Prayer

إِذَا أَدْرَكْتَ الْإِمَامَ قَدْ رَكَعَ فَكَبَّرْتَ وَ رَكَعْتَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكْتَ الرَّكْعَةَ فَإِنْ رَفَعَ الْإِمَامُ رَأْسَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَرْكَعَ فَقَدْ فَاتَتْكَ الرَّكْعَةُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If you join the Imam for one Rak‘at, say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description). You must perform Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) before he raises his head (from Ruku‘). You have joined for one Rak‘at but if he raises his head before you are in Ruku‘, you have missed one Rak‘at

قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع‌ فِي الرَّجُلِ إِذَا أَدْرَكَ الْإِمَامَ وَ هُوَ رَاكِعٌ فَكَبَّرَ وَ هُوَ مُقِيمٌ صُلْبَهُ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ الْإِمَامُ رَأْسَهُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If a man finds the Imam in Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees), says Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) while his back is straight and performs Ruku‘ before the Imam raises his head, has joined for one Rak‘at.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَأْتِي الْمَسْجِدَ وَ هُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَ قَدْ سَبَقَهُ الْإِمَامُ بِرَكْعَةٍ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ فَيَعْتَلُّ الْإِمَامُ فَيَأْخُذُ بِيَدِهِ فَيَكُونُ أَدْنَى الْقَوْمِ إِلَيْهِ فَيُقَدِّمُهُ‌[1] فَقَالَ يُتِمُّ صَلَاةَ الْقَوْمِ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ حَتَّى إِذَا فَرَغُوا مِنَ التَّشَهُّدِ أَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِيَدِهِ‌[2] عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَ الشِّمَالِ فَكَانَ الَّذِي أَوْمَأَ إِ

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who comes to Masjid when they are in Salah (prayer) and the Imam is one Rak‘at ahead or more. The Imam faces a problem and holds his hand when he is the closest to him and makes him to lead. He (the Imam) said, ‘He completes Salah (prayer) of the people, then sits down u

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع رَجُلٌ دَخَلَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ وَ هُوَ لَا يَنْوِيهَا صَلَاةً فَأَحْدَثَ إِمَامُهُمْ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ فَقَدَّمَهُ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ أَ يُجْزِئُهُمْ صَلَاتُهُمْ بِصَلَاتِهِ وَ هُوَ لَا يَنْوِيهَا صَلَاةً فَقَالَ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ وَ هُوَ لَا يَنْوِيهَا صَلَاةً بَلْ يَنْبَغِي لَهُ أَنْ يَنْوِيَهَا صَلَاةً فَإِنْ كَانَ قَ

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about a man who comes to a people during their Salah (prayer) and he is not intending it to be Salah (prayer). Their Imam faces invalidation of his Wudu’ and holds the hand of this man and makes him to lead. He performs Salah (prayer) with them. Is his Salah (prayer) sufficient to compl

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَمَّ قَوْماً فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَةً ثُمَّ مَاتَ قَالَ يُقَدِّمُونَ رَجُلًا آخَرَ وَ يَعْتَدُّونَ بِالرَّكْعَةِ وَ يَطْرَحُونَ الْمَيِّتَ خَلْفَهُمْ وَ يَغْتَسِلُ مَنْ مَسَّهُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who leads Salah (prayer) with a people and performs one Rak‘at; then he dies. He (the Imam) said, ‘They make another man to lead and count it as one Rak‘at, leave the dead body behind them and then take Ghusl (bath) for touching a dead body.’”

قَالَ: أَيَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ فِي الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي يَفُوتُهُ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ رَكْعَتَانِ قُلْتُ يَقُولُونَ يَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا[2] بِالْحَمْدِ وَ سُورَةٍ فَقَالَ هَذَا يُقَلِّبُ صَلَاتَهُ يَجْعَلُ أَوَّلَهَا آخِرَهَا قُلْتُ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ يَقْرَأُ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), once asked, ‘What do they say about a man who has missed two Rak‘at of the Imam’s Salah (prayer)?’ I replied, ‘They say that he is to recite al-Hamd and Surah (chapter) in them.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He turns his Salah (prayer) backward by making its first the last.’ I then asked, ‘How is he to do i

قُلْتُ أَجِي‌ءُ إِلَى الْإِمَامِ وَ قَدْ سَبَقَنِي بِرَكْعَةٍ فِي الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ وَقَعَ فِي قَلْبِي أَنِّي أَتْمَمْتُ فَلَمْ أَزَلْ ذَاكِراً لِلَّهِ حَتَّى طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَلَمَّا طَلَعَتْ نَهَضْتُ فَذَكَرْتُ أَنَّ الْإِمَامَ كَانَ سَبَقَنِي بِرَكْعَةٍ فَقَالَ إِنْ كُنْتَ فِي مَقَامِكَ فَأَتِمَّ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَ إِنْ كُنْتَ قَدِ انْصَرَفْتَ فَعَلَيْكَ الْإِعَادَةُ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I come to the Imam when he is one Rak‘at ahead of me in the morning Salah (prayer). When he says Sal am (the phrase of offering greeting of peace) I, thinking to have completed, remain speaking of Allah until sunrise. At sunrise I stood up and remembered that the Imam was one Rak‘a

سَأَلْتُهُ‌[1] عَنِ الرَّجُلِ صَلَّى مَعَ قَوْمٍ وَ هُوَ يَرَى أَنَّهَا الْأُولَى وَ كَانَتِ الْعَصْرَ قَالَ فَلْيَجْعَلْهَا الْأُولَى وَ لْيُصَلِّ الْعَصْرَ[2]. - وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ فَإِنْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ وَ لَمْ يَكُنْ صَلَّى الْأُولَى فَلَا يَدْخُلْ مَعَهُمْ‌

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with a people and he thinks it is the first (al-Dhuhr) but it is al-‘Asr. He (the Imam) said, ‘He considers it the first and perform al-‘Asr.’” In another Hadith it is said, ‘If he knows that it is al-‘Asr and has not performed the one before,

سَأَلْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ص عَنْ إِمَامٍ أَمَّ قَوْماً فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلَى وُضُوءٍ فَانْصَرَفَ وَ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ رَجُلٍ وَ أَدْخَلَهُ فَقَدَّمَهُ وَ لَمْ يَعْلَمِ الَّذِي قُدِّمَ مَا صَلَّى الْقَوْمُ قَالَ يُصَلِّي بِهِمْ فَإِنْ أَخْطَأَ سَبَّحَ الْقَوْمُ بِهِ وَ بَنَى عَلَى صَلَاةِ الَّذِي كَانَ قَبْلَهُ.

“I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about the case of an Imam who leads a people and remembers that his Wudu’ is not valid. He moves away and holds the hand of another man to make him lead and he does not know how much is performed. He (the Imam) said, ‘He performs Salah (prayer) with them and if he m

سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الَّذِي يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ قَبْلَ الْإِمَامِ‌[4] أَ يَعُودُ فَيَرْكَعُ إِذَا أَبْطَأَ الْإِمَامُ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ قَالَ لَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about one who raises his head before the Imam. Is he to return to Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) if the Imam delays, or raise his head?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, he must not raise his head.’”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ دُونَ الصُّفُوفِ رَكَعُوا فَرَكَعَ وَحْدَهُ وَ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَمَضَى حَتَّى لَحِقَ الصُّفُوفَ.

“I once saw abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), entering Masjid al-Haram during al-‘Asr Salah (prayer), when he was near the rows, they performed Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees). He (the Imam) performed Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) alone and two Sajdah (prostration). He (the Imam) then stood up and walked until he joined t

قُلْتُ لَهُ‌[1] الرَّجُلُ يَتَأَخَّرُ وَ هُوَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ لَا[2] قُلْتُ فَيَتَقَدَّمُ قَالَ نَعَمْ مَا شَاءَ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), ‘Can a man move backward in Salah (prayer)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, he cannot do so.’ I then asked, ‘Can he move forward?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, as much as he wants to al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah).’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ الرَّجُلِ يَأْتِي الصَّلَاةَ فَلَا يَجِدُ فِي الصَّفِّ مَقَاماً أَ يَقُومُ وَحْدَهُ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَقُومَ بِحِذَاءِ الْإِمَامِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who comes to Salah (prayer) and does not find a place in the rows. Can he stand up alone until Salah (prayer) is complete? He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is not an offense to stand parallel to the Imam.’”

إِنْ صَلَّى قَوْمٌ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَ بَيْنَ الْإِمَامِ مَا لَا يُتَخَطَّى فَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ الْإِمَامُ لَهُمْ بِإِمَامٍ وَ أَيُّ صَفٍّ كَانَ أَهْلُهُ يُصَلُّونَ بِصَلَاةِ إِمَامٍ وَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَ بَيْنَ الصَّفِّ الَّذِي يَتَقَدَّمُهُمْ قَدْرَ مَا لَا يُتَخَطَّى فَلَيْسَ تِلْكَ لَهُمْ فَإِنْ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمْ سُتْرَةٌ أَوْ جِدَارٌ فَلَيْسَتْ تِلْكَ لَهُمْ بِصَلَاةٍ إِلَّا مَنْ كَانَ مِنْ حِيَالِ الْبَابِ قَالَ وَ قَالَ هَ

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If a people perform Salah (prayer) and there is a space between them and the Imam, which cannot be covered by one step, that Imam is not their Imam. Any row which performs Salah (prayer) following an Imam and the space between this and the row in front is more than can be covered by one s

إِذَا دَخَلْتَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَ الْإِمَامُ رَاكِعٌ فَظَنَنْتَ أَنَّكَ إِنْ مَشَيْتَ إِلَيْهِ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تُدْرِكَهُ فَكَبِّرْ وَ ارْكَعْ وَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَاسْجُدْ مَكَانَكَ فَإِنْ قَامَ فَالْحَقْ بِالصَّفِّ وَ إِنْ جَلَسَ فَاجْلِسْ مَكَانَكَ فَإِذَا قَامَ فَالْحَقْ بِالصَّفِّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you enter a Masjid and the Imam is in Ruku‘ (bowing down on one’s knees) and you think that if you walked all the way to join, he raises his head before you join. Say Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) perform Ruku‘, and if he raised his head, perform Sajdah (prostration)

لَا أَرَى بِالصُّفُوفِ بَيْنَ الْأَسَاطِينِ بَأْساً.

“Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘I do not see any problem in the rows between the pillars.”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُدْرِكُ الْإِمَامَ وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ يَتَشَهَّدُ وَ لَيْسَ خَلْفَهُ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ قَالَ لَا يَتَقَدَّمُ الْإِمَامَ وَ لَا يَتَأَخَّرُ الرَّجُلَ وَ لَكِنْ يَقْعُدُ الَّذِي يَدْخُلُ مَعَهُ خَلْفَ الْإِمَامِ فَإِذَا سَلَّمَ الْإِمَامُ قَامَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who finds the Imam in sitting position saying Tashahhud (testimonies of belief) and there is no one behind him except one man on his right side. He (the Imam) said, ‘He does not go ahead of the Imam or behind the man, but sits down behind the Imam; and when the Imam says

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يُصَلِّي بِقَوْمٍ وَ هُوَ إِلَى زَاوِيَةٍ فِي بَيْتِهِ يَقْرَبُ الْحَائِطَ وَ كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَى يَسَارِهِ أَحَدٌ.

“I once saw abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), performing Salah (prayer) while standing in a corner of his house near the wall, all others on his right side and no one on his left.”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي بِقَوْمٍ وَ هُمْ فِي مَوْضِعٍ أَسْفَلَ مِنْ مَوْضِعِهِ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي فِيهِ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ الْإِمَامُ عَلَى شِبْهِ الدُّكَّانِ أَوْ عَلَى مَوْضِعٍ أَرْفَعَ مِنْ مَوْضِعِهِمْ‌[1] لَمْ يَجُزْ صَلَاتُهُمْ وَ إِنْ كَانَ أَرْفَعَ مِنْهُمْ بِقَدْرِ إِصْبَعٍ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ أَوْ أَقَلَّ إِذَا كَانَ الِارْتِفَاعُ بِبَطْنِ مَسِيلٍ‌[2] فَإِنْ كَانَ أَرْضاً مَبْسُوطَةً أَوْ كَانَ فِي مَوْض

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with a people who are in a place lower than his place in which he performs Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘If the Imam is in a place which is higher than their place like a raised place, a platform, their Salah (prayer) is not permissible

ذَكَرَ الْحُسَيْنُ‌ أَنَّهُ أَمَرَ مَنْ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ صَلَّى إِلَى جَانِبِ رَجُلٍ فَقَامَ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ وَ هُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ ثُمَّ عَلِمَ وَ هُوَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ يُحَوِّلُهُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ‌[2].

Al-Husayn has mentioned that he (the Imam), ’Alayhi al-Salam, commanded a man, who was asking him (the Imam) about a man who was performing Salah (prayer) on the side of a man standing on his left. He did not know (that he is to stand on the right side of the Imam) and then he learned in his Salah (prayer) how he is to

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي الْبِيَعِ وَ الْكَنَائِسِ فَقَالَ رُشَّ وَ صَلِّ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ بُيُوتِ الْمَجُوسِ فَقَالَ رُشَّهَا وَ صَلِّ.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about performing Salah (prayer) in al-Biya‘ and churches. He (the Imam) said, ‘Sprinkle, then perform Salah (prayer).’ He (the narrator)

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ فَقَالَ إِنْ تَخَوَّفْتَ الضَّيْعَةَ عَلَى مَتَاعِكَ فَاكْنُسْهُ وَ انْضِحْهُ وَ لَا بَأْسَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about performing Salah (prayer) in camel’s barn. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you are afraid for your effects, sweep it and wash it. It is not harmful to perform Salah (prayer) in sheep barns.’”

لَا تُصَلِّ فِي مَرَابِطِ الْخَيْلِ وَ الْبِغَالِ وَ الْحَمِيرِ.

“He (the Imam) (a.s.), said, ‘You must not perform Salah (prayer) in places where horses, mules and donkeys are kept.’”

إِنْ كَانَ نَزُّهُ مِنَ الْبَالُوعَةِ فَلَا تُصَلِّ فِيهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ نَزُّهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah) side of the wall of a Masjid from which sewage, in which people urinate, leaks. He (the Imam) said, ‘If the leakage is from the sewage, do not perform Salah (prayer) there; but if the leakage is from something else, it is not an offense to perform Sal

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ صَلِّ فِيهَا وَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَخَافَ عَلَى مَتَاعِكَ الضَّيْعَةَ فَاكْنُسْهُ وَ رُشَّهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ صَلِّ فِيهِ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي ظَهْرِ الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ فِي الظَّوَاهِرِ الَّتِي بَيْنَ الْجَوَادِّ[3] فَأَمَّا عَلَى الْجَوَادِّ فَلَا تُصَلِّ فِيهَا قَالَ وَ كُرِهَ الصَّلَاةُ فِي

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the barn of sheep. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can perform Salah (prayer) there but do not perform Salah (prayer) in the place where camels are kept, unless you are afraid for loss of your property, in which case, you can sweep and sprinkle water on it, then perform Salah (prayer

لَا تُصَلِّ فِي بَيْتٍ فِيهِ مَجُوسِيٌّ وَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ تُصَلِّيَ وَ فِيهِ يَهُودِيٌّ أَوْ نَصْرَانِيٌ‌[2].

‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) in a house in which there is a Zoroastrian, but it is not a offense if there is a Jew or a Christian.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع إِنَّا كُنَّا فِي الْبَيْدَاءِ فِي آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَتَوَضَّأْتُ وَ اسْتَكْتُ وَ أَنَا أَهُمُّ بِالصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ كَأَنَّهُ دَخَلَ قَلْبِي شَيْ‌ءٌ فَهَلْ يُصَلَّى فِي الْبَيْدَاءِ فِي الْمَحْمِلِ فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّ فِي الْبَيْدَاءِ قُلْتُ وَ أَيْنَ حَدُّ الْبَيْدَاءِ فَقَالَ كَانَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذَا بَلَغَ ذَاتَ الْجَيْشِ‌[3] جَدَّ فِي السَّيْرِ ثُمَّ لَا يُصَلِّي حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ مُعَر

“I once said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), ‘We were in al-Bayda’ (name of a place) toward the end of the night. I took Wudu’, brushed my teeth and I intended to perform Salah (prayer), then it occurred to me. Is it permissible to perform Salah (prayer), in al-Bayda’ in the carriage? He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not perform Salah

قَالَ الرِّضَا ع‌ كُلُّ طَرِيقٍ يُوطَأُ وَ يُتَطَرَّقُ كَانَتْ فِيهِ جَادَّةٌ أَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ لَا يَنْبَغِي الصَّلَاةُ فِيهِ قُلْتُ فَأَيْنَ أُصَلِّي قَالَ يَمْنَةً وَ يَسْرَةً.

“Al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not perform Salah (prayer) on any road which is used, regardless, it has a main path or not. It is not proper to perform Salah (prayer) on it.’ I then asked, ‘Where then one can perform Salah (prayer)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘On its right or left sides.’”

قُلْتُ لَهُ تَحْضُرُ الصَّلَاةُ وَ الرَّجُلُ بِالْبَيْدَاءِ فَقَالَ يَتَنَحَّى عَنِ الْجَوَادِّ يَمْنَةً وَ يَسْرَةً وَ يُصَلِّي.

He (the Imam) said, ‘One moves away from the center toward the right or left, then performs Salah (prayer).”’

الصَّلَاةُ تُكْرَهُ فِي‌ ثَلَاثَةِ مَوَاطِنَ مِنَ الطَّرِيقِ الْبَيْدَاءِ وَ هِيَ ذَاتُ الْجَيْشِ وَ ذَاتِ الصَّلَاصِلِ وَ ضَجْنَانَ‌[1] قَالَ وَ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يُصَلَّى بَيْنَ الظَّوَاهِرِ وَ هِيَ الْجَوَادُّ جَوَادُّ الطَّرِيقِ وَ يُكْرَهُ أَنْ يُصَلَّى فِي الْجَوَادِّ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘It is undesirable to perform Salah (prayer) in three locations of roads. They are al-Bayda’ which is Dhat al-Jaysh, Dhat al-Salasil, and Dajnan (names of places).’ He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) then said, ‘It is not an offense to perform Salah (prayer) above the main r

لَا يُصَلَّى فِي وَادِي الشُّقْرَةِ[2].

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Salah (prayer) is not performed in al-Shuqrah valley.’”

عَشَرَةُ مَوَاضِعَ لَا يُصَلَّى فِيهَا الطِّينُ وَ الْمَاءُ وَ الْحَمَّامُ وَ الْقُبُورُ وَ مَسَانُّ الطَّرِيقِ‌[3] وَ قُرَى النَّمْلِ وَ مَعَاطِنُ الْإِبِلِ وَ مَجْرَى الْمَاءِ وَ السَّبَخُ وَ الثَّلْجُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Salah (prayer) is not performed in ten places, such as in clay, water, bath houses, on graves, on main roads, ant’s colonies, camel’s barns, water beds, salt grounds and on snow.’”

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about what is clay on which Sajdah (prostration) cannot be performed. He (the Imam) said, ‘Clay is that on which one’s forehead sinks lower and lower without remaining in one place on earth.’ I asked about a man who performs Salah (prayer) on graves. سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَخْرُجُ فِي هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَ رُبَّمَا لَمْ يَكُنْ مَوْضِعٌ أُصَلِّي فِيهِ مِنَ الثَّلْجِ فَقَالَ إِنْ أَمْكَنَكَ أَنْ لَا تَسْجُدَ عَلَى الثَّلْجِ فَلَا تَسْجُدْ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يُمْكِنْكَ فَسَوِّهِ وَ اسْجُدْ عَلَيْهِ. - وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ اسْجُدْ عَلَى ثَوْبِكَ.

“I once said to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), ‘I may go in this direction and may not find a place to perform Salah (prayer) because of snow. He (the Imam) said, ‘If possible, do not perform Sajdah (prostration) on snow and if not, then level it and perform Sajdah (prostration) on it.’” In another Hadith it is said, ‘Perform S

فِي الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مُصْحَفٌ مَفْتُوحٌ فِي قِبْلَتِهِ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غِلَافٍ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَ قَالَ لَا يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ وَ فِي قِبْلَتِهِ نَارٌ أَوْ حَدِيدٌ وَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ قِنْدِيلٌ مُعَلَّقٌ وَ فِيهِ نَارٌ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ بِحِيَالِهِ قَالَ إِذَا ارْتَفَعَ كَانَ شَرّاً لَا يُصَلِّي بِحِيَالِهِ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) and in front of him there is an open copy of Quran. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not permissible.’ I then asked, ‘What happens if it is in a cover?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is permissible.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘One is not to perform Sal

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي وَ السِّرَاجُ مَوْضُوعٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فِي الْقِبْلَةِ فَقَالَ لَا يَصْلُحُ لَهُ أَنْ يَسْتَقْبِلَ النَّارَ وَ رُوِيَ أَيْضاً أَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ لِأَنَّ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي لَهُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ.

“I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about a man who performs Salah (prayer) with a lamp placed in his front in the direction of al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not proper for him to face fire.’ It is also narrated that it is not an offense because the One for whom Salah (prayer) is performed is closer

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَقُومُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَأَرَى قُدَّامِي فِي الْقِبْلَةِ الْعَذِرَةَ فَقَالَ تَنَحَّ عَنْهَا مَا اسْتَطَعْتَ وَ لَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى الْجَوَادِّ.

“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I stand up for Salah (prayer) and see feces in the direction of al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah). He (the Imam) said, ‘Keep away from it as much as you can and do not perform Salah (prayer) on a main road.’”

لَا تُصَلَّى الْمَكْتُوبَةُ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ[2]. - وَ رُوِيَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ يُصَلَّى فِي أَرْبَعِ جَوَانِبِهَا إِذَا اضْطُرَّ إِلَى ذَلِكَ.

‘Do not perform obligatory Salah (prayer) in al- Ka‘bah.’” In another Hadith it is narrated that Salah (prayer) is performed toward four directions if one has no choice but to do so.”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الرَّجُلُ يُصَلِّي عَلَى أَبِي قُبَيْسٍ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ.

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘Can one perform Salah (prayer) on abu Qubays (name of the hill) facing the direction of al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah)? He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it.”’

سَأَلْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ع عَنِ التَّمَاثِيلِ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَتْ عَنْ يَمِينِكَ وَ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ وَ عَنْ خَلْفِكَ أَوْ تَحْتِ رِجْلَيْكَ وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ فِي الْقِبْلَةِ فَأَلْقِ عَلَيْهَا ثَوْباً.

“I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about pictures in the house. He (the Imam) said, ‘There is no offense in it if it is on your right, left, behind you or under your feet. If it is in the direction of al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah), then cover it with a piece of cloth.’”

إِنْ قَامَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ قِبْلَةٌ وَ لَكِنَّهُ يَسْتَلْقِي عَلَى قَفَاهُ وَ يَفْتَحُ عَيْنَيْهِ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَ يَعْقِدُ بِقَلْبِهِ الْقِبْلَةَ الَّتِي فِي السَّمَاءِ الْبَيْتَ الْمَعْمُورَ وَ يَقْرَأُ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ غَمَّضَ عَيْنَيْهِ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ فَتَحَ عَيْنَيْهِ وَ السُّجُودُ عَلَى نَحْوِ ذَلِكَ.

“I once asked al-Rida’ (a.s.), about the case of one who at the time of Salah (prayer) is on the top of al-Ka‘bah. He (the Imam) said, ‘If he stands up there is no al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah) for him; however, he lies down on his back and opens his eyes to the sky and keeps in his heart al-Qiblah which is in the heaven, al-B

إِنْ كَانَ بِعَيْنٍ وَاحِدَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ إِنْ كَانَ لَهُ عَيْنَانِ فَلَا.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about pictures on furnishings which come in one’s view has said, ‘If there is one eye for it, it is not harmful but if it has two eyes then it is not permissible.’”

إِنْ كَانَ تُصِيبُهُ الشَّمْسُ وَ الرِّيحُ وَ كَانَ جَافّاً فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ يُتَّخَذُ مَبَالًا.

“We once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a roof on which there is urine. Can one perform Salah (prayer) there? He (the Imam) said, ‘If sun rays and wind can reach it and it is dry, there is no offense in it unless it is used as a urinating place.’”

لَا يُصَلَّى فِي بَيْتٍ فِيهِ خَمْرٌ أَوْ مُسْكِرٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Salah (prayer) is not performed in a house where wine and intoxicating items exist.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ هَذِهِ الْمَنَازِلِ الَّتِي يَنْزِلُهَا النَّاسُ فِيهَا أَبْوَالُ الدَّوَابِ‌ وَ السِّرْجِينُ وَ يَدْخُلُهَا الْيَهُودُ وَ النَّصَارَى كَيْفَ يُصَلَّى فِيهَا قَالَ صَلِّ عَلَى ثَوْبِكَ.

“I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of these houses where people lodge, in which there is urine of animals and dung, where Jews and Christians enter. How is one to perform Salah (prayer)? He (the Imam) said, ‘Perform Salah (prayer) on your clothes.’”

قَالَ جَبْرَئِيلُ ع يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتاً فِيهِ صُورَةُ إِنْسَانٍ وَ لَا بَيْتاً يُبَالُ فِيهِ وَ لَا بَيْتاً فِيهِ كَلْبٌ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘Jibril said, “O Messenger of Allah, we do not enter a house in which there are pictures of a human being, or a house used for urinating or a house where a dog exists.’””

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِنَّ جَبْرَئِيلَ ع أَتَانِي فَقَالَ إِنَّا مَعْشَرَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ لَا نَدْخُلُ بَيْتاً فِيهِ كَلْبٌ وَ لَا تِمْثَالُ جَسَدٍ[1] وَ لَا إِنَاءٌ يُبَالُ فِيهِ.

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي قَمِيصٍ وَاحِدٍ أَوْ فِي قَبَاءٍ طَاقٍ أَوْ فِي قَبَاءٍ مَحْشُوٍّ وَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ سَفِيقٌ أَوْ قَبَاءٌ لَيْسَ بِطَوِيلِ الْفُرَجِ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ الثَّوْبُ الْوَاحِدُ يُتَوَشَّحُ بِهِ وَ سَرَاوِيلُ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ قَالَ إِذَا لَبِسَ السَّرَاوِيلَ فَلْيَجْعَلْ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ شَيْئاً وَ لَوْ حَبْلًا[3].

“I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one shirt or a gown of a single layer or stuffed (of several layers), one without a loincloth. He (the Imam) said, ‘If one is wearing a shirt which is of a densely woven fabric or a gown which does not have a long opening (

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع صَلَّى فِي إِزَارٍ وَاحِدٍ لَيْسَ بِوَاسِعٍ قَدْ عَقَدَهُ عَلَى عُنُقِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مَا تَرَى لِلرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي قَمِيصٍ وَاحِدٍ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَ كَثِيفاً فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ تُصَلِّي فِي الدِّرْعِ وَ الْمِقْنَعَةِ إِذَا كَانَ الدِّرْعُ كَثِيفاً يَعْنِي إِذَا كَانَ سَتِيراً قُلْتُ رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ الْأَمَةُ تُغَطِّي رَأْسَهَا إِذَا صَلَّتْ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْأَمَ

“I once saw abu Ja‘far (a.s.), perform Salah (prayer) wearing a loincloth, not very large, secured to his neck by a knot. I then asked him (the Imam) about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one shirt. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not an offense if it is woven densely, and a woman performs Salah (prayer) in a loose out

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ أَمَّ قَوْماً فِي قَمِيصٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ فَقَالَ لَا يَنْبَغِي إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ عَلَيْهِ رِدَاءٌ أَوْ عِمَامَةٌ يَرْتَدِي بِهَا.

I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a man who leads a people in Salah (prayer) wearing a shirt without a gown. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not proper for him to perform Salah (prayer) without a gown or turban to dress up with.’”
