قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ إِذَا كَانَ لَكَ يَا سَمَاعَةُ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ حَاجَةٌ فَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ فَإِنَّ لَهُمَا عِنْدَكَ شَأْناً مِنَ الشَّأْنِ وَ قَدْراً مِنَ الْقَدْرِ فَبِحَقِّ ذَلِكَ الشَّأْنِ وَ بِحَقِّ ذَلِكَ الْقَدْرِ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ بِي كَذَا وَ كَذَا فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ لَم

“Abu al-Hassan (as) said to me: 'O Sama’a, whenever you have a request before Allah, the Most Majestic and Most Holy, say this: ‘O Allah, I ask you by the right of Muhammad and Ali, for they have a special status and a high rank with You, and a decree from Your decree. لَمَّا بَعَثَ أَبُو الدَّوَانِيقِ‌[1] إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع رَفَعَ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ حَفِظْتَ الْغُلَامَيْنِ بِصَلَاحِ أَبَوَيْهِمَا فَاحْفَظْنِي بِصَلَاحِ آبَائِي مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَدْرَأُ بِكَ‌[2] فِي نَحْرِهِ وَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْجَمَّالِ سِرْ ف

كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ص يَقُولُ‌ مَا أُبَالِي إِذَا قُلْتُ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَاتِ لَوِ اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيَّ الْجِنُّ وَ الْإِنْسُ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ بِاللَّهِ وَ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَ عَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ اللَّهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَ إِلَيْكَ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي وَ إِلَيْكَ أَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي وَ إِلَيْكَ فَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي اللَّه

“Ali ibn al-Husayn would say, ‘After saying these words, I will not be concerned at all even if all men and Jinn gather together against me: “In the name of Allah, with (assistance of) Allah, to Allah, in the way of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad a

كَانَ يَقُولُ عِنْدَ الْعِلَّةِ- اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَيَّرْتَ أَقْوَاماً فَقُلْتَ‌ قُلِ ادْعُوا الَّذِينَ‌ زَعَمْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ‌ فَلا يَمْلِكُونَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ وَ لا تَحْوِيلًا[1] فَيَا مَنْ لَا يَمْلِكُ كَشْفَ ضُرِّي وَ لَا تَحْوِيلَهُ عَنِّي أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ اكْشِفْ ضُرِّي وَ حَوِّلْهُ إِلَى مَنْ يَدْعُو مَعَكَ إِلَهاً آخَرَ لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ.

“For an ailment the Imam (a.s.) would say, ‘O Lord, You have criticized certain nations saying, “(Muhammad), tell them, ‘Seek help from those whom you consider equal to Allah. They are not able to remove or change your hardships’” (17:56) O the One besides whom no one is able to provide me relief or divert the hardship

مَرِضْتُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مَرَضاً شَدِيداً فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَكَتَبَ إِلَيَّ قَدْ بَلَغَنِي عِلَّتُكَ فَاشْتَرِ صَاعاً مِنْ بُرٍّ ثُمَّ اسْتَلْقِ عَلَى قَفَاكَ‌[2] وَ انْثُرْهُ عَلَى صَدْرِكَ كَيْفَمَا انْتَثَرَ وَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي إِذَا سَأَلَكَ بِهِ الْمُضْطَرُّ- كَشَفْتَ مَا بِهِ مِنْ ضُرٍّ وَ مَكَّنْتَ لَهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَ جَعَلْتَهُ خَلِيفَتَكَ عَلَى خَلْقِ

“I fell severely ill in Madiana and Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) had found out about it. He wrote to me, ‘Your ailment has come to our notice and you should buy one Sa’a (about 3 kg) of wheat, lie down on your back, pour it on your chest, as is done and say, “O Lord, I plead before You through Your name with which when a helpl

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَذَا الَّذِي قَدْ ظَهَرَ بِوَجْهِي يَزْعُمُ النَّاسُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَمْ يَبْتَلِ بِهِ عَبْداً لَهُ فِيهِ حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ لِي لَا لَقَدْ كَانَ مُؤْمِنُ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ مُكَنَّعَ الْأَصَابِعِ فَكَانَ يَقُولُ هَكَذَا وَ يَمُدُّ يَدَهُ وَ يَقُولُ- يا قَوْمِ اتَّبِعُوا الْمُرْسَلِينَ‌ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ الثُّلُثُ الْأَخِيرُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فِي أَوَّ

“Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) may Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, about this thing that has appeared on my face, people say that Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, does not allow it to cause suffering to one about whom He cares.’ The Imam said, ‘No, that is not so. تَضَعُ يَدَكَ عَلَى مَوْضِعِ الْوَجَعِ وَ تَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ الْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ الَّذِي‌ نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ‌ وَ هُوَ عِنْدَكَ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ عَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ أَنْ تَشْفِيَنِي بِشِفَائِكَ وَ تُدَاوِيَنِي بِدَوَائِكَ وَ تُعَافِيَنِي مِنْ بَلَائِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَ تُصَلِّي عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ.

“Place your hand over the painful area and say, ‘O Lord, I plead before You through the Holy Quran that the trusted Spirit brought (to Your Messenger) and it is before You in the original Book, high and full of wisdom, provide me cures with Your treatment, medication with Your medicine and good health from ailment You

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ الْعَقَارِبَ فَقَالَ انْظُرْ إِلَى بَنَاتِ نَعْشٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ الثَّلَاثَةِ الْوُسْطَى مِنْهَا بِجَنْبِهِ كَوْكَبٌ صَغِيرٌ قَرِيبٌ مِنْهُ تُسَمِّيهِ الْعَرَبُ السُّهَا وَ نَحْنُ نُسَمِّيهِ أَسْلَمَ أَحِدَّ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْهِ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ وَ قُلْ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ أَسْلَمَ‌[3] صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ فَرَجَهُمْ

“Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, I am afraid of scorpions. The Imam said, ‘Look at the little bear (Ursa Minor ) and of the three stars next to the middle one of them there is a small star. Arabs call it al-Suha’. يَسْأَلُهُ عُوذَةً لِلرِّيَاحِ الَّتِي تَعْرِضُ لِلصِّبْيَانِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ بِخَطِّهِ بِهَاتَيْنِ الْعُوذَتَيْنِ وَ زَعَمَ صَالِحٌ أَنَّهُ أَنْفَذَهُمَا إِلَيَّ إِبْرَاهِيمُ بِخَطِّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ‌ وَ لَا رَبَّ لِي إِلَّا اللَّهُ‌ لَهُ ال

Muhammad ibn Ja’far abu al-‘Abbas has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Salih ibn Sa’id from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Harun who wrote to abu Ja’iar (a.s.) asking for a supplication for protection of children against bothering gasses: “The Imam wrote in his own hand writing the following supplications for protect

مَنْ قَالَ فِي دُبُرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ- أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الْجَلِيلَ نَفْسِي وَ أَهْلِي وَ وُلْدِي وَ مَنْ يَعْنِينِي أَمْرُهُ‌[2] وَ أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ الْمَرْهُوبَ الْمَخُوفَ الْمُتَضَعْضِعَ لِعَظَمَتِهِ كُلُّ شَيْ‌ءٍ نَفْسِي وَ أَهْلِي وَ مَالِي وَ وُلْدِي وَ مَنْ يَعْنِينِي أَمْرُهُ حُفَّ بِجَنَاحٍ مِنْ أَجْنِحَةِ جَبْرَئِيلَ ع وَ حُفِظَ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَ أَهْلِهِ وَ مَالِهِ.

كَتَبَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَصِيرٍ[1] يَسْأَلُهُ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ لَهُ فِي أَسْفَلِ كِتَابِهِ دُعَاءً يُعَلِّمُهُ إِيَّاهُ يَدْعُو بِهِ فَيُعْصَمُ بِهِ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ جَامِعاً لِلدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ فَكَتَبَ ع بِخَطِّهِ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ* يَا مَنْ أَظْهَرَ الْجَمِيلَ وَ سَتَرَ الْقَبِيحَ وَ لَمْ يَهْتِكِ السِّتْرَ عَنِّي يَا كَرِيمَ الْعَفْوِ يَا حَسَنَ التَّجَاوُزِ يَا وَاسِعَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ يَا بَاسِطَ

“(I begin) in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, O the One who manifests the good things, hides the bad ones, does not rip apart the covering from me (my privacy), O magnanimous in pardoning, O the One who overlooks faults with grace, whose forgiveness is vast, whose hands are wide open with kindness, who

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع ابْتِدَاءً مِنْهُ‌ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ أَ مَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ص فَشَكَا الْإِبْطَاءَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْجَوَابِ فِي دُعَائِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ عَنِ الدُّعَاءِ السَّرِيعِ الْإِجَابَةِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ مَا هُوَ قَالَ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الْعَظِيمِ الْأَعْظَمِ الْأَجَلِّ الْأَكْرَمِ الْمَخْزُونِ الْمَكْنُونِ النُّورِ ال

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Mu’awiyah ibn ‘ Ammar who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) on his own initiation said to me, ‘O Mu’awiyah, bear in mind that a man once came to Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) complaining of the delay for the answer

أَمْلَى عَلَيَّ هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ- أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ هُوَ جَامِعٌ لِلدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ تَقُولُ بَعْدَ حَمْدِ اللَّهِ وَ الثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ- اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ‌ لا إِلهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ‌ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ وَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ* وَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ‌ الْواحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ* وَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ الْجَبَّ

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَ لَا تَخُصُّنِي بِدُعَاءٍ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ قُلْ- يَا وَاحِدُ يَا مَاجِدُ يَا أَحَدُ يَا صَمَدُ يَا مَنْ‌ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَ لَمْ يُولَدْ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ يَا عَزِيزُ يَا كَرِيمُ يَا حَنَّانُ يَا مَنَّانُ يَا سَامِعَ الدَّعَوَاتِ يَا أَجْوَدَ مَنْ سُئِلَ وَ يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ أَعْطَى يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ قُلْتُ‌ وَ لَقَدْ نادانا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ الْمُجِيبُون

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْ يَا مَنْ أَرْجُوهُ لِكُلِ‌ خَيْرٍ- وَ يَا مَنْ آمَنُ سَخَطَهُ‌[1] عِنْدَ كُلِّ عَثْرَةٍ وَ يَا مَنْ يُعْطِي بِالْقَلِيلِ الْكَثِيرَ يَا مَنْ أَعْطَى مَنْ سَأَلَهُ تَحَنُّناً مِنْهُ وَ رَحْمَةً يَا مَنْ أَعْطَى مَنْ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ وَ لَمْ يَعْرِفْهُ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَعْطِنِي بِمَسْأَلَتِي مِنْ جَمِيعِ خَيْرِ

‌ أَنَّهُ عَلَّمَ أَخَاهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ اللَّهُمَّ ارْفَعْ ظَنِّي صَاعِداً وَ لَا تُطْمِعْ فِيَّ عَدُوّاً وَ لَا حَاسِداً وَ احْفَظْنِي قَائِماً وَ قَاعِداً وَ يَقْظَاناً [يَقْظَانَ‌] وَ رَاقِداً اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَ ارْحَمْنِي وَ اهْدِنِي سَبِيلَكَ الْأَقْوَمَ وَ قِنِي حَرَّ جَهَنَّمَ وَ احْطُطْ عَنِّي الْمَغْرَمَ وَ الْمَأْثَمَ وَ اجْعَلْنِي مِنْ خَيْرِ خِيَارِ الْعَالَمِ‌[2]

أَخَذْتُ هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع قَالَ وَ كَانَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ يُسَمِّيهِ‌ الْجَامِعَ- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ* أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَ رَسُولُهُ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَ بِجَمِيعِ رُسُلِهِ وَ بِجَمِيعِ مَا أَنْزَلَ بِهِ‌[1] عَلَى جَمِيعِ الرُّسُلِ وَ أَنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَ لِقَاءَه

Ali has narrated from his father from ibn Mahbub from Hisham ibn Salim from abu Hamza who has said the following: “I acquired this supplication from abu Ja’far, Muhammad ibn Ali, recipient of divine supreme covenant. Abu Ja’far (a.s.) would call it al-Jami’ (comprehensive supplication): “In the name of Allah, the B

قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ أَنَا أَوَّلُ وَافِدٍ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الْجَبَّارِ- يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ كِتَابُهُ وَ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي ثُمَّ أُمَّتِي ثُمَّ أَسْأَلُهُمْ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَ بِأَهْلِ بَيْتِي.

“Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘I will be the first to arrive before the Majestic, the Almighty on the Day of Judgment, His book and my family, then my followers whom I will ask about what they have done to the book of Allah and my family.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يَرْجِعُ الْأَمْرُ وَ الْخِلَافَةُ إِلَى آلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَ عُمَرَ أَبَداً وَ لَا إِلَى بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ أَبَداً وَ لَا فِي وُلْدِ طَلْحَةَ وَ الزُّبَيْرِ أَبَداً وَ ذَلِكَ أَنَّهُمْ نَبَذُوا الْقُرْآنَ وَ أَبْطَلُوا السُّنَنَ وَ عَطَّلُوا الْأَحْكَامَ وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص- الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى مِنَ الضَّلَالِ وَ تِبْيَانٌ مِنَ الْعَمَى وَ اسْتِقَالَةٌ مِنَ الْعَثْرَ

Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from certain individuals of his people from al- Khashshab in a marfu’ manner from the Imam (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘I swear by Allah, Khilafat (leadership after the Holy Prophet) will never return to the family of abu Bakr and ‘Umar. مَنْ قَرَأَ آيَةً مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي صَلَاتِهِ قَائِماً يُكْتَبُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ حَرْفٍ مِائَةُ حَسَنَةٍ فَإِذَا قَرَأَهَا فِي غَيْرِ صَلَاةٍ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ حَرْفٍ- عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ وَ إِنِ اسْتَمَعَ الْقُرْآنَ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ حَرْفٍ حَسَنَةً وَ إِنْ خَتَمَ الْقُرْآنَ لَيْلًا صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ وَ إِنْ خَتَمَهُ نَهَاراً صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَفَظَ

“Al-Husayn ibn Ali (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever reads from the Holy Quran in his prayer in a standing position, Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, writes down for him the reward for one hundred good deeds for each letter and if one reads from the Holy Quran without being in prayer, Allah writes down for him the rewa

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذَا قَرَأْتُ الْقُرْآنَ فَرَفَعْتُ بِهِ صَوْتِي جَاءَنِي الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا تُرَائِي بِهَذَا أَهْلَكَ وَ النَّاسَ قَالَ يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ اقْرَأْ قِرَاءَةً مَا بَيْنَ الْقِرَاءَتَيْنِ تُسْمِعُ أَهْلَكَ وَ رَجِّعْ بِالْقُرْآنِ صَوْتَكَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يُحِبُّ الصَّوْتَ الْحَسَنَ يُرَجَّعُ فِيهِ تَرْجِيعاً.

“Once I said to abu Ja’far (a.s.) ‘When I read the Holy Quran, I raise my voice. Satan comes and says, “You are only showing this off to people and your family.’” The Imam said, ‘O abu Muhammad, read in a middle of the way reading, so your family may hear. مَنْ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ مَرَّةً بُورِكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ بُورِكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ بُورِكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ وَ عَلَى جِيرَانِهِ وَ مَنْ قَرَأَهَا اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ مَرَّةً بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ قَصْراً فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَيَقُولُ الْحَفَظَةُ اذْهَبُوا بِنَا إِلَى قُصُورِ أَخِينَا فُلَانٍ فَنَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا وَ مَنْ قَر

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Badr from Muhammad ibn Marwan from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Whoever reads Chapter 1 12 of the Holy Quran once receives blessings. لَمَّا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ أَنْ يَهْبِطْنَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ تَعَلَّقْنَ بِالْعَرْشِ‌[1] وَ قُلْنَ أَيْ رَبِّ إِلَى أَيْنَ تُهْبِطُنَا إِلَى أَهْلِ الْخَطَايَا وَ الذُّنُوبِ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَيْهِنَّ أَنِ اهْبِطْنَ فَوَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي لَا يَتْلُوكُنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ شِيعَتِهِمْ فِي دُبُرِ مَا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ إِلّ

“When Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, commanded certain verses of the Holy Quran to descend to earth, they clung to the Throne asking, ‘O Lord, why are You sending us to people of sins and evil deeds.’ Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, inspired them to descend saying, ‘I swear by My Majesty and Glory th

وَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّداً ص بِالْحَقِّ وَ أَكْرَمَ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ مَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ تَطْلُبُونَهُ مِنْ حِرْزٍ مِنْ حَرَقٍ أَوْ غَرَقٍ أَوْ سَرَقٍ أَوْ إِفْلَاتِ دَابَّةٍ مِنْ صَاحِبِهَا[2] أَوْ ضَالَّةٍ أَوْ آبِقٍ إِلَّا وَ هُوَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَمَنْ أَرَادَ ذَلِكَ فَلْيَسْأَلْنِي عَنْهُ قَالَ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَمَّا يُؤْمِنُ مِنَ الْحَرَقِ وَ الْغَرَقِ فَقَالَ

“I swear by the One who sent Muhammad (a.s.) with the truth and honored his family, all supplications for protection is in the Holy Quran. دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ الْبَيْتُ غَاصٌّ بِأَهْلِهِ فِيهِ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ وَ الشَّامِيُّ وَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْآفَاقِ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَوْضِعاً أَقْعُدُ فِيهِ فَجَلَسَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ كَانَ مُتَّكِئاً ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا شِيعَةَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ اعْلَمُوا أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَمْلِكْ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ غَضَبِهِ وَ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْسِنْ صُحْبَةَ مَنْ صَحِبَهُ وَ مُخَالَقَةَ مَنْ خَالَقَهُ وَ مُرَا

“Once I went in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) and the house was full of people. There were people from Khurasan, from al-Sham and from various horizons and I could not find a place to sit. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) sat in his place and he was leaning against a pillow. He said, ‘O Shi’a (followers) of the family of M

قَالَ لِي أَبِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا يَا بُنَيَّ انْظُرْ خَمْسَةً فَلَا تُصَاحِبْهُمْ وَ لَا تُحَادِثْهُمْ وَ لَا تُرَافِقْهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَتِ مَنْ هُمْ عَرِّفْنِيهِمْ قَالَ إِيَّاكَ وَ مُصَاحَبَةَ الْكَذَّابِ فَإِنَّهُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ السَّرَابِ يُقَرِّبُ لَكَ الْبَعِيدَ وَ يُبَعِّدُ لَكَ الْقَرِيبَ وَ إِيَّاكَ وَ مُصَاحَبَةَ الْفَاسِقِ فَإِنَّهُ بَائِعُكَ بِأُكْلَةٍ أ

“My father, Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) once said to me, ‘My son, look for five kinds of people. Do not befriend them, speak to or accompany them on a road.’ 1 then asked, ‘O father, who are they? Define them for me.’ He said, ‘Never befriend a liar; he is like a mirage. He shows what is far very near and what is near, in

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ ثَلَاثٌ يُصْفِينَ وُدَّ الْمَرْءِ لِأَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ يَلْقَاهُ بِالْبِشْرِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ وَ يُوَسِّعُ لَهُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ إِذَا جَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ وَ يَدْعُوهُ بِأَحَبِّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَيْهِ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Three things purify a Muslim’s love for his brother (in belief): meeting him in a cheerful manner, preparing for him a seat if he wants to sit down in a gathering, and calling him by his names that he loves most.’”

قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ إِذَا أَحْبَبْتَ أَحَداً مِنْ إِخْوَانِكَ فَأَعْلِمْهُ ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ع قَالَ‌ رَبِّ أَرِنِي كَيْفَ تُحْيِ الْمَوْتى‌ قالَ أَ وَ لَمْ تُؤْمِنْ قالَ بَلى‌ وَ لكِنْ لِيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِي‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) once said to me, ‘If you love one of your brothers (in belief), tell him about it; Ibrahim said, “O Lord, show me how do You bring the dead back to life?” The Lord asked, “Do you not believe it?” He said, “Yes, I firmly believe, but it is to comfort my heart . . (2:260)

إِذَا أَحْبَبْتَ رَجُلًا فَأَخْبِرْهُ بِذَلِكَ فَإِنَّهُ أَثْبَتُ لِلْمَوَدَّةِ بَيْنَكُمَا.

“When you love a man, tell him about it; it strengthens your love for one another.”

كَانَ عِنْدَهُ قَوْمٌ يُحَدِّثُهُمْ إِذْ ذَكَرَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا فَوَقَعَ فِيهِ‌[3] وَ شَكَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَّى لَكَ بِأَخِيكَ كُلِّهِ وَ أَيُّ الرِّجَالِ الْمُهَذَّبُ‌[4].

“Once in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) there were people speaking to him. One man mentioned the name of another man and he began to criticize him and complained against him. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) asked, ‘Where from can you have a perfect brother? Who is among man, free and pure of faults and flaws?”’

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لِلْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى أَخِيهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ وَ يَعُودَهُ إِذَا مَرِضَ وَ يَنْصَحَ لَهُ إِذَا غَابَ وَ يُسَمِّتَهُ‌[1] إِذَا عَطَسَ يَقُولَ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَ يَقُولَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَيُجِيبَهُ فَيَقُولَ لَهُ يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَ يُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ وَ يُجِيبَهُ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَ يَتْبَعَهُ إِذَا مَاتَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘One of the rights of a Muslim on his brother (in belief) is that on meeting him he should offer him the greeting of peace, visit him when he is ill, look after his interests in his absence and when sneezing one should say: “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, who has no pa

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ الرِّضَا ع فَعَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ عَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ ثُمَّ عَطَسَ فَقُلْتُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ وَ قُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِذَا عَطَسَ مِثْلُكَ‌[2] نَقُولُ لَهُ كَمَا يَقُولُ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ أَوْ كَمَا نَقُولُ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَ لَيْسَ تَقُولُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ ارْحَمْ مُحَمَّد

I said, ‘May Allah grant you al-Salat (favors).’ He sneezed again, and said, ‘May Allah grant you favors.’ He sneezed again and I said, ‘May Allah grant you favors.’ I then said, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, if one like you (Imam) would

عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ‌ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَلَمْ يُسَمِّتْهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ قَالَ نَقَصَنَا حَقَّنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* وَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَسَمَّتَهُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ.

“Once a man sneezed in the presence of abu Ja’far (a.s.) and he said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.) did not respond and said, ‘Our rights are reduced.’ Then he said, ‘Whenever anyone of you sneezes he should say, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds and Allah has granted al- Salat (favors

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع‌ إِنَّ النَّاسَ يَكْرَهُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ مَوَاطِنَ عِنْدَ الْعَطْسَةِ وَ عِنْدَ الذَّبِيحَةِ وَ عِنْدَ الْجِمَاعِ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع مَا لَهُمْ وَيْلَهُمْ نَافَقُوا لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ.

“Once I said to abu Ja’far (a.s.) ‘People do not like saying, “O Allah grant al-Salat, (favors) upon Muhammad and the AM al-Bay (family of Muhammad),” in three conditions: when sneezing, when slaughtering an animal and at the time of having intimate relations with their spouses.’ Abu Ja’far (a.s.) said, ‘What is wrong

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مَنْ سَمِعَ عَطْسَةً فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ صَلَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ص وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ لَمْ يَشْتَكِ عَيْنَيْهِ وَ لَا ضِرْسَهُ‌[1] ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنْ سَمِعْتَهَا فَقُلْهَا وَ إِنْ كَانَ بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَهُ الْبَحْرُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘If one hears a person’s sneezing and praises Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, and asks Allah to grant al-Salat (favors) upon Muhammad and the Ahl al-Bayt (family of Muhammad), he will not suffer from a toothache or eye trouble.’ The Imam then said, ‘When you hear it (sneezing)

مَنْ عَطَسَ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى قَصَبَةِ أَنْفِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ‌ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِينَ* الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْداً كَثِيراً كَمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ وَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ وَ آلِهِ وَ سَلَّمَ خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْخِرِهِ الْأَيْسَرِ طَائِرٌ أَصْغَرُ مِنَ الْجَرَادِ وَ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الذُّبَابِ حَتَّى يَسِيرَ تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ يَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.

“If one sneezes, places his hand over his nose and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, (all praise belongs to Allah), a great deal of praise, as He deserves, Allah has granted al-Salat (favors) and peace upon Muhammad, His Holy Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bay (family of Muhammad), a small flying thing,

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ مِنْ حَقِّ الدَّاخِلِ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ أَنْ يَمْشُوا مَعَهُ هُنَيْئَةً إِذَا دَخَلَ وَ إِذَا خَرَجَ وَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَلَى أَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ‌[2].

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘It is of the rights of a newcomer on the people of the house to gently escort him when entering and leaving.’ The Imam said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘When anyone enters the house of his brother (in belief), the host then is his commander until he leaves.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ مَنْ عَرَضَ لِأَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ الْمُتَكَلِّمِ فِي حَدِيثِهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَدَشَ وَجْهَهُ‌[1].

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘To one who disturbs the conversation of his Muslim brother it is like scratching his face.”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ كَيْفَ مُدَاعَبَةُ بَعْضِكُمْ بَعْضاً قُلْتُ قَلِيلٌ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا[3] فَإِنَّ الْمُدَاعَبَةَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ وَ إِنَّكَ لَتُدْخِلُ بِهَا السُّرُورَ عَلَى أَخِيكَ وَ لَقَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يُدَاعِبُ الرَّجُلَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَسُرَّهُ.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقُلْتُ لَهُ لِي جَارٌ يُؤْذِينِي فَقَالَ ارْحَمْهُ فَقُلْتُ لَا رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ فَصَرَفَ وَجْهَهُ عَنِّي قَالَ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَدَعَهُ فَقُلْتُ يَفْعَلُ بِي كَذَا وَ كَذَا وَ يَفْعَلُ بِي وَ يُؤْذِينِي فَقَالَ أَ رَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَاشَفْتَهُ انْتَصَفْتَ مِنْهُ‌[1] فَقُلْتُ بَلَى أُرْبِي عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ ذَا مِمَّنْ يَحْسُدُ النَّاسَ عَلى‌ ما آتاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ‌

“Once I went in the presence of Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) and said to him, ‘My neighbor causes me suffering.’ The Imam said, ‘Be kind to him.’ I said, ‘I wish Allah will not grant him any kindness.’ The Imam turned away from me and I did not like to leave him and I said, ‘He does this and that to me and keeps causing me to

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا أَحَبَّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمَ فَلْيَسْأَلْهُ عَنِ اسْمِهِ وَ اسْمِ أَبِيهِ وَ اسْمِ قَبِيلَتِهِ وَ عَشِيرَتِهِ فَإِنَّ مِنْ حَقِّهِ الْوَاجِبِ وَ صِدْقِ الْإِخَاءِ أَنْ يَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَ إِلَّا فَإِنَّهَا مَعْرِفَةُ حُمْقٍ.

“The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whoever loves his Muslim brother should ask what his name, the name of his father, his tribe and family is. It is of necessary rights and truthful brotherhood (friendship) to ask such questions; otherwise, it is a foolish recognition.’”

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع يَقُولُ‌ لَا تُذْهِبِ الْحِشْمَةَ بَيْنَكَ وَ بَيْنَ أَخِيكَ أَبْقِ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّ ذَهَابَهَا ذَهَابُ الْحَيَاءِ.

“I heard abu al-Hassan Musa saying, ‘Keep your decorum intact between yourself and your brother (friend) and preserve it; removal is the elimination of bashfulness.’”

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ لَا تَثِقْ بِأَخِيكَ كُلَّ الثِّقَةِ فَإِنَّ صَرْعَةَ الِاسْتِرْسَالِ لَنْ تُسْتَقَالَ‌[1].

‘Do not trust your brother (friend) in totality; a sudden fall of attachment is never repairable.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَبْدَأُ بِالرَّجُلِ فِي الْكِتَابِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْفَضْلِ يَبْدَأُ الرَّجُلُ بِأَخِيهِ يُكْرِمُهُ.

“Once I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about a man who initiates writing to another man. The Imam said, ‘It is not an offense. It is an excellent act when a man initiates honoring his brother (in belief).”’

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْمَاءُ يُطَهِّرُ وَ لَا يُطَهَّرُ.

“Abu ’Abd Allah, Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Water cleanses but it is not cleanable.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قُطِعَتْ يَدُهُ مِنَ الْمِرْفَقِ كَيْفَ يَتَوَضَّأُ قَالَ يَغْسِلُ مَا بَقِيَ مِنْ عَضُدِهِ.

“I asked my brother, Musa ibn Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man whose hand is cut off from the elbow. How he should take Wudu’? He (the Imam) said, ‘He must wash what is left of his arm.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ‌[4] عَنْ جَارِيَةٍ حَاضَتْ أَوَّلَ حَيْضِهَا فَدَامَ دَمُهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَ هِيَ لَا تَعْرِفُ أَيَّامَ أَقْرَائِهَا فَقَالَ أَقْرَاؤُهَا مِثْلُ أَقْرَاءِ نِسَائِهَا- فَإِنْ كَانَتْ نِسَاؤُهَا مُخْتَلِفَاتٍ فَأَكْثَرُ جُلُوسِهَا عَشَرَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَ أَقَلُّهُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about the case of a girl who experiences blood discharge for the first time. It continues for three months and she does not know the duration the discharge-free time of her Hayd (menses). He (the Imam) said, ‘Her discharge-free time is like those of the women from her relatives. If
