سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الْقُطْنِ وَ الزَّعْفَرَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا زَكَاةٌ قَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about cotton and saffron if there is Zakat on it. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Zakat is not due on it.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الْقُطْنِ وَ الزَّعْفَرَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا زَكَاةٌ قَالَ لَا.

فِي الْبُسْتَانِ تَكُونُ فِيهِ مِنَ الثِّمَارِ مَا لَوْ بِيعَ كَانَ مَالًا هَلْ فِيهِ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ لَا.
“I asked abu Ja‘far and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a garden which has fruits that if sold becomes wealth and if there is Zakat on it. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Zakat is not due on it.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الزَّكَاةِ فِي الزَّبِيبِ وَ التَّمْرِ فَقَالَ فِي كُلِّ خَمْسَةِ أَوْسَاقٍ وَسْقٌ وَ الْوَسْقُ سِتُّونَ صَاعاً وَ الزَّكَاةُ فِيهِمَا سَوَاءٌ فَأَمَّا الطَّعَامُ فَالْعُشُرُ فِيمَا سَقَتِ السَّمَاءُ وَ أَمَّا مَا سُقِيَ بِالْغَرْبِ[3] وَ الدَّوَالِي فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ نِصْفُ الْعُشْرِ.
“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about Zakat on raisins and dates. He (the Imam) said, ‘On every five awsaq (a certain measurement) there is one wasq. One wasq is sixty Sa‘. The amount of Zakat on both items is of the same amount. Of food items what is watered by rain from the sky Zakat is one out of ten, but if it
ذَكَرْنَا لَهُ الْكُوفَةَ وَ مَا وُضِعَ عَلَيْهَا مِنَ الْخَرَاجِ وَ مَا سَارَ فِيهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ فَقَالَ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ طَوْعاً تُرِكَتْ أَرْضُهُ فِي يَدِهِ وَ أُخِذَ مِنْهُ الْعُشْرُ مِمَّا سَقَتِ السَّمَاءُ وَ الْأَنْهَارُ وَ نِصْفُ الْعُشْرِ مِمَّا كَانَ بِالرِّشَاءِ[1] فِيمَا عَمَرُوهُ مِنْهَا وَ مَا لَمْ يَعْمُرُوهُ مِنْهَا أَخَذَهُ الْإِمَامُ فَقَبَّلَهُ مِمَّنْ يَعْمُرُهُ وَ كَانَ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ وَ عَلَى
“Once we spoke to him (the Imam) about al-Kufah and of taxes levied and where his family has moved. He (the Imam) said, ‘Those who willingly accepted Islam their land was left in their hands. One out of ten is received from them for what is watered from the sky and canals. There is one out of twenty for what is watered
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِي الصَّدَقَةِ فِيمَا سَقَتِ السَّمَاءُ وَ الْأَنْهَارُ إِذَا كَانَ سَيْحاً أَوْ كَانَ بَعْلًا الْعُشْرُ وَ مَا سَقَتِ السَّوَانِي[3] وَ الدَّوَالِي أَوْ سُقِيَ بِالْغَرْبِ فَنِصْفُ الْعُشْرِ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Zakat on what is watered by canals or rain from the sky, is one out of ten and on what is watered by means of scoops and buckets and what trickles thereby is one out of twenty.’”
أَنَّهُمَا قَالا لَهُ هَذِهِ الْأَرْضُ الَّتِي يُزَارِعُ أَهْلُهَا مَا تَرَى فِيهَا فَقَالَ كُلُّ أَرْضٍ دَفَعَهَا إِلَيْكَ السُّلْطَانُ فَمَا حَرَثْتَهُ فِيهَا فَعَلَيْكَ فِيمَا أَخْرَجَ اللَّهُ مِنْهَا الَّذِي قَاطَعَكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى جَمِيعِ مَا أَخْرَجَ اللَّهُ مِنْهَا الْعُشْرُ إِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ الْعُشْرُ فِيمَا يَحْصُلُ فِي يَدِكَ بَعْدَ مُقَاسَمَتِهِ لَكَ.
“The two of them asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the land cultivated by the people. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you contract such land from government then out of what Allah makes it grow, comes your share according to the terms of the contract. One out of ten is not payable from its gross harvest. One out of ten is due on
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنْ أَقَلِّ مَا يَجِبُ فِيهِ الزَّكَاةُ مِنَ الْبُرِّ وَ الشَّعِيرِ وَ التَّمْرِ وَ الزَّبِيبِ فَقَالَ خَمْسَةُ أَوْسَاقٍ بِوَسْقِ النَّبِيِّ ص فَقُلْتُ كَمِ الْوَسْقُ قَالَ سِتُّونَ صَاعاً قُلْتُ فَهَلْ عَلَى الْعِنَبِ زَكَاةٌ أَوْ إِنَّمَا تَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا صَيَّرَهُ زَبِيباً قَالَ نَعَمْ إِذَا خَرَصَهُ أَخْرَجَ زَكَاتَهُ.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the minimum Zakat due on wheat, barley, dates and raisins. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is one wasaq out of five Awsaq of wasq of the Holy prophet.’ I then asked, ‘How much is wasaq?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is sixty Sa‘.’ I then asked, ‘Is there Zakat on grapes or that there is Zak
فِيمَا سَقَتِ السَّمَاءُ وَ الْأَنْهَارُ أَوْ كَانَ بَعْلًا[2] الْعُشْرُ وَ أَمَّا مَا سَقَتِ السَّوَانِي وَ الدَّوَالِي فَنِصْفُ العُشْرِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَالْأَرْضُ تَكُونُ عِنْدَنَا تُسْقَى بِالدَّوَالِي ثُمَّ يَزِيدُ الْمَاءُ فَتُسْقَى سَيْحاً فَقَالَ وَ إِنَّ ذَا لَيَكُونُ عِنْدَكُمْ كَذَلِكَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ النِّصْفُ وَ النِّصْفُ نِصْفٌ بِنِصْفِ الْعُشْرِ وَ نِصْفٌ بِالْعُشْرِ فَقُلْتُ الْأَرْضُ تُسْقَى بِالد
‘Zakat is one out of ten on what is watered from canals or rain from the sky and it is one out of twenty on what is watered by means of scoops and buckets. I then said that we have a certain piece of land, which is watered, by means of buckets, then water increases and it then is watered from canals. He (the Imam) aske
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ التَّمْرِ وَ الزَّبِيبِ مَا أَقَلُّ مَا تَجِبُ فِيهِ الزَّكَاةُ فَقَالَ خَمْسَةُ أَوْسَاقٍ وَ يُتْرَكُ مِعَافَأْرَةٍ وَ أُمُّ جُعْرُورٍ لَا يُزَكَّيَانِ وَ إِنْ كَثُرَا وَ يُتْرَكُ لِلْحَارِسِ الْعَذْقُ وَ الْعَذْقَانِ وَ الْحَارِسُ يَكُونُ فِي النَّخْلِ يَنْظُرُهُ فَيُتْرَكُ ذَلِكَ لِعِيَالِهِ[4].
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about dates and raisins and the minimum amount on which Zakat is due. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is five Awsaq. Zakat is not due on Mi‘afarah
أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ كَانَ لَهُ حَرْثٌ أَوْ تَمْرَةٌ فَصَدَّقَهَا فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ شَيْءٌ وَ إِنْ حَالَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ عِنْدَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُحَوِّلَهُ مَالًا فَإِنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَحَالَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ عِنْدَهُ فَعَلَيْهِ أَنْ يُزَكِّيَهُ وَ إِلَّا فَلَا شَيْءَ عَلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ ثَبَتَ ذَلِكَ أَلْفَ عَامٍ إِذَا كَانَ بِعَيْنِهِ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ صَدَقَةُ الْعُشْرِ فَإِذَا أَدَّاهَا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If one has plantations and dates for which charity (Zakat) is paid, thereafter no other Zakat is due on it. Zakat is not due even if it remains in one’s possession for a whole year unless one changes it into another kind of wealth. After the change it remains in one’s possession for a
قَالَ: فِي كُلِّ مِائَتَيْ دِرْهَمٍ خَمْسَةُ دَرَاهِمَ مِنَ الْفِضَّةِ وَ إِنْ نَقَصَ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ زَكَاةٌ وَ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ مِنْ كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ دِينَاراً نِصْفُ دِينَارٍ وَ إِنْ نَقَصَ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ شَيْءٌ.
“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘On every two hundred dirham of silver Zakat is five dirham, and on less than two hundred Zakat is not due. On every twenty Dinar of gold half dinar is Zakat and on less than this Zakat is not due.’”
سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ صَائِغٌ[2] أَعْمَلُ بِيَدِي وَ إِنَّهُ يَجْتَمِعُ عِنْدِيَ الْخَمْسَةُ وَ الْعَشَرَةُ فَفِيهَا زَكَاةٌ فَقَالَ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ مِائَتَا دِرْهَمٍ فَحَالَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَوْلُ فَإِنَّ عَلَيْهَا الزَّكَاةَ.
‘I am a jeweler and I make jewelry with my own hands. Five or ten accumulates with me. Is Zakat due on it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If two hundred accumulates and it remains in your possession for one year then Zakat is due.”’
قَالا لَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ الْعِشْرِينَ مِثْقَالًا مِنَ الذَّهَبِ شَيْءٌ فَإِذَا كَمَلَتْ عِشْرِينَ مِثْقَالًا فَفِيهَا نِصْفُ مِثْقَالٍ إِلَى أَرْبَعَةٍ وَ عِشْرِينَ فَإِذَا كَمَلَتْ أَرْبَعَةً وَ عِشْرِينَ فَفِيهَا ثَلَاثَةُ أَخْمَاسِ دِينَارٍ إِلَى ثَمَانِيَةٍ وَ عِشْرِينَ فَعَلَى هَذَا الْحِسَابِ كُلَّمَا زَادَ أَرْبَعَةً
‘Zakat is not due on what is less than twenty Mithqal of gold. If it is a complete twenty Mithqal, half Mithqal is Zakat thereof. Once it becomes complete twenty-four, then three-fifth of a dinar is Zakat thereof up until it is twenty-eight. Thereafter on the increase of every four, three-fifth of a dinar is Zakat ther
إِذَا جَازَتِ الزَّكَاةُ الْعِشْرِينَ دِينَاراً فَفِي كُلِّ أَرْبَعَةِ دَنَانِيرَ عُشْرُ دِينَارٍ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once the amount of gold becomes more than twenty dinar then on every four dinar Zakat is one out of ten dinar.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الذَّهَبِ كَمْ فِيهِ مِنَ الزَّكَاةِ فَقَالَ إِذَا بَلَغَ قِيمَتُهُ مِائَتَيْ دِرْهَمٍ فَعَلَيْهِ[1] الزَّكَاةُ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about gold and the amount of its Zakat. He (the Imam) said, ‘Once its value amounts up to two hundred dirham then Zakat is payable.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع فِي كَمْ وَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الزَّكَاةَ فَقَالَ فِي كُلِّ مِائَتَيْ دِرْهَمٍ خَمْسَةَ دَرَاهِمَ فَإِنْ نَقَصَتْ فَلَا زَكَاةَ فِيهَا وَ فِي الذَّهَبِ فَفِي كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ دِينَاراً نِصْفُ دِينَارٍ فَإِنْ نَقَصَتْ فَلَا زَكَاةَ فِيهَا.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), ‘How much Zakat, the Messenger of Allah has levied? He (the Imam) said, ‘It is five dirham on every two hundred and if it is less, then Zakat is not due. On every twenty dinar of gold Zakat is half dinar and Zakat is not due on less than twenty dinar.’”
سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الذَّهَبِ وَ الْفِضَّةِ مَا أَقَلُّ مَا يَكُونُ فِيهِ الزَّكَاةُ قَالَ مِائَتَا دِرْهَمٍ وَ عِدْلُهَا مِنَ الذَّهَبِ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ النَّيِّفِ وَ الْخَمْسَةِ وَ الْعَشَرَةِ قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ أَرْبَعِينَ فَيُعْطَى مِنْ كُلِّ أَرْبَعِينَ دِرْهَماً دِرْهَمٌ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was once asked about the minimum Zakat on gold and silver. He (the Imam) said, ‘The minimum is two hundred and the equivalent of it of gold.’ I then asked about fifteen and change. He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due on it until it becomes forty, then for every forty Zakat is one dirham.’”
قُلْتُ لَهُ تِسْعُونَ وَ مِائَةُ دِرْهَمٍ وَ تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ دِينَاراً أَ عَلَيْهَا فِي الزَّكَاةِ شَيْءٌ فَقَالَ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ الذَّهَبُ وَ الْفِضَّةُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ مِائَتَيْ دِرْهَمٍ فَفِيهَا الزَّكَاةُ لِأَنَّ عَيْنَ الْمَالِ الدَّرَاهِمُ وَ كُلُّ مَا خَلَا الدَّرَاهِمَ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ مَتَاعٍ فَهُوَ عَرْضٌ مَرْدُودٌ ذَلِكَ إِلَى الدَّرَاهِمِ فِي الزَّكَاةِ وَ الدِّيَاتِ.
“I once said to abu Ibrahim (a.s.), ‘There is one hundred ninety dirham and nineteen dinar. Is there Zakat on it? He (the Imam) said, ‘If gold and silver together amount to two hundred dirham, then there is Zakat payable, because dirham represents the value of wealth and items other than dirham like gold and goods are
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي كُنْتُ فِي قَرْيَةٍ مِنْ قُرَى خُرَاسَانَ يُقَالُ لَهَا بُخَارَى فَرَأَيْتُ فِيهَا دَرَاهِمَ تُعْمَلُ ثُلُثٌ فِضَّةٌ وَ ثُلُثٌ مِسٌّ وَ ثُلُثٌ رَصَاصٌ وَ كَانَتْ تَجُوزُ عِنْدَهُمْ وَ كُنْتُ أَعْمَلُهَا وَ أُنْفِقُهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِكَ إِذَا كَانَتْ تَجُوزُ عِنْدَهُمْ فَقُلْتُ أَ رَأَيْتَ إِنْ حَالَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَوْلُ وَ هِيَ عِنْدِي وَ فِ
“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that I have been in a town in Khurasan called Bukhara’. I saw dirhams used there had one-third of silver, one-third of copper and one-third of lead and it was lawful among them. I would use and spend them. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘There is no offence in it if it is lawful amo
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْحُلِيِّ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ قَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about Zakat and jewelry. He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due on jewelries.”’
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْحُلِيِّ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ قَالَ لَا.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about Zakat and jewelry. He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due on jewelries.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْحُلِيِّ أَ يُزَكَّى فَقَالَ إِذاً لَا يَبْقَى مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ.
‘If so nothing will remain thereof.’”
سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ سَأَلَهُ بَعْضُهُمْ عَنِ الْحُلِيِّ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَوْ بَلَغَ مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ.
‘Zakat is not due on jewelries even if it becomes a hundred thousand.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنِ الْمَالِ الَّذِي لَا يُعْمَلُ بِهِ وَ لَا يُقَلَّبُ[1] قَالَ يَلْزَمُهُ الزَّكَاةُ فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا أَنْ يُسْبَكَ.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about goods which are not used or moved. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is Zakat on it every year until it is used.”
زَكَاةُ الْحُلِيِّ عَارِيَتُهُ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Zakat of jewelries is allowing others to borrow it.’”
قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّ أَخِي يُوسُفَ وُلِّيَ لِهَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمِ أَعْمَالًا أَصَابَ فِيهَا أَمْوَالًا كَثِيرَةً وَ إِنَّهُ جَعَلَ تِلْكَ الْأَمْوَالَ حُلِيّاً أَرَادَ أَنْ يَفِرَّ بِهَا مِنَ الزَّكَاةِ أَ عَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْحُلِيِّ زَكَاةٌ وَ مَا أَدْخَلَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ مِنَ النُّقْصَانِ فِي وَضْعِهِ وَ مَنْعِهِ نَفْسَهُ فَضْلَهُ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا يَخَافُ مِنَ الزَّكَاةِ.
“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that my brother, Yusuf accepts employment from these people from which he has earned great amounts of wealth and has turned them into jewelries to avoid Zakat. Is there Zakat on it? He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due on jewelries; however, the loss that he has caused to himself
قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنَّهُ يَجْتَمِعُ عِنْدِي الشَّيْءُ فَيَبْقَى نَحْواً مِنْ سَنَةٍ أَ نُزَكِّيهِ قَالَ لَا كُلُّ مَا لَمْ يَحُلْ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَكَ الْحَوْلُ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ وَ كُلُّ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ رِكَازاً فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ فِيهِ شَيْءٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ مَا الرِّكَازُ قَالَ الصَّامِتُ الْمَنْقُوشُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ ذَلِكَ فَاسْبِكْهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي سَبَائِكِ الذَّهَبِ وَ نِقَارِ الْفِضَّة
“I once said to abu Ibrahim (a.s.), certain things accumulate with me and remain for about a year. Is there Zakat on it? He (the Imam) said, ‘No, Zakat is not due on it. Use whatever is with you until one is passed, Zakat is not due on it and whatever is not rika’z you do not owe anything therefor.’ I then asked, ‘What
لَيْسَ فِي التِّبْرِ زَكَاةٌ إِنَّمَا هِيَ عَلَى الدَّنَانِيرِ وَ الدَّرَاهِمِ.
“Zakat is not due on gold. Zakat becomes due only on dinars and dirhams.”
لَيْسَ فِي الْجَوْهَرِ وَ أَشْبَاهِهِ زَكَاةٌ وَ إِنْ كَثُرَ.
“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Zakat is not due on gems even if it becomes a large amount.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا تَقُولُ فِي رَجُلٍ كَانَ لَهُ مَالٌ فَانْطَلَقَ بِهِ فَدَفَنَهُ فِي مَوْضِعٍ فَلَمَّا حَالَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ ذَهَبَ لِيُخْرِجَهُ مِنْ مَوْضِعِهِ فَاحْتَفَرَ الْمَوْضِعَ الَّذِي ظَنَّ أَنَّ الْمَالَ فِيهِ مَدْفُونٌ فَلَمْ يُصِبْهُ فَمَكَثَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ سِنِينَ ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ احْتَفَرَ الْمَوْضِعَ الَّذِي مِنْ جَوَانِبِهِ كُلِّهِ فَوَقَعَ عَلَى الْمَالِ بِعَيْنِهِ كَيْفَ يُزَكِّي
“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man who buries a certain amount of his wealth in a certain place and after one year goes to find out. He searches and digs around in the area but fails to find it. He then after three years goes to search again and finds the amount of wealth that was lost. He (the Imam) said, ‘H
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَغِيبُ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ خَمْسَ سِنِينَ ثُمَّ يَأْتِيهِ فَلَا يُرَدُّ رَأْسُ الْمَالِ كَمْ يُزَكِّيهِ قَالَ سَنَةً وَاحِدَةً[2].
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man whose wealth remains lost for five years. He then finds it and does not reject the capital. How much Zakat is he required to pay? He (the Imam) said, ‘He pays one year’s Zakat only.’”
لَيْسَ فِي الدَّيْنِ زَكَاةٌ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ صَاحِبُ الدَّيْنِ هُوَ الَّذِي يُؤَخِّرُهُ فَإِذَا كَانَ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى أَخْذِهِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَقْبِضَهُ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Zakat is not due on loan unless the lender delays acceptance of payment. If he is not able to achieve payment, then Zakat is not due until payment is received.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ[3] عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ لَهُ الدَّيْنُ عَلَى النَّاسِ يَحْتَبِسُ[4] فِيهِ الزَّكَاةَ قَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَقْبِضَهُ فَإِذَا قَبَضَهُ فَعَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ وَ إِنْ هُوَ طَالَ حَبْسُهُ عَلَى النَّاسِ حَتَّى يَتِمَّ لِذَلِكَ سِنُونَ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَرَجَ زَكَّاهُ لِعَامِهِ ذَلِكَ وَ إِنْ هُوَ كَانَ يَأْخُذُ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا قَلِيلًا فَلْيُزَكّ
“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man to whom people owe loans and do not pay. Is there Zakat on such loans? He (the Imam) said, ‘Zakat is not due until he receives payment. Once he receives payment, there is Zakat on him. If he does not receive payment and it remains for many years, still Zakat is not due o
إِنْ كَانَ الَّذِي أَقْرَضَهُ يُؤَدِّي زَكَاتَهُ فَلَا زَكَاةَ عَلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَا يُؤَدِّي أَدَّى الْمُسْتَقْرِضُ.

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَجُلٌ دَفَعَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مَالًا قَرْضاً عَلَى مَنْ زَكَاتُهُ عَلَى الْمُقْرِضِ أَوْ عَلَى الْمُقْتَرِضِ قَالَ لَا بَلْ زَكَاتُهَا إِنْ كَانَتْ مَوْضُوعَةً عِنْدَهُ حَوْلًا عَلَى الْمُقْتَرِضِ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَلَيْسَ عَلَى الْمُقْرِضِ زَكَاتُهَا قَالَ لَا يُزَكَّى الْمَالُ مِنْ وَجْهَيْنِ فِي عَامٍ وَاحِدٍ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الدَّافِعِ شَيْءٌ لِأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي يَدِهِ شَيْءٌ إِنَّمَا ا

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ بَاعَ بَيْعاً إِلَى ثَلَاثِ سِنِينَ مِنْ رَجُلٍ مَلِيٍّ بِحَقِّهِ وَ مَالِهِ فِي ثِقَةٍ يُزَكِّي ذَلِكَ الْمَالَ فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ تَمُرُّ بِهِ أَوْ يُزَكِّيهِ إِذَا أَخَذَهُ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ يُزَكِّيهِ إِذَا أَخَذَهُ قُلْتُ لَهُ لِكَمْ يُزَكِّيهِ قَالَ قَالَ لِثَلَاثِ سِنِينَ.
“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who buys something to pay for after three years from a man who trusts him in his right and asset. Is he required to pay its Zakat every year or he pays it because he has the asset in his hands? He (the Imam) said, ‘He who has taken it pays its Zakat.’ I then asked, ‘For h
سَأَلْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ وَ فِي يَدِهِ مَالٌ وَفَى بِدَيْنِهِ وَ الْمَالُ لِغَيْرِهِ هَلْ عَلَيْهِ زَكَاةٌ فَقَالَ إِذَا اسْتَقْرَضَ فَحَالَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ فَزَكَاتُهُ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا كَانَ فِيهِ فَضْلٌ.
“I once asked one of the two the Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who owes a loan and in his hand is an asset that is sufficient to pay the loan but it belongs to someone else. Is he required to pay Zakat? He (the Imam) said, ‘If he has borrowed and one year has passed, then its Zakat is on him if there is anything
إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ وَدِيعَةٌ تُحَرِّكُهَا فَعَلَيْكَ الزَّكَاةُ فَإِنْ لَمْ تُحَرِّكْهَا فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ شَيْءٌ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a certain asset is deposited with you and you are allowed to make it work its Zakat is on you but if you are not allowed to make it work then you do not owe anything.’”
كَتَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ[1] أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَلَيْهِ مَهْرُ امْرَأَتِهِ لَا تَطْلُبُهُ مِنْهُ إِمَّا لِرِفْقٍ بِزَوْجِهَا وَ إِمَّا حَيَاءً فَمَكَثَ بِذَلِكَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ عُمُرَهُ وَ عُمُرَهَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ زَكَاةُ ذَلِكَ الْمَهْرِ أَمْ لَا فَكَتَبَ لَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ إِلَّا فِي مَالِهِ.
“I once wrote to him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who owes Mahr of his woman who does not ask for payment due to sympathy or shyness. It goes on for their lifetime. Is he required to pay Zakat for that Mahr? He (the Imam) wrote, ‘Zakat is not due on him except for his assets.’”
فِي الرَّجُلِ يَنْسَى أَوْ يُعِينُ[2]- فَلَا يَزَالُ مَالُهُ دَيْناً كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ فِي زَكَاتِهِ قَالَ يُزَكِّيهِ وَ لَا يُزَكِّي مَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ إِنَّمَا الزَّكَاةُ عَلَى صَاحِبِ الْمَالِ
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who does not collect what he has lent because of forgetfulness or the desire to help his borrowers so his assets continue to remain as loans.How must he deal with Zakat? He (the owner of the assets) not the borrower pays Zakat.’”
أَنَّهُمَا قَالا أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ كَانَ لَهُ مَالٌ مَوْضُوعٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ فَإِنَّهُ يُزَكِّيهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ مِثْلُهُ وَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ فَلْيُزَكِّ مَا فِي يَدِهِ
“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘Whoever has an asset that remains with him for one year, he is required to pay its Zakat even if he owes to others an equal amount of asset or more. He is required to pay Zakat for what is in his hand.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الزَّكَاةِ فَقَالَ انْظُرْ شَهْراً مِنَ السَّنَةِ فَانْوِ أَنْ تُؤَدِّيَ زَكَاتَكَ فِيهِ فَإِذَا دَخَلَ ذَلِكَ الشَّهْرُ فَانْظُرْ مَا نَضَّ يَعْنِي مَا حَصَلَ فِي يَدِكَ مِنْ مَالِكَ فَزَكِّهِ فَإِذَا حَالَ الْحَوْلُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ الَّذِي زَكَّيْتَ فِيهِ فَاسْتَقْبِلْ بِمِثْلِ مَا صَنَعْتَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ.

قُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ لِلزَّكَاةِ وَقْتٌ مَعْلُومٌ تُعْطَى فِيهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَيَخْتَلِفُ فِي إِصَابَةِ الرَّجُلِ الْمَالَ وَ أَمَّا الْفِطْرَةُ فَإِنَّهَا مَعْلُومَةٌ.
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), Is there a definite time to pay Zakat? He (the Imam) said, ‘That depends on one’s earnings. However, the time for al-Fitrah is definite.”’
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع زَكَاتِي تَحِلُّ عَلَيَّ فِي شَهْرٍ أَ يَصْلُحُ لِي أَنْ أَحْبِسَ مِنْهَا شَيْئاً مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَجِيئَنِي مَنْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَقَالَ إِذَا حَالَ الْحَوْلُ فَأَخْرِجْهَا مِنْ مَالِكَ لَا تَخْلُطْهَا بِشَيْءٍ ثُمَّ أَعْطِهَا كَيْفَ شِئْتَ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ أَنَا كَتَبْتُهَا وَ أَثْبَتُّهَا يَسْتَقِيمُ لِي قَالَ لَا يَضُرُّكَ.
“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that there is a certain month in which I pay Zakat. Can I keep a certain amount separate for an emergency, in case, someone comes asking? He (the Imam) said, ‘Once the year is complete, you must pay Zakat of your asset and you must not mix it with anything, and then give whatever
سَأَلْتُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ تَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ فِي السَّنَةِ فِي ثَلَاثِ أَوْقَاتٍ أَ يُؤَخِّرُهَا حَتَّى يَدْفَعَهَا فِي وَقْتٍ وَاحِدٍ فَقَالَ مَتَى حَلَّتْ أَخْرَجَهَا وَ عَنِ الزَّكَاةِ فِي الْحِنْطَةِ وَ الشَّعِيرِ وَ التَّمْرِ وَ الزَّبِيبِ مَتَى تَجِبُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهَا قَالَ إِذَا مَا صَرَمَ وَ إِذَا مَا خَرَصَ.

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَكُونُ لِي عَلَى الرَّجُلِ مَالٌ فَأَقْبِضُهُ مِنْهُ مَتَى أُزَكِّيهِ قَالَ إِذَا قَبَضْتَهُ فَزَكِّهِ قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أَقْبِضُ بَعْضَهُ فِي صَدْرِ السَّنَةِ وَ بَعْضَهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَتَبَسَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا دَخَلْتَ فِيهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا قَبَضْتَهُ مِنْهُ فِي السِّتَّةِ الْأَشْهُرِ الْأُولَى فَزَكِّهِ لِسَنَتِهِ وَ مَا قَبَضْتَهُ بَعْدُ فِي السِّتَّةِ الْأَشْه

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَكُونُ نِصْفُ مَالِهِ عَيْناً وَ نِصْفُهُ دَيْناً فَتَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ قَالَ يُزَكِّي الْعَيْنَ وَ يَدَعُ الدَّيْنَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ اقْتَضَاهُ بَعْدَ سِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ قَالَ يُزَكِّيهِ حِينَ اقْتَضَاهُ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ هُوَ حَالَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ وَ حَلَّ الشَّهْرُ الَّذِي كَانَ يُزَكِّي فِيهِ وَ قَدْ أَتَى لِنِصْفِ مَالِهِ سَنَةٌ وَ لِنِصْفِهِ الْآخَرِ سِتَّةُ أَشْهُرٍ قَالَ يُزَكِّي
“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man whose asset is half in substance and half as loan. The time of paying Zakat comes. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is required to pay Zakat of the substance and leave the loan.’ I then said that he receives payment after six months. He (the Imam) said, ‘He is required to pay its
فِي الرَّجُلِ يُخْرِجُ زَكَاتَهُ فَيَقْسِمُ بَعْضَهَا وَ يُبْقِي بَعْضَهَا يَلْتَمِسُ بِهَا الْمَوْضِعَ فَيَكُونُ مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ إِلَى آخِرِهِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْهُرٍ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الرَّجُلُ يَكُونُ عِنْدَهُ الْمَالُ أَ يُزَكِّيهِ إِذَا مَضَى نِصْفُ السَّنَةِ قَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ وَ يَحِلَّ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ صَلَاةً إِلَّا لِوَقْتِهَا وَ كَذَلِكَ الزَّكَاةُ وَ لَا يَصُومُ أَحَدٌ شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ إِلَّا فِي شَهْرِهِ إِلَّا قَضَاءً وَ كُلُّ فَرِيضَةٍ إِنَّمَا تُؤَدَّى إِذَا حَلَّتْ.
