The Book of Marriage

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا نَظَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرْأَةِ الْحَسْنَاءِ فَلْيَأْتِ أَهْلَهُ فَإِنَّ الَّذِي مَعَهَا مِثْلُ الَّذِي مَعَ تِلْكَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ أَهْلٌ فَمَا يَصْنَعُ قَالَ فَلْيَرْفَعْ نَظَرَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَ لْيُرَاقِبْهُ وَ لْيَسْأَلْهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘If anyone of you looks to a beautiful woman he must go to his wife because what she has is just like what she has.’ A man then stood up and asked, ‘O Me

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عُثْمَانَ يَصُومُ النَّهَارَ وَ يَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مُغْضَباً يَحْمِلُ نَعْلَيْهِ حَتَّى جَاءَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَوَجَدَهُ يُصَلِّي فَانْصَرَفَ عُثْمَانُ حِينَ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا عُثْمَانُ لَمْ يُرْسِلْنِي اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِالرَّهْبَانِيَّةِ وَ لَكِنْ بَعَثَنِي بِالْحَنِيفِي

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once wife of ‘Uthman ibn Maz‘un came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, ‘Uthman, fasts during the day and stands up for Salat (prayer) during the night.’ The Messenger

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لِرَجُلٍ أَصْبَحْتَ صَائِماً قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَأَطْعَمْتَ مِسْكِيناً قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَارْجِعْ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَدَقَةٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once asked a man, ‘Are you fasting this morning?’ The man replied, ‘No, I am not fasting.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) asked, ‘Have you fed a destitute person?’ He

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ مَعَهُ أَهْلُهُ فِي السَّفَرِ لَا يَجِدُ الْمَاءَ أَ يَأْتِي أَهْلَهُ قَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَخَافَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ‌[1] قَالَ قُلْتُ طَلَبَ بِذَلِكَ اللَّذَّةَ أَوْ يَكُونُ شَبِقاً إِلَى النِّسَاءِ[2] قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّبِقَ يَخَافُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ- قُلْتُ يَطْلُبُ بِذَلِكَ اللَّذَّةَ قَالَ هُوَ حَلَالٌ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ يُرْوَى عَنِ النَّبِيِّ

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who is on a journey with his wife and they cannot find water; if he can go to bed with his wife. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not like it unless he is afraid for himself.’ I then asked, ‘Is it about the case of seeking to satisfy one’s l

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص دَخَلَ بَيْتَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَشَمَّ رِيحاً طَيِّبَةً فَقَالَ أَتَتْكُمُ الْحَوْلَاءُ فَقَالَتْ هُوَ ذَا هِيَ تَشْكُو زَوْجَهَا فَخَرَجَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلَاءُ فَقَالَتْ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي إِنَّ زَوْجِي عَنِّي مُعْرِضٌ فَقَالَ زِيدِيهِ يَا حَوْلَاءُ[2] قَالَتْ مَا أَتْرُكُ شَيْئاً طَيِّباً مِمَّا أَتَطَيَّبُ لَهُ بِهِ وَ هُوَ عَنِّي مُعْرِضٌ فَقَ

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once went to the house of ‘Umm Salamah, smelled a fine fragrance and asked, ’Had al-Hawla’ come to you?’ She replied, ’She is here, complaining against

إِنَّ ثَلَاثَ نِسْوَةٍ أَتَيْنَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص فَقَالَتْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ إِنَّ زَوْجِي لَا يَأْكُلُ اللَّحْمَ وَ قَالَتِ الْأُخْرَى إِنَّ زَوْجِي لَا يَشَمُّ الطِّيبَ وَ قَالَتِ الْأُخْرَى إِنَّ زَوْجِي لَا يَقْرَبُ النِّسَاءَ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَجُرُّ رِدَاءَهُ حَتَّى صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَ أَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِي لَا يَأْكُلُونَ اللَّحْمَ وَ لَا يَشَ

‘Three women came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and one of them said, “My husband does not eat meat.” The other one said, “My husband does not smell perfume.” The other one said, “My husband does not go near the woman.” The Mess

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَلَى فِطْرَتِي فَلْيَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِي وَ إِنَّ مِنْ سُنَّتِيَ النِّكَاحَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Whoever loves to follow my nature (culture), he must follow my Sunnah; and of my Sunnah is marriage.’”

كَانَ لَنَا جَارٌ شَيْخٌ لَهُ جَارِيَةٌ فَارِهَةٌ قَدْ أَعْطَى بِهَا ثَلَاثِينَ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ فَكَانَ لَا يَبْلُغُ مِنْهَا مَا يُرِيدُ وَ كَانَتْ تَقُولُ اجْعَلْ يَدَكَ كَذَا بَيْنَ شُفْرَيَ‌[1] فَإِنِّي أَجِدُ لِذَلِكَ لَذَّةً وَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لِزُرَارَةَ اسْأَلْ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ هَذَا فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَسْتَعِينَ بِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ عَلَيْهَا وَ

“In our neighborhood there lived an old man who had a beautiful slave-girl for whom he had paid thirty thousand dirham; but he was not able to reach the satisfaction from her what he wanted and she would say, ‘Place your hand between my two flanges, I feel the pleasure’, but he did not like to do so. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا جَامَعَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَأْتِيهِنَّ كَمَا يَأْتِي الطَّيْرُ لِيَمْكُثْ وَ لْيَلْبَثْ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ وَ لْيَتَلَبَّثْ‌[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘When anyone of you goes to bed (for sexual intercourse) with his wife, he must not go like birds do. He must stay in and persist.’ Certain ones have sai

فِي الرَّجُلِ يُجَامِعُ فَيَقَعُ عَنْهُ ثَوْبُهُ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

“About the case of a man whose clothes during going to bed with his wife fall off, abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع- عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُقَبِّلُ قُبُلَ الْمَرْأَةِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a man who kisses the vagina of a woman. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَ يَنْظُرُ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى فَرْجِ امْرَأَتِهِ وَ هُوَ يُجَامِعُهَا فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ‌[3].

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if a man can look at the vagina of his wife during sexual intercourse. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”

لَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِكَ وَ هَلِ اللَّذَّةُ إِلَّا ذَلِكَ.

“About the case of a man who looks at his wife when she is nude, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not unlawful. Pleasure is but in such things.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ اتَّقُوا الْكَلَامَ عِنْدَ مُلْتَقَى الْخِتَانَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يُورِثُ الْخَرَسَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Beware of speaking when two sexual organs meet; it may cause dumbness and muteness.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا يُجَامِعُ الْمُخْتَضِبُ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لِمَ لَا يُجَامِعُ الْمُخْتَضِبُ قَالَ لِأَنَّهُ مُحْتَصَرٌ[2].

’One who has dyed (his hairs) does not go to bed with his wife/ I then asked, ‘Why one who has dyed does not go to bed with his wife?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Because he is confined/”

قُلْتُ لَهُ هَلْ يُكْرَهُ الْجِمَاعُ فِي وَقْتٍ مِنْ الْأَوْقَاتِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ حَلَالًا قَالَ نَعَمْ مَا بَيْنَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ إِلَى طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَ مِنْ مَغِيبِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى مَغِيبِ الشَّفَقِ وَ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي تَنْكَسِفُ فِيهِ الشَّمْسُ وَ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الَّتِي يَنْخَسِفُ فِيهَا الْقَمَرُ وَ فِي اللَّيْلَةِ وَ فِي الْيَوْمِ اللَّذَيْنِ يَكُونُ فِيهِمَا الرِّيحُ السَّوْدَاءُ وَ الرِّيحُ الْحَمْرَ

“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about going to bed with one’s wife; if it is detestable anytime even though it is lawful.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is detestable between dawn and sunrise, from sunset to the disappearance of brightness in the west, on the day of sun eclipse, in the night of moon eclipse, in the day

مَنْ أَتَى أَهْلَهُ فِي مُحَاقِ الشَّهْرِ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ لِسِقْطِ الْوَلَدِ.

“Abu al-Hassan, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One who goes to bed with his wife in the night of the end of a lunar month when the moon is not visible at all may not remain safe from (misfortune of) premature birth of the child.’”

إِنَّ فِيمَا أَوْصَى بِهِ- رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَلِيّاً ع قَالَ يَا عَلِيُّ لَا تُجَامِعْ أَهْلَكَ فِي أَوَّلِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنَ الْهِلَالِ وَ لَا فِي لَيْلَةِ النِّصْفِ وَ لَا فِي آخِرِ لَيْلَةٍ فَإِنَّهُ يُتَخَوَّفُ عَلَى وَلَدِ مَنْ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ الْخَبَلُ‌[1] فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع وَ لِمَ ذَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْجِنَّ يُكْثِرُونَ غِشْيَانَ نِسَائِهِمْ فِي أَوَّلِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنَ الْهِلَالِ وَ لَيْلَةِ ال

‘Of the issues that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, taught Ali, Alayhi al-Salam, as advice were the following: O Ali, you must not go to bed with your wife in the first night of a lunar month, in the night of the middle of the month,

يُكْرَهُ لِلرَّجُلِ إِذَا قَدِمَ مِنَ السَّفَرِ أَنْ يَطْرُقَ أَهْلَهُ لَيْلًا حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ.

‘It is detestable for a man to go to bed with his wife in the night of his arrival from a journey until the morning.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَكْرَهُ لِأُمَّتِي أَنْ يَغْشَى الرَّجُلُ أَهْلَهُ فِي النِّصْفِ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ أَوْ فِي غُرَّةِ الْهِلَالِ فَإِنَّ مَرَدَةَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَ الْجِنِّ تَغْشَى بَنِي آدَمَ فَيُجَنَّنُونَ وَ يُخَبَّلُونَ أَ مَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمُصَابَ يُصْرَعُ فِي النِّصْفِ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ وَ عِنْدَ غُرَّةِ الْهِلَالِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘I dislike for my followers that one of them goes to bed with his wife in the middle of the month or when it is new moon because the rebels of satans and

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا يُجَامِعِ الرَّجُلُ امْرَأَتَهُ وَ لَا جَارِيَتَهُ وَ فِي الْبَيْتِ صَبِيٌّ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا يُورِثُ الزِّنَا.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A man with his wife must not go to bed in a house where a child exits because it leads to fornication.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ وَ الَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا غَشِيَ امْرَأَتَهُ وَ فِي الْبَيْتِ صَبِيٌّ مُسْتَيْقِظٌ يَرَاهُمَا وَ يَسْمَعُ كَلَامَهُمَا وَ نَفَسَهُمَا مَا أَفْلَحَ أَبَداً إِذَا كَانَ غُلَاماً كَانَ زَانِياً أَوْ جَارِيَةً كَانَتْ زَانِيَةً وَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَغْشَى أَهْلَهُ أَغْلَقَ الْبَابَ وَ أَرْخَى السُّتُورَ وَ أَخْرَجَ الْخَدَمَ.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn ibn Zayd from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘By the One

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ قَدْ أَسْنَنْتُ وَ قَدْ تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً بِكْراً صَغِيرَةً وَ لَمْ أَدْخُلْ بِهَا وَ أَنَا أَخَافُ أَنَّهَا إِذَا دَخَلَتْ عَلَيَّ تَرَانِي أَنْ تَكْرَهَنِي لِخِضَابِي وَ كِبَرِي فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذَا دَخَلَتْ فَمُرْهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَصِلَ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مُتَوَضِّئَةً ثُمَّ أَنْتَ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهَا حَتَّى تَوَضَّ

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa and A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘ Abd Allah from ibn Mahbub from Jamil ibn Salih from abu Basir who has said the following: “I heard a man saying to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service f

إِذَا دَخَلْتَ بِأَهْلِكَ فَخُذْ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا وَ اسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بِأَمَانَتِكَ أَخَذْتُهَا وَ بِكَلِمَاتِكَ اسْتَحْلَلْتُهَا فَإِنْ قَضَيْتَ لِي مِنْهَا وَلَداً فَاجْعَلْهُ مُبَارَكاً تَقِيّاً مِنْ شِيعَةِ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ لَا تَجْعَلْ لِلشَّيْطَانِ فِيهِ شِرْكاً وَ لَا نَصِيباً[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you meet your wife hold to her forehead and face al-Qiblah (al-Ka’bah) and say, ‘O Lord, in Your trust I have taken her (in marriage) and with Your words I have made her lawful. If You have destined for me from her a child, then make the child a blessed one, pious, of the Shi ’ah

قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ أَحَدُكُمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قُلْتُ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ إِذَا هَمَّ بِذَلِكَ فَلْيُصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَ لْيَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَزَوَّجَ فَقَدِّرْ لِي مِنَ النِّسَاءِ أَعَفَّهُنَّ فَرْجاً وَ أَحْفَظَهُنَّ لِي فِي نَفْسِهَا وَ مَالِي وَ أَوْسَعَهُنَّ رِزْقاً وَ أَعْظَمَهُنَّ بَرَكَةً وَ قَدِّرْ لِي وَلَداً طَيِّباً تَجْع

3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa and A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather, al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once asked me, ‘When one of you marries,

أَتَى رَجُلٌ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنِّي تَزَوَّجْتُ فَادْعُ اللَّهَ لِي فَقَالَ قُلِ- اللَّهُمَّ بِكَلِمَاتِكَ اسْتَحْلَلْتُهَا وَ بِأَمَانَتِكَ أَخَذْتُهَا اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهَا وَلُوداً وَدُوداً لَا تَفْرَكُ تَأْكُلُ مِمَّا رَاحَ وَ لَا تَسْأَلُ عَمَّا سَرَحَ‌[2].

4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from abu Yusuf from al-Mithamiy in a marfu’ manner has said the following: “Once, a man came to ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), and said, ‘I have just married, pray for me to Allah.’ He (the Imam) said, ’Say, 0 Lord, with Your words I have made her marriage lawful an

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا أَرَادَ الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ الْمَرْأَةَ فَلْيَقُلْ أَقْرَرْتُ بِالْمِيثَاقِ الَّذِي أَخَذَ اللَّهُ إِمْسَاكٌ‌ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ تَسْرِيحٌ بِإِحْسانٍ‌

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘When a man wants to marry a woman he should say, “I authenticate my covenant with Allah which is: “maintain in a reasonable way or allow to go with kindness.” (2:229)’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ فِي الرَّجُلِ إِذَا أَتَى أَهْلَهُ فَخَشِيَ أَنْ يُشَارِكَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ.

‘In the name of Allah’ and seek protection with Allah against Satan.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ أَيَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْكُمْ إِذَا دَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ امْرَأَتُهُ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَ يَسْتَطِيعُ الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَقُولَ شَيْئاً فَقَالَ أَ لَا أُعَلِّمُكَ مَا تَقُولُ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ تَقُولُ- بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ اسْتَحْلَلْتُ فَرْجَهَا وَ فِي أَمَانَةِ اللَّهِ أَخَذْتُهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ قَضَيْتَ لِي فِي رَحِمِهَا شَيْئاً فَاجْعَلْهُ بَارّاً تَقِ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad, what does one of you say when his wife comes to him?’ I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, can a man say anything?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Will you like if I teach you what to say?’ I replied, ‘Yes, please teach me.’ He (the Imam)

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ إِذَا جَامَعَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ بِاللَّهِ- اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنِي الشَّيْطَانَ وَ جَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنِي قَالَ فَإِنْ قَضَى اللَّهُ بَيْنَهُمَا وَلَداً لَا يَضُرُّهُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ أَبَداً.

“In the name of Allah, by the help of Allah, O Lord, keep Satan away from me and from what You have granted me.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If Allah decides to grant them a child Satan will never be able to harm the child.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جَالِساً فَذَكَرَ شِرْكَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَعَظَّمَهُ حَتَّى أَفْزَعَنِي قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَمَا الْمَخْرَجُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ الْجِمَاعَ فَقُلْ‌ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ* الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ بَدِيعُ السَّماواتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ* اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ قَضَيْتَ مِنِّي فِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ خَلِيفَةً فَلَا تَجْعَلْ لِلشَّيْطَانِ فِيهِ شِرْكاً وَ لَا نَ

“I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) mentioned Satan and called him greatly dangerous so much so that it frightened me and I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what is the way out from it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘When you decide to go to bed with your wife say, “In the name

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ إِذَا أَتَيْتَ أَهْلَكَ فَأَيَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ تَقُولُ قَالَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ وَ أُطِيقُ أَنْ أَقُولَ شَيْئاً قَالَ بَلَى قُلِ- اللَّهُمَّ بِكَلِمَاتِكَ اسْتَحْلَلْتُ فَرْجَهَا وَ بِأَمَانَتِكَ أَخَذْتُهَا فَإِنْ قَضَيْتَ فِي رَحِمِهَا شَيْئاً فَاجْعَلْهُ تَقِيّاً زَكِيّاً وَ لَا تَجْعَلْ لِلشَّيْطَانِ فِيهِ شِرْكاً قَالَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ وَ يَكُونُ فِيهِ شِ

It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from Hamzah ibn ‘Abd Allah from Jamil ibn Darraj from abu al- Walid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘O abu Muhammad, what do you say when you go to bed with your wife?’ I said, ‘I pr

أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رُبَّمَا خُلِقَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَ رُبَّمَا خُلِقَ مِنْهُمَا جَمِيعاً.

“About the case of the seeds which are from man and Satan when they share, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Perhaps it is created from one of them or perhaps from both of them together.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْعَزْلِ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ‌[1].

“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about withdrawing before semen discharge. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is up to the man’s choice.’”

لَا بَأْسَ بِالْعَزْلِ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ الْحُرَّةِ إِنْ أَحَبَّ صَاحِبُهَا وَ إِنْ كَرِهَتْ لَيْسَ لَهَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ شَيْ‌ءٌ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not unlawful to withdraw before semen discharge from the woman who is free, if he likes even if she may not like. She does not have any say in it.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْعَزْلِ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ يَصْرِفُهُ حَيْثُ شَاءَ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about withdrawing before semen discharge. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is up to the man. He deals with it as he chooses.’”

كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع لَا يَرَى بِالْعَزْلِ بَأْساً فَقَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ- وَ إِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَ أَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلى‌ أَنْفُسِهِمْ أَ لَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قالُوا بَلى‌[2] فَكُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ الْمِيثَاقَ فَهُوَ خَارِجٌ وَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَى صَخْرَةٍ صَمَّاءَ.

4. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman al- Fiaddhdha’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), did not consider withdrawing before semen discharge as unlawful and he (the Imam) read this

لَيْسَ الْغَيْرَةُ إِلَّا لِلرِّجَالِ وَ أَمَّا النِّسَاءُ فَإِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ مِنْهُنَّ حَسَدٌ وَ الْغَيْرَةُ لِلرِّجَالِ وَ لِذَلِكَ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ إِلَّا زَوْجَهَا وَ أَحَلَّ لِلرِّجَالِ أَرْبَعاً وَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَكْرَمُ أَنْ يَبْتَلِيَهُنَّ بِالْغَيْرَةِ وَ يُحِلَّ لِلرِّجَالِ مَعَهَا ثَلَاثاً

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Pride is with men only and with women it is jealousy. Vanity is with men and for this reason Allah has prohibited women except to have one husband and for men He has made up to four (wives) lawful. Allah is most gracious. He does not place vanity and pride in them (women) then make th

إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمْ يَجْعَلِ الْغَيْرَةَ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَ إِنَّمَا تَغَارُ الْمُنْكِرَاتُ مِنْهُنَّ فَأَمَّا الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ فَلَا إِنَّمَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الْغَيْرَةَ لِلرِّجَالِ لِأَنَّهُ أَحَلَّ لِلرَّجُلِ أَرْبَعاً وَ مَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ وَ لَمْ يَجْعَلْ لِلْمَرْأَةِ إِلَّا زَوْجَهَا فَإِذَا أَرَادَتْ مَعَهُ غَيْرَهُ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ زَانِيَةً. قَالَ وَ- رَوَاهُ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَد

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has not placed pride in women. Such feeling comes from detested ones among them; however, the believing ones of them are free of pride. Allah has placed pride in men; He has made lawful for men up to four and those whom they own (slaves). For women

بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَاعِدٌ إِذْ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ عُرْيَانَةٌ حَتَّى قَامَتْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي فَجَرْتُ فَطَهِّرْنِي قَالَ وَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ يَعْدُو فِي أَثَرِهَا وَ أَلْقَى عَلَيْهَا ثَوْباً فَقَالَ مَا هِيَ مِنْكَ فَقَالَ صَاحِبَتِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ خَلَوْتُ بِجَارِيَتِي فَصَنَعَتْ مَا تَرَى فَقَالَ ضُمَّهَا إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ الْغَيْرَاءَ[1] لَا تُبْصِرُ أَعْلَى ا

“Once the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was sitting that a nude woman came until she stood right in front of him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have sinned, so cleanse me.’ He (the narrator) has said that after her a man came runni

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ غَيْرَةُ النِّسَاءِ الْحَسَدُ وَ الْحَسَدُ هُوَ أَصْلُ الْكُفْرِ إِنَّ النِّسَاءَ إِذَا غِرْنَ غَضِبْنَ وَ إِذَا غَضِبْنَ كَفَرْنَ إِلَّا الْمُسْلِمَاتُ مِنْهُنَّ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Pride of women is jealousy and jealousy is the root of disbelief. When women become jealous they become angry and when they become angry they disbelieve except the Muslim ones among them.’”

ذَكَرَ رَجُلٌ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع امْرَأَتَهُ فَأَحْسَنَ عَلَيْهَا الثَّنَاءَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَغَرْتَهَا[2] قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَأَغِرْهَا فَأَغَارَهَا فَثَبَتَتْ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي قَدْ أَغَرْتُهَا فَثَبَتَتْ فَقَالَ هِيَ كَمَا تَقُولُ.

“Once a man mentioned his wife before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he praised her quite well. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), asked, ‘Have you made her jealous?’ He replied, ‘No, I have not done so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Make her feel jealous.’ He did so and he found the proof; then said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), that he has foun

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْمَرْأَةُ تَغَارُ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ تُؤْذِيهِ قَالَ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْحُبِّ.

‘When a woman feels jealous against man, she causes disappointment for him.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because of (her) love/”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مِنْ سَرِيَّةٍ قَدْ كَانَ أُصِيبَ فِيهَا نَاسٌ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَاسْتَقْبَلَتْهُ النِّسَاءُ يَسْأَلْنَهُ عَنْ قَتْلَاهُنَّ فَدَنَتْ مِنْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا فَعَلَ فُلَانٌ قَالَ وَ مَا هُوَ مِنْكِ قَالَتْ أَبِي قَالَ احْمَدِي اللَّهَ وَ اسْتَرْجِعِي فَقَدِ اسْتُشْهِدَ فَفَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ

“I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, once returned from an armed expedition during which a large number of Muslims were killed. Women came to him (the Messenger of Allah) asking about their

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع يَقُولُ‌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص لِابْنَةِ جَحْشٍ قُتِلَ خَالُكِ حَمْزَةُ قَالَ فَاسْتَرْجَعَتْ وَ قَالَتْ أَحْتَسِبُهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا قُتِلَ أَخُوكِ فَاسْتَرْجَعَتْ وَ قَالَتْ أَحْتَسِبُهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا قُتِلَ زَوْجُكِ فَوَضَعَتْ يَدَهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهَا وَ صَرَخَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَا يَعْدِلُ الزَّوْجَ عِنْدَ الْمَرْأَةِ شَيْ‌ءٌ.

‘Your maternal uncle, Hamzah is killed.’ She asked for a happy return to Allah and said, ‘I expect good reward from Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) then told her, ‘Your brother is also killed.’ She asked for a happy return to Allah and said, ‘I expect good reward from Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) then said,

جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ فَقَالَ لَهَا أَنْ تُطِيعَهُ وَ لَا تَعْصِيَهُ وَ لَا تَصَدَّقَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ وَ لَا تَصُومَ تَطَوُّعاً إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ وَ لَا تَمْنَعَهُ نَفْسَهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ عَلَى ظَهْرِ قَتَبٍ‌[1] وَ لَا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ وَ إِنْ خَرَجَتْ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِهِ لَعَنَتْ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that once a woman came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and asked, ‘What is the right of husband on a woman?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said to her, ‘She must yield to and obey him and must not oppose and d

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ أَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ بَاتَتْ وَ زَوْجُهَا عَلَيْهَا سَاخِطٌ فِي حَقٍّ لَمْ تُقْبَلْ مِنْهَا صَلَاةٌ حَتَّى يَرْضَى عَنْهَا وَ أَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ تَطَيَّبَتْ لِغَيْرِ زَوْجِهَا لَمْ تُقْبَلْ مِنْهَا صَلَاةٌ حَتَّى تَغْتَسِلَ مِنْ طِيبِهَا كَغُسْلِهَا مِنْ جَنَابَتِهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a woman passes a night and her husband is angry with her because of a right to which she does not yield, her Salat (prayer) is not accepted until he becomes happy with her. If a woman wears perfume for other than her husband, her Salat (prayer) is not accepted until she washes them

ثَلَاثَةٌ لَا يُرْفَعُ لَهُمْ عَمَلٌ عَبْدٌ آبِقٌ وَ امْرَأَةٌ زَوْجُهَا عَلَيْهَا سَاخِطٌ وَ الْمُسْبِلُ إِزَارَهُ خُيَلَاءَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The good deeds of three kinds of people cannot rise up. One is a runaway slave, a woman whose husband is not happy with her and one who drags his gown on the ground out of pride.’”

جِهَادُ الْمَرْأَةِ حُسْنُ التَّبَعُّلِ‌[3].

“Abu Ibrahim (a.s.), has said, ‘Jihad (struggle for the cause of Allah) of a woman is her living a proper spousal life.’”

ثَلَاثَةٌ لَا تُقْبَلُ لَهُمْ صَلَاةٌ عَبْدٌ آبِقٌ مِنْ مَوَالِيهِ حَتَّى يَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَ امْرَأَةٌ بَاتَتْ وَ زَوْجُهَا عَلَيْهَا سَاخِطٌ وَ رَجُلٌ أَمَّ قَوْماً وَ هُمْ لَهُ كَارِهُونَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Salat (prayer) of three kinds of people is not accepted. One is a runaway slave from his masters until he places his hand in their hands, a woman who passes the night when her husband is angry with her and a man who leads a people in Salat (prayer) and they dislike him.’”
