سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الذَّبْحِ فَقَالَ إِذَا ذَبَحْتَ فَأَرْسِلْ وَ لَا تَكْتِفْ‌[2] وَ لَا تَقْلِبِ السِّكِّينَ لِتُدْخِلَهَا مِنْ تَحْتِ الْحُلْقُومِ وَ تَقْطَعَهُ إِلَى فَوْقُ وَ الْإِرْسَالُ لِلطَّيْرِ خَاصَّةً[3] فَإِنْ تَرَدَّى فِي جُبٍّ أَوْ وَهْدَةٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ وَ لَا تُطْعِمْهُ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي التَّرَدِّي قَتَلَهُ أَوِ الذَّبْحُ وَ إِنْ كَانَ شَيْ‌ءٌ مِنَ الْغَنَمِ فَأَمْسِكْ صُوفَهُ أَو

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you slaughter an animal, do not tie down all the legs, do not push the knife under the throat and veins then turn it to cut upward. You must allow the bird to remain loose especially, but if it falls in a well or a hole, then do not use it for food or feed; you do not know if the

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about slaughtering. He (the Imam) said, ‘You must turn the animal to be slaughtered toward al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah) and do not cut its spinal cord before it dies. You must not use for food what is not properly slaughtered from the proper place.’”

8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), has said, ‘When you slaughter a sheep and remove its skin or a certain part of its skin before it dies, it then is not lawful to use it for food.’”

إِذَا امْتَنَعَ عَلَيْكَ بَعِيرٌ وَ أَنْتَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَنْحَرَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ مِنْكَ فَإِنْ خَشِيتَ أَنْ يَسْبِقَكَ فَضَرَبْتَهُ بِسَيْفٍ أَوْ طَعَنْتَهُ بِرُمْحٍ بَعْدَ أَنْ تُسَمِّيَ فَكُلْ إِلَّا أَنْ تُدْرِكَهُ وَ لَمْ يَمُتْ بَعْدُ فَذَكِّهِ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once in al-Kufah a bull revolted and broke loose. People rushed with their swords and beat it down. They asked ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), about it and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is a fast slaughtering but its flesh is lawful for food.’”

“About the case of a bull that broke loose and people rushed with their swords and beat it down, abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘They asked ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), about it and he (the Imam) said, ‘It is a fast slaughtering but its flesh is lawful for food.’”

أَنَّ قَوْماً أَتَوُا النَّبِيَّ ص فَقَالُوا إِنَّ بَقَرَةً لَنَا غَلَبَتْنَا وَ اسْتَصْعَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا فَضَرَبْنَاهَا بِالسَّيْفِ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِأَكْلِهَا.

‘You can use weapons for Nahr and mention the name of Allah; then you can use it for food.’”

“It is the case of a man who hits a camel or sheep with his sword, with a mention of the name of Allah, in a part which is not for slaughtering. Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The flesh of an animal slaughtered from a part which is not for slaughtering is not useable for food if it is done intentionally, and it is

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِذْ جَاءَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ فَقَالَ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ يَقُولُ لَكَ جَدِّي إِنَّ رَجُلًا ضَرَبَ بَقَرَةً بِفَأْسٍ فَسَقَطَتْ ثُمَّ ذَبَحَهَا فَلَمْ يُرْسِلْ مَعَهُ بِالْجَوَابِ وَ دَعَا سَعِيدَةَ مَوْلَاةَ أُمِّ فَرْوَةَ فَقَالَ لَهَا إِنَّ مُحَمَّداً أَتَانِي بِرِسَالَةٍ مِنْكِ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكِ بِالْجَوَابِ مَعَهُ فَإِنْ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذ

“Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Salam came. I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause. My grandfather asks you about the case of a man who has hit a cow with a hammer and it has fallen down, then he has slaughtered it.’ He (the Imam) did not send the answer but

فِي كِتَابِ عَلِيٍّ ع‌ إِذَا طَرَفَتِ الْعَيْنُ أَوْ رَكَضَتِ الرِّجْلُ أَوْ تَحَرَّكَ الذَّنَبُ فَكُلْ مِنْهُ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكْتَ ذَكَاتَهُ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that it is in the book of Ali (a.s.), that if the eye turns or the leg runs or the tail moves, then slaughtering properly is achieved.’”

إِذَا شَكَكْتَ فِي حَيَاةِ شَاةٍ وَ رَأَيْتَهَا تَطْرِفُ عَيْنَهَا أَوْ تُحَرِّكُ أُذُنَيْهَا أَوْ تَمْصَعُ‌[3] بِذَنَبِهَا فَاذْبَحْهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَكَ حَلَالٌ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that in a doubtful condition about a sheep being alive or dead, see if its eyes turn, or its ears move or its tail moves, then slaughter it, it is lawful for food.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ ذَبَحَ ذَبِيحَةً فَجَهِلَ أَنْ يُوَجِّهَهَا إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ قَالَ كُلْ مِنْهَا فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يُوَجِّهْهَا[1]- قَالَ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْهَا وَ لَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْ ذَبِيحَةٍ مَا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهَا وَ قَالَ ع إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَذْبَحَ فَاسْتَقْبِلْ بِذَبِيحَتِكَ الْقِبْلَةَ.

“I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about the case of a man who slaughters an animal but does not know about making it to face al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah). He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use it for food.’ I then said, ‘He has not made it to face al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah).’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use it for food and so also is th

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَذْبَحُ وَ لَا يُسَمِّي قَالَ إِنْ كَانَ نَاسِياً فَلَا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَ مُسْلِماً وَ كَانَ يُحْسِنُ أَنْ يَذْبَحَ وَ لَا يَنْخَعُ وَ لَا يَقْطَعُ الرَّقَبَةَ بَعْدَ مَا يَذْبَحُ.

“I once asked abu Ja’far (a.s.), about the case of a man who slaughters but does not mention the name of Allah. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is because of forgetfulness, it is not unlawful if he is a Muslim, knows slaughtering properly, and does not cut off the spinal cord and the neck after slaughtering.’”

سُئِلَ عَنِ الذَّبِيحَةِ تُذْبَحُ لِغَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا لَمْ يَتَعَمَّدْ وَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَذْبَحُ فَيَنْسَى أَنْ يُسَمِّيَ أَ تُؤْكَلُ ذَبِيحَتُهُ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ إِذَا كَانَ لَا يُتَّهَمُ‌[2] وَ كَانَ يُحْسِنُ الذَّبْحَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ وَ لَا يَنْخَعُ وَ لَا يَكْسِرُ الرَّقَبَةَ حَتَّى تَبْرُدَ الذَّبِيحَةُ.

“Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about an animal which is slaughtered facing a direction other than al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if it is not intentional.’ He (the Imam) was asked about a man who forgets to mention the name of Allah; if it can be used for food. He (the Imam) said

إِذَا ذَبَحْتَ الذَّبِيحَةَ فَوَجَدْتَ فِي بَطْنِهَا وَلَداً تَامّاً فَكُلْ وَ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ تَامّاً فَلَا تَأْكُلْ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘If you slaughter an animal and find inside its young in a complete form, you can use it for food but if it is not complete then do not use it for food.’”

سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الشَّاةِ يَذْبَحُهَا وَ فِي بَطْنِهَا وَلَدٌ وَ قَدْ أَشْعَرَ فَقَالَ ع ذَكَاتُهُ ذَكَاةُ أُمِّهِ.

“I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s.), about a sheep which is slaughtered and its young, which has grown its wool, is found inside. He (the Imam) said, ‘Slaughtering for it is the slaughtering of its mother.’”

“Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), would say, ‘If you arrive in time (when it still is alive) to slaughter an animal butted by other animals, fallen from height or eaten by predators, you can use it for food.’”

لَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْ فَرِيسَةِ السَّبُعِ وَ لَا الْمَوْقُوذَةِ[2] وَ لَا الْمُتَرَدِّيَةِ إِلَّا أَنْ تُدْرِكَهَا حَيَّةً فَتُذَكِّيَ.

‘Do not use for food an animal eaten by predator, injured because of fall of something on it or fallen from height, unless you arrive in time (when it is still alive) to slaughter it properly.’”

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ قِدْرٍ فِيهَا جَزُورٌ وَقَعَ فِيهَا مِقْدَارُ أُوقِيَّةٍ مِنْ دَمٍ أَ يُؤْكَلُ فَقَالَ ع نَعَمْ لِأَنَّ النَّارَ تَأْكُلُ الدَّمَ‌[3].

“I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a cooking pot with camel’s meat in it being cooked and an amount of blood equal to an Awqiyah (one ounce) falls; if the content of the pot can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, because fire eats the blood.’”

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَكْرَهُ الذَّبْحَ وَ إِرَاقَةَ الدَّمِ- يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ إِلَّا عَنْ ضَرُورَةٍ.

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, disliked slaughtering (animals) and spilling blood on Fridays before Salat (prayer) except in the case of an emergency.’”

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ لِغِلْمَانِهِ‌ لَا تَذْبَحُوا حَتَّى يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ‌ جَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَناً لِكُلِّ شَيْ‌ءٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَإِنْ خِفْنَا فَقَالَ ع إِنْ خِفْتَ الْمَوْتَ فَاذْبَحْ.

‘Do not slaughter any animal before it is dawn because Allah has made the night for everything to rest.’ I then asked him (the Imam) saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what happens if we are afraid?’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘If you are afraid of death then you can slaughter.’”

قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ الْمُنْذِرِ رَوَى عَنْكَ أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ إِنَّ الذَّبِيحَةَ بِالاسْمِ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا أَهْلُهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّهُمْ أَحْدَثُوا فِيهَا شَيْئاً لَا أَشْتَهِيهِ‌[1] قَالَ حَنَانٌ فَسَأَلْتُ نَصْرَانِيّاً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَيَّ شَيْ‌ءٍ تَقُولُونَ إِذَا ذَبَحْتُمْ فَقَالَ نَقُولُ بِاسْمِ الْمَسِيحِ.
