وَجَدَ رَجُلٌ رِكَازاً[3] عَلَى عَهْدِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فَابْتَاعَهُ أَبِي مِنْهُ بِثَلَاثِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ وَ مِائَةِ شَاةٍ مُتْبِعٍ‌[4] فَلَامَتْهُ أُمِّي وَ قَالَتْ أَخَذْتَ هَذِهِ بِثَلَاثِمِائَةِ شَاةٍ أَوْلَادُهَا مِائَةٌ وَ أَنْفُسُهَا مِائَةٌ وَ مَا فِي بُطُونِهَا مِائَةٌ قَالَ فَنَدِمَ أَبِي فَانْطَلَقَ لِيَسْتَقِيلَهُ فَأَبَى عَلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ خُذْ مِنِّي عَشْرَ شِيَاهٍ خُذْ مِنِّي عِشْرِين

“A man during the time of ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), had found a treasure and my father bought it from him for three hundred dirham and one hundred sheep followed by their young; and my mother blamed him for it, saying, ‘You have bought it for three hundred sheep; one hundred of their young, one hundred sheep and one hu

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص‌ إِذَا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَى أُمَّةٍ وَ لَمْ يُنْزِلْ بِهَا الْعَذَابَ غَلَتْ أَسْعَارُهَا وَ قَصُرَتْ أَعْمَارُهَا وَ لَمْ تَرْبَحْ تُجَّارُهَا وَ لَمْ تَزْكُ ثِمَارُهَا وَ لَمْ تَغْزُرْ أَنْهَارُهَا[3] وَ حُبِسَ عَنْهَا أَمْطَارُهَا وَ سُلِّطَ عَلَيْهَا شِرَارُهَا.

‘When Allah becomes angry with a people on whom He has not sent any suffering, He makes their prices to become costly, shortens their life span, takes away profit from their trade, their fruits do not become clean, their canals do not over-flow and He withholds their rain and makes their wicked ones to dominate them.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, or ‘Amir al- Mu’minin has said, ‘Women are of four kinds: a universal goodness, a fountain of breeding, an oppressive over-burdening or feed for parasites.”’

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Marry a woman of large eyes, of brunette color, wide buttocks and of medium height; and if you disliked, her mahr (dowry) is on me.’”

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Men are created from earth, their ambition is in earth, and women are created from men and their ambition is to find men; so keep your women, O community of men.’”

قَالَ‌ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فِي رِسَالَتِهِ إِلَى الْحَسَنِ ع إِيَّاكَ وَ مُشَاوَرَةَ النِّسَاءِ فَإِنَّ رَأْيَهُنَّ إِلَى الْأَفْنِ وَ عَزْمَهُنَّ إِلَى الْوَهْنِ‌[1] وَ اكْفُفْ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ بِحِجَابِكَ إِيَاهُنَّ فَإِنَّ شِدَّةَ الْحِجَابِ خَيْرٌ لَكَ وَ لَهُنَّ مِنَ الِارْتِيَابِ وَ لَيْسَ خُرُوجُهُنَّ بِأَشَدَّ مِنْ دُخُولِ مَنْ لَا تَثِقُ بِهِ عَلَيْهِنَ‌[2] فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لَا يَع

قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع‌ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ الشَّهْوَةَ عَشَرَةَ أَجْزَاءٍ فَجَعَلَ تِسْعَةَ أَجْزَاءٍ فِي النِّسَاءِ وَ جُزْءاً وَاحِداً فِي الرِّجَالِ وَ لَوْ لَا مَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِنَّ مِنَ الْحَيَاءِ عَلَى قَدْرِ أَجْزَاءِ الشَّهْوَةِ لَكَانَ لِكُلِّ رَجُلٍ تِسْعُ نِسْوَةٍ مُتَعَلِّقَاتٍ بِهِ.

‘Allah created desire of ten parts, of which nine parts are placed in women and only one part in men. If He did not place shyness in women of a similar (nine out of ten) amount in women like desire, nine women would attach themselves to one man.’”

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع إِذِ اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَسَلَّمَ فَرَحَّبَ بِهِ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ع وَ أَدْنَاهُ وَ سَاءَلَهُ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي خَطَبْتُ إِلَى مَوْلَاكَ فُلَانِ بْنِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ ابْنَتَهُ فُلَانَةَ فَرَدَّنِي وَ رَغِبَ عَنِّي وَ ازْدَرَأَنِي لِدَمَامَتِي وَ حَاجَتِي وَ غُرْبَتِي وَ قَدْ دَخَلَنِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ غَضَاضَةٌ هَجْمَةٌ غُضَّ لَهَا

“‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan had a spy in al-Madinah who reported to him from time to time about things that happened there. Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), set free one of his slave-girls and then married with her. The spy reported this to ‘Abd al-Malik who wrote to Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), in a letter that said, ‘Thereafter,

أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع تَزَوَّجَ سُرِّيَّةً كَانَتْ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ع فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ فِي ذَلِكَ كِتَاباً أَنَّكَ صِرْتَ بَعْلَ الْإِمَاءِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ع أَنَّ اللَّهَ رَفَعَ بِالْإِسْلَامِ الْخَسِيسَةَ وَ أَتَمَّ بِهِ النَّاقِصَةَ فَأَكْرَمَ بِهِ مِنَ اللُّؤْمِ فَلَا لُؤْمَ عَلَى مُسْلِمٍ إِنَّمَا اللُّؤْمُ لُؤْمُ الْجَ

“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), married a slave-girl who belonged to al-Hassan ibn Ali (a.s) and ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan was informed about it. He wrote a letter to him (the Imam) that said, ‘I have heard that you have become the husband of a slave-girl!’ Ali ibn al-Husayn wrote back to

زَوَّجَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع امْرَأَةً مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَ كَانَ يَلِي أَمْرَهَا فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْجَبَّارِ الْحَلِيمِ الْغَفَّارِ الْوَاحِدِ الْقَهَّارِ الْكَبِيرِ الْمُتَعَالِ‌ سَواءٌ مِنْكُمْ مَنْ أَسَرَّ الْقَوْلَ وَ مَنْ جَهَرَ بِهِ وَ مَنْ هُوَ مُسْتَخْفٍ بِاللَّيْلِ وَ سارِبٌ‌ بِالنَّهارِ[2] أَحْمَدُهُ وَ أَسْتَعِينُهُ وَ أُومِنُ بِهِ وَ أَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْهِ‌ وَ كَفى‌ بِ

قَضَى أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ع فِي امْرَأَةٍ حُرَّةٍ دَلَّسَ لَهَا عَبْدٌ فَنَكَحَهَا وَ لَمْ تَعْلَمْ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ حُرٌّ قَالَ يُفَرَّقُ بَيْنَهُمَا إِنْ شَاءَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ.

“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), issued a judgment about the case of a free woman who was cheated by a slave who married her and she did not know him to be other than a free man. He (the Imam) said, ‘They must be separated if the woman so wanted.’”
