Chapter on Miscellaneous Narrations Regarding Tawaf.

أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَطُوفُ وَ يَسْعَى ثُمَّ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ تَطَوُّعاً قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقَصِّرَ قَالَ مَا يُعْجِبُنِي‌[2].

"I asked Abu Ja'far (as) about a man who performs Tawaf and Sa'i and then performs additional Tawaf around the Ka'bah voluntarily before cutting his hair (Taqsir). Imam (as) said: 'I do not approve of it.'"

لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَجُلٌ كَانَتْ مَعَهُ صَاحِبَتُهُ لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ الْقِيَامَ عَلَى رِجْلِهَا فَحَمَلَهَا زَوْجُهَا فِي مَحْمِلٍ فَطَافَ بِهَا طَوَافَ الْفَرِيضَةِ بِالْبَيْتِ وَ بِالصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ أَ يُجْزِيهِ ذَلِكَ الطَّوَافُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ طَوَافُهُ بِهَا فَقَالَ إِيهاً وَ اللَّهِ إِذاً[3].

"I asked Abu Abdullah (as) about a man whose wife was unable to stand on her feet, so he carried her in a litter and performed the Tawaf of obligation around the Ka'bah and the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah with her. Would that Tawaf suffice for himself as well? Imam (as) replied: 'Indeed, by Allah (swt), it would.'"

بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ تَطُوفُ حَوْلَ الْكَعْبَةِ وَ عَلَيْكَ‌ بُرْطُلَةٌ لَا تَلْبَسْهَا حَوْلَ الْكَعْبَةِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ زِيِّ الْيَهُودِ[1].

Abu Abdullah (as) saw me circumambulating the Ka'bah while wearing a burṭula (a type of footwear), and Imam (as) said: "After this, you circumambulate the Ka'bah while wearing a burṭula? Do not wear it while circumambulating the Ka'bah, for it is from the attire of the Jews."

وَ رَوَى مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ‌ يُسْتَحَبُّ أَنْ تَطُوفَ ثَلَاثَمِائَةٍ وَ سِتِّينَ أُسْبُوعاً عَدَدَ أَيَّامِ السَّنَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَثَلَاثَمِائَةٍ وَ سِتِّينَ شَوْطاً فَإِنَّ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَمَا قَدَرْتَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الطَّوَافِ‌[2].

Hadith.2840 - Mu'awiyah ibn Ammar narrated from Abu Abdullah (as): "It is recommended to perform three hundred and sixty circuits (asbu‘an, i.e., sets of seven laps) of circumambulation, corresponding to the days of the year. If you are unable to do so, then three hundred and sixty laps (shautan, individual circuits).

وَ سَأَلَ أَبَانٌ‌[3] أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ أَ كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص طَوَافٌ يُعْرَفُ بِهِ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَطُوفُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ عَشَرَةَ أَسَابِيعَ‌[4] ثَلَاثَةً أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ وَ ثَلَاثَةً آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ وَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ وَ اثْنَيْنِ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ وَ كَانَ فِيمَا بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ رَاحَتُهُ.

لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع إِنِّي طُفْتُ أَرْبَعَةَ أَسَابِيعَ فَعَيِيتُ أَ فَأُصَلِّي رَكَعَاتِهَا وَ أَنَا جَالِسٌ‌[5] قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ صَلَاةَ اللَّيْلِ إِذَا أَعْيَا أَوْ وَجَدَ فَتْرَةً وَ هُوَ جَالِسٌ فَقَالَ‌ يَطُوفُ الرَّجُلُ جَالِساً[1] فَقُلْتُ لَا قَالَ فَتُصَلِّيهِمَا وَ أَنْتَ قَائِمٌ.

إِذَا كَانَ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْجَهَالَةِ أَعَادَ الْحَجَّ وَ عَلَيْهِ بَدَنَةٌ[2].

Hadith.2844 - Ali ibn Abi Hamza narrated from Imam Abu al-Hasan (as): He was asked about a man who forgot to perform the circumambulation around the Kaaba (Tawaf) until he returned to his family. Imam (as) replied: "If it was out of ignorance, he must repeat the Hajj and offer a sacrifice of a camel."

وَ رَوَى هِشَامُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ‌ مَنْ أَقَامَ بِمَكَّةَ سَنَةً فَالطَّوَافُ لَهُ أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ وَ مَنْ أَقَامَ سَنَتَيْنِ خَلَطَ مِنْ ذَا وَ ذَا وَ مَنْ أَقَامَ ثَلَاثَ سِنِينَ كَانَتِ الصَّلَاةُ لَهُ أَفْضَلَ‌[3].

Hadith.2845 - Hisham ibn al-Hakam narrated from Abu Abdullah (as): "Whoever resides in Mecca for one year, circumambulation (Tawaf) is better for him than prayer. Whoever resides for two years, he should combine between this (Tawaf) and that (prayer). And whoever resides for three years, prayer becomes better for him."
