سَأَلْتُ الرِّضَا ع عَنْ جُلُودِ الْخَزِّ فَقَالَ هُوَ ذَا نَلْبَسُ الْخَزَّ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ ذَاكَ الْوَبَرُ فَقَالَ إِذَا حَلَّ وَبَرُهُ حَلَّ جِلْدُهُ.

“I once asked al-Rida’ (a.s.), about the al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al-Khazz that we wear.’ I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, that is fur.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If its fur is lawful so also is its skin.’”

أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَلْبَسَ الْقَمِيصَ الْمَكْفُوفَ بِالدِّيبَاجِ وَ يَكْرَهُ لِبَاسَ الْحَرِيرِ وَ لِبَاسَ الْقَسِّيِّ الْوَشْيِ‌[2] وَ يَكْرَهُ لِبَاسَ الْمِيثَرَةِ الْحَمْرَاءِ فَإِنَّهَا مِيثَرَةُ إِبْلِيسَ‌[3].

“Al-Hassan ibn Qiyaman once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a garment with its weft of al-Qazz and cotton in which al-Qazz is more than half: if one can use for Salat (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), had such a gown.’”

لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تَلْبَسَ الْحَرِيرَ الْمَحْضَ وَ هِيَ مُحْرِمَةٌ وَ أَمَّا فِي الْحَرِّ وَ الْبَرْدِ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not proper for a woman to wear garments of all silk in the state of Ihram, however, in hot or cold weather it is not harmful.’”

إِنَّ عَلِيّاً ع‌ كَانَ عِنْدَكُمْ فَأَتَى بَنِي دِيوَانٍ‌[1] وَ اشْتَرَى ثَلَاثَةَ أَثْوَابٍ بِدِينَارٍ الْقَمِيصَ إِلَى فَوْقِ الْكَعْبِ وَ الْإِزَارَ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ وَ الرِّدَاءَ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ إِلَى ثَدْيَيْهِ وَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ إِلَى أَلْيَتَيْهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ يَدَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا كَسَاهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَذَا اللِّبَاسُ الَّذِي يَنْبَغِي

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin who lived among you once went to banu Diwan and bought three pieces of clothes for one dinar. One piece was a shirt, which in its length reached above his ankles, a loincloth, which in length reached to the middle of his leg, a gown that reached in his front side up

أَمَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ لَهُ إِزَاراً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي لَسْتُ أُصِيبُ إِلَّا وَاسِعاً قَالَ اقْطَعْ مِنْهُ وَ كُفَّهُ‌[3] قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي قَالَ وَ مَا جَاوَزَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ فَفِي النَّارِ. - مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ‌ مِثْلَهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once commanded me to buy a loincloth for him. I said that I could only find wide ones. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must cut it and stitch its borders.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘My father has said, “Whatever of loincloth passes down the ankles is in the fire.’” Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from

قَالَ لِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِنَبِيِّهِ ص- وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ وَ كَانَتْ ثِيَابُهُ طَاهِرَةً وَ إِنَّمَا أَمَرَهُ بِالتَّشْمِيرِ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once said to me, ‘Allah, most Blessed, most High, has said, to His Holy Prophet, ‘. . . and your clothes cleanse them,’ (74:4) his clothes were clean but He commanded him to raise them instead of keeping them long (that drag on the ground).”’

نَظَرَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع إِلَى فَتًى مُرْخٍ إِزَارَهُ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ ارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ فَإِنَّهُ أَبْقَى لِثَوْبِكَ وَ أَنْقَى لِقَلْبِكَ.

“’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), once saw a young man with his loincloths hanging low, and said to him, ‘Son, you must raise your loincloth; it will last longer and help clean your heart (from arrogance).”’

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin when wearing a shirt would extend his hands. If the sleeves reached his fingers he would cut them short.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once asked me, ‘Do you like to see the shirt of ’Amir al- Mu’minin, Ali (a.s.) in which he sustained the injury, to show his blood (stain)?’ I replied, ‘Yes, I like to see it.’ He (the Imam) asked for it and it was brought in a basket. رَأَيْتُ قَمِيصَ عَلِيٍّ ع الَّذِي قُتِلَ فِيهِ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَإِذَا أَسْفَلُهُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شِبْراً وَ بَدَنُهُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَشْبَارٍ وَ رَأَيْتُ فِيهِ نَضْحَ دَمٍ.

“I saw the shirt of Ali (a.s.), in which he was mortally wounded. It was with abu Ja‘far (a.s.), its bottom measured twelve shibr and around his body it was three shibr and I saw marks of blood splashed on it.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع يَا بُنَيَّ أَ لَا تُطَهِّرُ قَمِيصَكَ فَذَهَبَ فَظَنَنَّا أَنَّ ثَوْبَهُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ شَيْ‌ءٌ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ هَكَذَا فَقُلْنَا جَعَلَنَا اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ مَا لِقَمِيصِهِ قَالَ كَانَ قَمِيصُهُ طَوِيلًا وَ أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ يُقَصِّرَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ- وَ ثِيابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ.

“I once was with abu Ja‘far, when abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), came. Abu Ja‘far, said, ‘You must cleanse your shirt.’ He left and we thought his shirt might have come in contact with something unclean. He came back and he (the Imam) said, ‘It just is as it was.’ We then asked saying, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in se

“I once was with abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for a piece of cloth. He (the Imam) took five yards from it, cut it, then measured it with his shibr and in width it was six shibr. He (the Imam) then asked to stitch its borders and trim its edges.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَلْبَسُ الثَّوْبَ الْجَدِيدَ قَالَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ ثَوْبَ يُمْنٍ وَ تُقًى وَ بَرَكَةٍ اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي فِيهِ حُسْنَ عِبَادَتِكَ وَ عَمَلًا بِطَاعَتِكَ وَ أَدَاءَ شُكْرِ نِعْمَتِكَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي وَ أَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ.

“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the case of a man who wears new clothes. He (the Imam) said, ’He must say, ‘O Lord, make it the dress of good fortune and blessings. سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ع يَقُولُ‌ قَدْ يَنْبَغِي لِأَحَدِكُمْ إِذَا لَبِسَ الثَّوْبَ الْجَدِيدَ أَنْ يُمِرَّ يَدَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ يَقُولَ- الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي مَا أُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي وَ أَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ وَ أَتَزَيَّنُ بِهِ بَيْنَهُمْ.

Tt is very proper for you when wearing a piece of new clothes to wipe it with your hand and say, “All praise belongs to Allah who has dressed me with something whereby I cover my privacy, beautify and decorate myself before the people.’”

“I once wanted to visit abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). I dressed up and spread my Taylisan (pallium) which was new and I liked it very much. “Once certain person of his people came to him (the Imam) and he saw on him (the Imam) a shirt with a patch stitched on it and he kept looking at it. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘What is the matter; what are you looking at?’ He replied, ‘I look at the patch stitched on your shirt.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Pick up this bo

مَنْ تَعَمَّمَ وَ لَمْ يَتَحَنَّكْ فَأَصَابَهُ دَاءٌ لَا دَوَاءَ لَهُ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ.

“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘One who wears a turban without tahannak (allowing one end to hang down on one’s front side and the other end down one’s back side), if he faces an illness without cure he then must not blame anyone for it except his own-self.’”

Jibril wore a turban and hanged down one end on his front side and the other end down his back.’”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ الْعَمَائِمُ تِيجَانُ الْعَرَبِ. - وَ رُوِيَ‌ أَنَّ الطَّابِقِيَّةَ عِمَّةُ إِبْلِيسَ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ‌[1].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Turbans are the crown of Arabs.’” And it has been narrated that the Tabiqiyya is the turban of Iblis, may Allah curse him.

مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ مُعْتَمّاً تَحْتَ حَنَكِهِ يُرِيدُ سَفَراً لَمْ يُصِبْهُ فِي سَفَرِهِ سَرَقٌ وَ لَا حَرَقٌ وَ لَا مَكْرُوهٌ.
