كُلْ مِنْهُ وَ إِنْ وَقَعَ فِي الْمَاءِ مِنْ رَمْيَتِكَ فَمَاتَ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْهُ. - عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ‌- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the case of a man who shoots a prey on a mountain or wall. The arrow pierces into it and it dies. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can

سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ع يَقُولُ‌ إِذَا ضَرَبَ صَاحِبُ الشَّبَكَةِ بِالشَّبَكَةِ فَمَا أَصَابَ فِيهَا مِنْ حَيٍّ أَوْ مَيِّتٍ فَهُوَ حَلَالٌ مَا خَلَا مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ وَ لَا يُؤْكَلُ الطَّافِي مِنَ السَّمَكِ‌[3].

Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘I heard my father saying, “If a man sets a fishing net whatever is caught in it dead or alive is lawful for food, except that which does not have scales and the dead fish floating on the water.’””

بَيْنَا نَحْنُ قُعُودٌ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ مَرَّ رَجُلٌ بِيَدِهِ خُطَّافٌ مَذْبُوحٌ فَوَثَبَ إِلَيْهِ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع حَتَّى أَخَذَهُ مِنْ يَدِهِ ثُمَّ دَحَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ‌[4] فَقَالَ ع أَ عَالِمُكُمْ أَمَرَكُمْ بِهَذَا أَمْ فَقِيهُكُمْ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص نَهَى عَنْ قَتْلِ السِّتَّةِ مِنْهَا الْخُطَّافُ وَ قَالَ إِنَّ دَوَرَانَهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ أَسَفاً لِمَا ف

“As we were sitting with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), a man passed by with a slaughtered khuttaf in his hand. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), quickly got up, took it from his hand and threw it away saying, ’Has your scholar or your faqih commanded you to kill it? سَأَلْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- أُحِلَّتْ لَكُمْ بَهِيمَةُ الْأَنْعامِ‌[1] فَقَالَ الْجَنِينُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ إِذَا أَشْعَرَ وَ أَوْبَرَ فَذَكَاتُهُ ذَكَاةُ أُمِّهِ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي عَنَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ.

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الْحُوَارِ[2] تُذَكَّى أُمُّهُ أَ يُؤْكَلُ بِذَكَاتِهَا فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ تَمَاماً وَ نَبَتَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّعْرُ فَكُلْ. - عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ‌ الْحُصَيْنِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ.

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الشَّاةِ يَذْبَحُهَا وَ فِي بَطْنِهَا وَلَدٌ وَ قَدْ أَشْعَرَ فَقَالَ ع ذَكَاتُهُ ذَكَاةُ أُمِّهِ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a sheep which is slaughtered and its young, which has grown its wool, is found inside. He (the Imam) said, ‘Slaughtering for it is the slaughtering of its mother.’”

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْغَنَمُ يُرْسَلُ فِيهَا- الْيَهُودِيُّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيُّ فَتَعْرِضُ فِيهَا الْعَارِضَةُ فَيَذْبَحُ أَ نَأْكُلُ ذَبِيحَتَهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لَا تُدْخِلْ ثَمَنَهَا مَالَكَ وَ لَا تَأْكُلْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الِاسْمُ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى- الْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيّ

دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَقُلْنَا لَهُ جَعَلَنَا اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ لَنَا خُلَطَاءَ مِنَ النَّصَارَى وَ إِنَّا نَأْتِيهِمْ فَيَذْبَحُونَ لَنَا الدَّجَاجَ وَ الْفِرَاخَ وَ الْجِدَاءَ[1] أَ فَنَأْكُلُهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلُوهَا وَ لَا تَقْرَبُوهَا فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ عَلَى ذَبَائِحِهِمْ مَا لَا أُحِبُّ لَكُمْ أَكْلَهَا قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْكُوفَةَ دَعَانَا بَعْضُهُمْ فَ

رَأَيْتُ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلًا يَسْأَلُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِي أَخاً فَيُسْلِفُ فِي الْغَنَمِ فِي الْجِبَالِ فَيُعْطِي السِّنَّ مَكَانَ السِّنِ‌[2] فَقَالَ أَ لَيْسَ بِطِيبَةِ نَفْسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَلَا بَأْسَ قَالَ فَإِنَّهُ يَكُونُ لَهُ فِيهَا الْوَكِيلُ فَيَكُونُ يَهُودِيّاً أَوْ نَصْرَانِيّاً فَتَقَعُ فِيهَا الْعَارِضَةُ فَيَبِيعُهَا مَذْبُوحَةً وَ يَأْتِيهِ بِثَمَنِهَا وَ رُبَّمَا مَلَّحَهَا فَيَأْت

إِنَّ أَبِي ص أَتَاهُ أَخُوهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ يَسْتَأْذِنُ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ وَ وَاصِلٍ وَ بَشِيرٍ الرَّحَّالِ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمْ فَلَمَّا جَلَسُوا قَالَ مَا مِنْ شَيْ‌ءٍ إِلَّا وَ لَهُ حَدٌّ يَنْتَهِي إِلَيْهِ فَجِي‌ءَ بِالْخِوَانِ فَوُضِعَ فَقَالُوا فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ قَدْ وَ اللَّهِ اسْتَمْكَنَّا مِنْهُ فَقَالُوا يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ هَذَا الْخِوَانُ مِنَ الشَّيْ‌ءِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قَالُوا فَمَا حَدُّهُ

They sat down. He (the Imam) said, ‘For everything there is a limit where it ends.’ They brought food and it was made availa

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّا نُرْوَى عِنْدَنَا عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى يُبْغِضُ الْبَيْتَ اللَّحِمَ فَقَالَ ع كَذَبُوا إِنَّمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْبَيْتَ الَّذِي يَغْتَابُونَ فِيهِ النَّاسَ وَ يَأْكُلُونَ لُحُومَهُمْ وَ قَدْ كَانَ أَبِي ع لَحِماً[3] وَ لَقَدْ مَاتَ يَوْمَ مَاتَ وَ فِي كُمِّ أُمِّ وَلَدِهِ ثَلَاثُونَ دِرْهَماً لِلَّحْمِ.

تَغَدَّيْتُ مَعَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَأُتِيَ بِقَطَاةٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ مُبَارَكٌ وَ كَانَ أَبِي ع يُعْجِبُهُ وَ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ أَنْ يُطْعَمَ صَاحِبَ الْيَرَقَانِ يُشْوَى لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْفَعُهُ.

قَالَ يَوْماً يَا مُعَتِّبُ اطْلُبْ لَنَا حِيتَاناً طَرِيَّةً فَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَحْتَجِمَ فَطَلَبْتُهَا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَقَالَ لِي يَا مُعَتِّبُ سَكْبِجْ‌[1] لَنَا شَطْرَهَا وَ اشْوِ لَنَا شَطْرَهَا فَتَغَدَّى مِنْهَا وَ تَعَشَّى أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ع. - عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعاً عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ ب

Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hamadaniy from Mu‘attib who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, or abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, once said, ‘O Mu‘attib, order for us fresh fish; I want to apply cupping.’ I ordered fish and brought them. شَكَا إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ الْوَبَاءَ فَقَالَ لَهُ وَ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ عَنِ الطَّيِّبِ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ مَا الطَّيِّبُ الْمُبَارَكُ فَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانِيُّكُمْ هَذَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ السُّكَّرَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ع.

He (the Imam) said, ‘What you need is the fine and blessed.’ I then asked, ‘What is the fine and blessed?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It i

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع لِأَبِي يَا بَشِيرُ بِأَيِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ تُدَاوُونَ مَرْضَاكُمْ فَقَالَ بِهَذِهِ الْأَدْوِيَةِ الْمِرَارِ فَقَالَ لَهُ لَا إِذَا مَرِضَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَخُذِ السُّكَّرَ الْأَبْيَضَ فَدُقَّهُ وَ صُبَّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ الْبَارِدَ وَ اسْقِهِ إِيَّاهُ فَإِنَّ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشِّفَاءَ فِي الْمَرَارَةِ قَادِرٌ أَنْ يَجْعَلَهُ فِي الْحَلَاوَةِ.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَقُولُ‌ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى لَمَّا عَافَى أَيُّوبَ ع نَظَرَ إِلَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ قَدِ ازْدَرَعَتْ‌[1] فَرَفَعَ طَرْفَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَ قَالَ إِلَهِي وَ سَيِّدِي عَبْدُكَ أَيُّوبُ الْمُبْتَلَى عَافَيْتَهُ وَ لَمْ يَزْدَرِعْ شَيْئاً وَ هَذَا لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ زَرْعٌ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَيْهِ يَا أَيُّوبُ خُذْ مِنْ سُبْحَتِكَ كَفّاً فَابْذُرْهُ

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from fadalah from Rifa‘ah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘When Allah, most Blessed, most High, granted good health to Ayyub (a.s.), he looked to the Israelites who had their plantations.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ تَمْرٌ بَرْنِيٌّ وَ هُوَ مُجِدٌّ فِي أَكْلِهِ يَأْكُلُهُ بِشَهْوَةٍ فَقَالَ لِي يَا سُلَيْمَانُ ادْنُ فَكُلْ قَالَ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ فَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ وَ أَنَا أَقُولُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي أَرَاكَ تَأْكُلُ هَذَا التَّمْرَ بِشَهْوَةٍ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ إِنِّي لَأُحِبُّهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ لِمَ ذَاكَ قَالَ لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص كَانَ تَمْرِيّاً وَ كَانَ

“Once I visited abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), and there were barniy dates in front of him. He (the Imam) seemed assiduous in eating it with zest. He (the Imam) said, ‘O Sulayman come close and eat.’ I then went close and ate thereof saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I see you eat it

الْعَجْوَةُ هِيَ أُمُّ التَّمْرِ الَّتِي أَنْزَلَهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لآِدَمَ ع مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ.

‘al-‘Ajxvah is the mother of dates which Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent for Adam from paradise.’”

الْعَجْوَةُ أُمُّ التَّمْرِ وَ هِيَ الَّتِي أَنْزَلَهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ لآِدَمَ ع وَ هُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- ما قَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ لِينَةٍ أَوْ تَرَكْتُمُوها قائِمَةً عَلى‌ أُصُولِها[1] قَالَ يَعْنِي الْعَجْوَةَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘al-‘Ajwah is the mother of dates. It is the date that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, sent from paradise for Adam (a.s.), as mentioned in His words, ‘. . . whatever you cut down of palm trees and left standing on their trunks’ is a reference to al-‘Ajwah.’”

كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع يُعْجِبُهُ الْعِنَبُ فَكَانَ يَوْماً صَائِماً فَلَمَّا أَفْطَرَ كَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا جَاءَ الْعِنَبُ أَتَتْهُ أُمُّ وَلَدٍ لَهُ بِعُنْقُودِ عِنَبٍ فَوَضَعَتْهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَجَاءَ سَائِلٌ فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَيْهِ فَدَسَّتْ‌[2] أُمُّ وَلَدِهِ إِلَى السَّائِلِ فَاشْتَرَتْهُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ أَتَتْهُ بِهِ فَوَضَعَتْهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَجَاءَ سَائِلٌ آخَرُ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ فَفَعَلَتْ أُمُّ ال

“Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, liked grapes. One day he fasted and when it was the time to break his fast, the first thing that was brought to him was grapes. A mother of his child brought a bunch of grapes and placed before him. A beggar came and he (the Imam) give it to him. The mother of his child managed to

ذُكِرَ الرُّمَّانُ الْحُلْوُ فَقَالَ الْمُزُّ أَصْلَحُ فِي الْبَطْنِ. - مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ صَبِيحٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ مِثْلَهُ.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid from al-Walid ibn Sabih who has said the following: “Once sweet pomegranate was mentioned and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘Sour-sweet pomegranate is more suitable for the stomach.’” Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع بِمِنًى وَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِي ع عَلَى فَخِذِهِ وَ هُوَ يُقَشِّرُ لَهُ مَوْزاً وَ يُطْعِمُهُ.

نِعْمَ الْبَقْلُ الْهِنْدَبَاءُ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا وَ عَلَيْهَا قَطْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَكُلُوهَا وَ لَا تَنْفُضُوهَا عِنْدَ أَكْلِهَا قَالَ وَ كَانَ أَبِي ع يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَنْفُضَهُ إِذَا أَكَلْنَاهُ.

‘The endive is a very good herb. On every one of its leaves there is a drop of paradise, so you should eat it and do not shake it off when eating.’ He (the Imam) has said, ’My father (a.s.), prohibited us from shaking off when we were eating it.’”

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ كُلُوا الْهِنْدَبَاءَ فَمَا مِنْ صَبَاحٍ إِلَّا وَ تَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهَا قَطْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا أَكَلْتُمُوهَا فَلَا تَنْفُضُوهَا قَالَ وَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع كَانَ أَبِي ع يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَنْفُضَهَا إِذَا أَكَلْنَاهَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘You should eat endives. Every morning one drop descends on it from paradise and when you eat it do not shake it off.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘My father (a.s.), prohibited us from shaking off when we ate endives.’”

أَخَذَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُوسَى فَأَمَرَ فَوُجِئَ فَمِي‌[1] فَتَزَعْزَعَتْ أَسْنَانِي فَلَا أَقْدِرُ أَنْ أَمْضَغَ الطَّعَامَ فَرَأَيْتُ أَبِي فِي الْمَنَامِ وَ مَعَهُ شَيْخٌ لَا أَعْرِفُهُ فَقَالَ أَبِي رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ سَلِّمْ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَهْ مَنْ هُوَ فَقَالَ هَذَا أَبُو شَيْبَةَ الْخُرَاسَانِيُ‌[2] قَالَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا لِي أَرَاكَ هَكَذَا قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّ الْفَاسِقَ الْعَبَّاسَ

“Al-‘ Abbas ibn Musa took me and commanded to hit my mouth, so my teeth became shaky and I could not chew food. I then saw my father in my dream. There was an old man with him whom I could not recognize. My father, may Allah grant him mercy, said to me to offer greeting of peace to him.’ I then asked, ‘Father, who is h

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ.

“Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

كَانَ أَبِي ع يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَتَدَاوَى بِالْمَاءِ الْمُرِّ وَ بِمَاءِ الْكِبْرِيتِ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ نُوحاً ع لَمَّا كَانَ الطُّوفَانُ دَعَا الْمِيَاهَ فَأَجَابَتْهُ كُلُّهَا إِلَّا الْمَاءَ الْمُرَّ وَ مَاءَ الْكِبْرِيتِ فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِمَا وَ لَعَنَهُمَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father, Alayhi al-Salam, disliked seeking cures from bitter water and water of sulfur and would say, ‘Noah, Alayhi al-Salam, in the days of the flood called the waters and all of them answered except bitter water and sulfur water, so he prayed against them.’”

إِنَّهُ لَمَّا احْتُضِرَ أَبِي ع قَالَ لِي يَا بُنَيَّ إِنَّهُ لَا يَنَالُ شَفَاعَتَنَا مَنِ اسْتَخَفَّ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَ لَا يَرِدُ عَلَيْنَا الْحَوْضَ مَنْ أَدْمَنَ هَذِهِ الْأَشْرِبَةَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَهْ وَ أَيَّ الْأَشْرِبَةِ فَقَالَ كُلَّ مُسْكِرٍ.

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said, ‘When my father was about to pass away he said to me, ‘My son, our intercession will not apply to those who take their Salat (prayer) lightly and the addicts of these drinks will not be able to come to us at the pond. I then asked, ‘What are these drinks, O father?’ He (the Imam) said,

مَا عُصِيَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِشَيْ‌ءٍ أَشَدَّ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْخَمْرِ إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ لَيَدَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْفَرِيضَةَ وَ يَثِبُ عَلَى أُمِّهِ وَ أُخْتِهِ وَ ابْنَتِهِ وَ هُوَ لَا يَعْقِلُ.

“One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Allah is not disobeyed by anything more severely than by drinking wine. One of them may neglect obligatory Salat (prayer), fall on his mother, sister or daughter when drunk and be devoid of reason.’”

دَخَلَتْ أُمُّ خَالِدٍ الْعَبْدِيَّةُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَتْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّهُ يَعْتَرِينِي قَرَاقِرُ فِي بَطْنِي- [فَسَأَلَتْهُ عَنْ أَعْلَالِ النِّسَاءِ وَ قَالَتْ‌] وَ قَدْ وَصَفَ لِي أَطِبَّاءُ الْعِرَاقِ النَّبِيذَ بِالسَّوِيقِ وَ قَدْ وَقَفْتُ وَ عَرَفْتُ كَرَاهَتَكَ لَهُ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَ مَا يَمْنَعُكِ عَنْ شُرْبِهِ قَالَتْ قَدْ

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) when the mother of Khalid al-‘Abdiyah visited him (the Imam). She said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. I have a growling condition in my belly [I asked a women with such condition about it and she said] the physicians of Iraq have prescribed for her al

فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا لَكَ وَ لِمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ رَسُولُهُ ص يَقُولُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثاً عَلَيْكَ بِهَذَا الْمَرِيسِ الَّذِي تَمْرُسُهُ‌[1] بِالْعَشِيِّ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَمْرُسُهُ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَ تَشْرَبُهُ بِالْعَشِيِّ فَقَالَ لَهُ هَذَا يَنْفُخُ الْبَطْنَ قَالَ لَهُ فَأَدُلُّكَ عَلَى مَا هُوَ أَنْفَعُ لَكَ مِنْ هَذَا عَلَيْكَ بِالدُّعَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ قَالَ فَقُل

Nothing suits me except drinking al-Nabidh? He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘What do you ha

سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع مَا تَقُولُ فِي النَّبِيذِ فَإِنَّ أَبَا مَرْيَمَ يَشْرَبُهُ وَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ أَمَرْتَهُ بِشُرْبِهِ فَقَالَ صَدَقَ أَبُو مَرْيَمَ سَأَلَنِي عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّهُ حَلَالٌ وَ لَمْ يَسْأَلْنِي عَنِ الْمُسْكِرِ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ع إِنَّ الْمُسْكِرَ مَا اتَّقَيْتُ فِيهِ أَحَداً سُلْطَاناً وَ لَا غَيْرَهُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص كُلُّ مُسْكِرٍ حَ

“I once heard a man who asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘What do you say about al-Nabidh? Abu Maryam drinks it and he thinks that you have commanded him to drink. ’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Abu Maryam has spoken the truth. He asked me about al-Nabidh but not about intoxicating liquor.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Intoxicating

كَانَ عِنْدَ أَبِي قَوْمٌ فَاخْتَلَفُوا فِي النَّبِيذِ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ الْقَدَحُ الَّذِي يُسْكِرُ هُوَ حَرَامٌ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ قَلِيلُ مَا أَسْكَرَ وَ كَثِيرُهُ حَرَامٌ فَرَدُّوا الْأَمْرَ إِلَى أَبِي ع فَقَالَ أَبِي أَ رَأَيْتُمُ الْقِسْطَ[3] لَوْ لَا مَا يُطْرَحُ فِيهِ أَوَّلًا كَانَ يَمْتَلِئُ وَ كَذَلِكَ الْقَدَحُ الْآخَرُ لَوْ لَا الْأَوَّلُ مَا أَسْكَرَ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ ع إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ مَ

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَ أُمِّي إِنَّنِي أَدْخُلُ كَنِيفاً لِي وَ لِي جِيرَانٌ عِنْدَهُمْ جَوَارٍ يَتَغَنَّيْنَ وَ يَضْرِبْنَ بِالْعُودِ فَرُبَّمَا أَطَلْتُ الْجُلُوسَ اسْتِمَاعاً مِنِّي لَهُنَّ فَقَالَ لَا تَفْعَلْ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَ اللَّهِ مَا آتِيهِنَّ إِنَّمَا هُوَ سَمَاعٌ أَسْمَعُهُ بِأُذُنِي فَقَالَ لِلَّهِ أَنْتَ أَ مَا سَمِعْتَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُول

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الشِّطْرَنْجِ الَّتِي يَلْعَبُ بِهَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَنْ كَانَ نَاطِقاً فَكَانَ مَنْطِقُهُ لِغَيْرِ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ كَانَ لَاغِياً وَ مَنْ كَانَ صَامِتاً فَكَانَ صَمْتُهُ لِغَيْرِ ذِكْرِ اللَّ

نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص عَنِ اللَّعِبِ بِالشِّطْرَنْجِ وَ النَّرْدِ.

17. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited playing with chess and dice.’”
