سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْحِيتَانِ الَّتِي يَصِيدُهَا الْمَجُوسِيُّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ع كَانَ يَقُولُ الْحِيتَانُ وَ الْجَرَادُ ذَكِيٌّ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the fish caught by Zoroastrians. He (the Imam) said that Ali (a.s.), would say, ‘Fish and locusts are clean (slaughtered properly).”’

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about the fishing by Zoroastrian by means of fishing nets and with a mention of the pagan consecration expressions. سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ سَمَكَةٍ وَثَبَتْ مِنْ نَهَرٍ فَوَقَعَتْ عَلَى الْجُدِّ مِنَ النَّهَرِ[2] فَمَاتَتْ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ أَكْلُهَا فَقَالَ إِنْ أَخَذْتَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ ثُمَّ مَاتَتْ فَكُلْهَا وَ إِنْ مَاتَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَأْخُذَهَا فَلَا تَأْكُلْهَا.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a fish that jumps out of the canal and lands on the side and it then dies: if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you pick it up before it dies you can use it for food but if it dies before you pick it up, then do not use it for food.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ع يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا ضَرَبَ صَاحِبُ الشَّبَكَةِ بِالشَّبَكَةِ فَمَا أَصَابَ فِيهَا مِنْ حَيٍّ أَوْ مَيِّتٍ فَهُوَ حَلَالٌ مَا خَلَا مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ وَ لَا يُؤْكَلُ الطَّافِي مِنَ السَّمَكِ‌[3].

Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘I heard my father saying, “If a man sets a fishing net whatever is caught in it dead or alive is lawful for food, except that which does not have scales and the dead fish floating on the water.’””

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. What do you say about a snake that has swallowed a fish then has thrown it out and it still is alive and struggling; if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘If its scales are peeled off then do not use it for food

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ نَهَى أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع أَنْ يَتَصَيَّدَ الرَّجُلُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ وَ كَانَ ع يَمُرُّ بِالسَّمَّاكِينَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَيَنْهَاهُمْ عَنْ أَنْ يَتَصَيَّدُوا مِنَ السَّمَكِ- يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin prohibited a man’s fishing on Fridays before Salat (prayer). He (a.s.), would go to the fish market on Fridays and prohibit them from fishing on Fridays before Friday Salat (prayer).”’

“Once abu Ja‘far (a.s.), made me read something from the books of ‘Ali (a.s.). Therein I found this: I prohibit you from using eel for food, al-Zimir, (a certain kind of fish), Mar mahi (something like fish), snake fish, dead fish floating on water and the spleen.’ I then asked, ‘O child of the Messenger of Allah, may

لَا تَأْكُلُوا مِنَ السَّمَكِ إِلَّا شَيْئاً عَلَيْهِ فُلُوسٌ وَ كَرِهَ الْمَارْمَاهِيَ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja’far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al- Mu’minin (a.s.), disliked eel. He (the Imam) had said, ‘Do not use for food the kind of fish which has no scales’ and he (the Imam) disliked al-Mar Mahi (catfish).”’

“Dried up rabitha (a type of fish) was sent to me in a sack and I visited Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.), and asked him about it. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can eat it; it has scales.’”

كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ع- بِالْكُوفَةِ يَرْكَبُ بَغْلَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص ثُمَّ يَمُرُّ بِسُوقِ الْحِيتَانِ فَيَقُولُ لَا تَأْكُلُوا وَ لَا تَبِيعُوا مِنَ السَّمَكِ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ قِشْرٌ.

سَأَلَ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا حَاضِرٌ عَنِ الْجِرِّيِّ فَقَالَ وَجَدْنَا فِي كِتَابِ عَلِيٍّ ع أَشْيَاءَ مُحَرَّمَةً مِنَ السَّمَكِ فَلَا تَقْرَبْهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ قِشْرٌ مِنَ السَّمَكِ فَلَا تَقْرَبَنَّهُ.

“Al-‘Ala’ ibn Kamil asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when I was present, about eel. He (the Imam) said, ‘We have found in the book of Ali (a.s.), of fish certain varities are unlawful for food so do not go close to them.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘Of fish those which have no scales, do not go close to them.’”

أَهْدَى الْفَيْضُ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ- لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَبِيثَا فَأَدْخَلَهَا إِلَيْهِ وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا وَ قَالَ هَذِهِ لَهَا قِشْرٌ فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ وَ نَحْنُ نَرَاهُ.

‘This has scales.’ He (the Imam) ate thereof and we saw him eating.”’

أَلَا لَا تَأْكُلُوا وَ لَا تَبِيعُوا مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ قِشْرٌ.

’Amir al-Mu’minin would ride the mule of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Imam) then would pass by the fish market and say, ‘You must not use for food and must not sell whatever does not have scales.’”

خَرَجْنَا بِسَمَكٍ نَتَلَقَّى بِهِ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ قَدْ خَرَجْنَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَ قَدْ قَدِمَ هُوَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ لَهُ‌[1] فَقَالَ وَيْحَكَ يَا فُلَانُ لَعَلَّ مَعَكَ سَمَكاً فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ يَا سَيِّدِي جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ انْزِلُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ لَعَلَّهُ زَهْوٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَرَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ ارْكَبُوا لَا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِيهِ وَ الزَّهْوُ سَمَكٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about eel. He (the Imam) said, ‘Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, metamorphosed a group of banu Israelites, those of them who went to the sea are eels, al-Zimir and al-Mar Mahi and others, and those who remained on land are apes, pigs, wild cats and lizards and others.’”

كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرِّضَا ع السَّمَكُ لَا يَكُونُ لَهُ قِشْرٌ أَ يُؤْكَلُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ مِنَ السَّمَكِ مَا يَكُونُ لَهُ زَعَارَّةٌ[3] فَيَحْتَكُّ بِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ فَتَذْهَبُ قُشُورُهُ وَ لَكِنْ إِذَا اخْتَلَفَ طَرَفَاهُ يَعْنِي ذَنَبَهُ وَ رَأْسَهُ فَكُلْهُ.

“I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), and asked if fish which has no scales can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Of fish there are those which have bad manners and they rub against everything and its scales go away, but if its two ends are different, its tail and head, then you can use it for food.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ يَصِيدُ الطَّيْرَ يُسَاوِي دَرَاهِمَ كَثِيرَةً وَ هُوَ مُسْتَوِي الْجَنَاحَيْنِ وَ يَعْرِفُ صَاحِبَهُ أَوْ يَجِيئُهُ فَيَطْلُبُهُ مَنْ لَا يَتَّهِمُهُ قَالَ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ إِمْسَاكُهُ يَرُدُّهُ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَإِنْ هُوَ صَادَ مَا هُوَ مَالِكٌ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ لَا يَعْرِفُ لَهُ طَالِباً قَالَ هُوَ لَهُ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about hunting pigeons worth one-half of a dirham or one dirham. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you know its owner return it to him; but if you do not know its owner and its wings are complete with both of which it can fly then it is yours . 555

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, if a bird is trapped in the house and it is taken, is taking it lawful or unlawful. He (the Imam) asked, ‘O ’Isma‘il is it healthy or it is not healthy and free ? 5 I then asked, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ اسْتَوْصُوا بِالصِّنِينَاتِ خَيْراً يَعْنِي الْخُطَّافَ- فَإِنَّهُنَّ آنَسُ طَيْرِ النَّاسِ بِالنَّاسِ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَ تَدْرُونَ مَا تَقُولُ الصِّنِينَةُ إِذَا مَرَّتْ وَ تَرَنَّمَتْ‌[1] تَقُولُ‌ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ‌ حَتَّى قَرَأَ أُمَّ الْكِتَابِ فَإِذَا كَانَ آخِرُ تَرَنُّمِهَا قَالَتْ‌ وَ لَا الضَّالِّينَ‌ مَدَّ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص ص

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, recommended to be good to al-Sininat (the crows). They among the birds are the ones that feel comfortable with people and he (the Messenger of Allah) then said, ‘D

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قَتْلِ الْخُطَّافِ أَوْ إِيذَائِهِنَّ فِي الْحَرَمِ فَقَالَ لَا يُقْتَلْنَ فَإِنِّي كُنْتُ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَرَآنِي وَ أَنَا أُوذِيهِنَّ فَقَالَ لِي يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تَقْتُلْهُنَّ وَ لَا تُؤْذِهِنَّ فَإِنَّهُنَّ لَا يُؤْذِينَ شَيْئاً.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about killing crows and disquieting them in al-Haram (the sacred area). He (the Imam) said, ‘You must not kill them. I was with Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), and he saw me troubling them. He (the Imam) said to me, ‘Do not kill them or trouble them; they do not trouble anything.’”

لَا تَأْكُلُوا الْقُنْبُرَةَ وَ لَا تَسُبُّوهَا وَ لَا تُعْطُوهَا الصِّبْيَانَ يَلْعَبُونَ بِهَا فَإِنَّهَا كَثِيرَةُ التَّسْبِيحِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى وَ تَسْبِيحُهَا لَعَنَ اللَّهُ مُبْغِضِي آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع.

’Do not use lark for food, do not abuse it and do not give it to children to play with; it says Tasbih a great deal and it is, ‘O Allah, condemn those who hate Muhammad and his family, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause.’”

كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع يَقُولُ‌ مَا أَزْرَعُ الزَّرْعَ لِطَلَبِ الْفَضْلِ فِيهِ وَ مَا أَزْرَعُهُ إِلَّا لِيَنَالَهُ الْمُعْتَرُّ وَ ذُو الْحَاجَةِ وَ تَنَالَهُ الْقُنْبُرَةُ مِنْهُ خَاصَّةً مِنَ الطَّيْرِ.

“Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), has said, ‘I do not work in plantation for gains except that I want this gain for the destitute, the needy and especially for the lark among birds/”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا تَقْتُلُوا الْقُنْبُرَةَ وَ لَا تَأْكُلُوا لَحْمَهَا فَإِنَّهَا كَثِيرَةُ التَّسْبِيحِ تَقُولُ فِي آخِرِ تَسْبِيحِهَا لَعَنَ اللَّهُ مُبْغِضِي آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع.

“I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), saying, ’Do not kill the lark and do not use its flesh for food, because it says a great deal of Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) and at the end it says, ‘May Allah condemn those who hate the family of Muhammad, ‘Alayhim al-Salam.’”

قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع‌ الْقُنْزُعَةُ[2] الَّتِي عَلَى رَأْسِ الْقُنْبُرَةِ مِنْ مَسْحَةِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ دَاوُدَ وَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الذَّكَرَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَسْفَدَ أُنْثَاهُ‌[3] فَامْتَنَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهَا لَا تَمْتَنِعِي فَمَا أُرِيدُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُخْرِجَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنِّي نَسَمَةً تُذْكَرُ بِهِ فَأَجَابَتْهُ إِلَى مَا طَلَبَ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَتْ أَنْ تَبِيضَ قَالَ لَهَا أَيْنَ تُرِيدِينَ
