أَيُّهَا السَّائِلُ اسْتَمِعْ ثُمَّ اسْتَفْهِمْ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقِنْ ثُمَّ اسْتَعْمِلْ‌[1] وَ اعْلَمْ أَنَّ النَّاسَ ثَلَاثَةٌ زَاهِدٌ وَ صَابِرٌ وَ رَاغِبٌ فَأَمَّا الزَّاهِدُ فَقَدْ خَرَجَتِ الْأَحْزَانُ وَ الْأَفْرَاحُ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ فَلَا يَفْرَحُ بِشَيْ‌ء

“Once I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘If you can remain unknown, then do so. There will be nothing wrong if people will not praise you. قِيلَ لِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع عِظْنَا وَ أَوْجِزْ فَقَالَ الدُّنْيَا حَلَالُهَا حِسَابٌ وَ حَرَامُهَا عِقَابٌ وَ أَنَّى لَكُمْ بِالرَّوْحِ وَ لَمَّا تَأَسَّوْا بِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكُمْ‌[3] تَطْلُبُونَ مَا يُطْغِيكُمْ وَ لَا تَرْضَوْنَ مَا يَكْفِيكُمْ.[4]

“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, does not accept the prayer from a thoughtless heart. Ali (a.s.) would say, ‘Whenever any of you may pray for a dead person, he must not do it frivolously but must strive to be serious in his prayer.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِنَّ فِي كِتَابِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص إِنَّ الْمِدْحَةَ قَبْلَ الْمَسْأَلَةِ فَإِذَا دَعَوْتَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَمَجِّدْهُ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ أُمَجِّدُهُ قَالَ تَقُولُ- يَا مَنْ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيَ‌ مِنْ حَبْلِ‌ الْوَرِيدِ يَا فَعَّالًا لِما يُرِيدُ* يَا مَنْ‌ يَحُولُ‌ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَ قَلْبِهِ‌ يَا مَنْ هُوَ بِالْمَنْظَرِ الْأَعْلَى يَا مَنْ هُوَ لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْ‌ءٌ.

The hypocrites speak of Allah in public but they do not speak of Him in secret to which Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said, ‘They stand up in prayer lazily just to show that they pray, but, in truth they

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ مَنْ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ*- عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ لَمْ يَجِدْ وَجَعَ الْأُذُنَيْنِ وَ الْأَضْرَاسِ.

“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever upon sneezing says, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, in all conditions, will not suffer from pain in his ears and teeth.”’”

دَخَلَ رَجُلَانِ عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَأَلْقَى لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا وِسَادَةً فَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهَا أَحَدُهُمَا وَ أَبَى الْآخَرُ فَقَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع اقْعُدْ عَلَيْهَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَأْبَى الْكَرَامَةَ إِلَّا حِمَارٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا أَتَاكُمْ كَرِيمُ قَوْمٍ فَأَكْرِمُوهُ.

“Once two men came to Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) he prepared one seat for each one. One of them sat on the seat but the other refused. Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) said to him, ‘Take your seat; no one refuses to appreciate being honored except a donkey.’ The Imam then said, ‘The Messenger

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ سُوقُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَمَسْجِدِهِمْ فَمَنْ سَبَقَ إِلَى مَكَانٍ فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهِ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ قَالَ وَ كَانَ لَا يَأْخُذُ عَلَى بُيُوتِ السُّوقِ كِرَاءً.

“Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) would say, ‘The market place of the Muslims is like their Mosque, the one who first takes a place stays there until night. ’ The narrator has said that he (the Imam) would not charge any rent for the shops.’”
