أَنَّهُمَا كَرِهَا رُكُوبَ الْبَحْرِ لِلتِّجَارَةِ
“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘We dislike sailing on the sea for business.’”
أَنَّهُمَا كَرِهَا رُكُوبَ الْبَحْرِ لِلتِّجَارَةِ
“Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, have said, ‘We dislike sailing on the sea for business.’”
قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع مَا أَجْمَلَ فِي الطَّلَبِ مَنْ رَكِبَ الْبَحْرَ لِلتِّجَارَةِ.
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated in a marfu’ manner the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali (a.s.), ‘has said, ‘How beautiful is the quest for trade to sail on the sea!”’ [Note: H 9118 and H 9119 appear to occur during two different eras, perhaps of safe and unsafe sailing times]
كُنْتُ حَمَلْتُ مَعِي مَتَاعاً إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَبَارَ عَلَيَّ فَدَخَلْتُ بِهِ الْمَدِينَةَ عَلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنِّي حَمَلْتُ مَتَاعاً قَدْ بَارَ عَلَيَّ وَ قَدْ عَزَمْتُ عَلَى أَنْ أَصِيرَ إِلَى مِصْرَ فَأَرْكَبُ بَرّاً أَوْ بَحْراً فَقَالَ مِصْرُ الْحُتُوفِ يُقَيَّضُ[2] لَهَا أَقْصَرُ النَّاسِ أَعْمَاراً وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص مَا أَجْمَلَ فِي الطَّلَبِ مَنْ رَكِبَ الْبَحْرَ ثُمَّ ق
“I had carried goods with me to Makkah. I faced severe competition there so I went to visit abu al- Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), and told him (the Imam) that I had carried goods to Makkah but I faced competition and I decided to travel to Egypt. Should I travel by land or by sea? He (the Imam) said, ’Egypt is destructive.
فِي رُكُوبِ الْبَحْرِ لِلتِّجَارَةِ يُغَرِّرُ الرَّجُلُ بِدِينِهِ[2].
“Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘In sailing on the sea for trade one is deceived in his religion.’”
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُسَافِرُ فَيَرْكَبُ الْبَحْرَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي كَانَ يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ يُضِرُّ بِدِينِكَ هُوَ ذَا النَّاسُ يُصِيبُونَ أَرْزَاقَهُمْ وَ مَعِيشَتَهُمْ.
“This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who traveled and sailed on the sea. He (the Imam) said, ‘My father would say that it causes harms to one’s religion. There are people who find their livelihood and sustenance.’”
إِنَّا نَتَّجِرُ إِلَى هَذِهِ الْجِبَالِ فَنَأْتِي مِنْهَا عَلَى أَمْكِنَةٍ لَا نَقْدِرُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ إِلَّا عَلَى الثَّلْجِ فَقَالَ أَلَّا تَكُونُ مِثْلَ فُلَانٍ يَرْضَى بِالدُّونِ وَ لَا يَطْلُبُ تِجَارَةً لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ إِلَّا عَلَى الثَّلْجِ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a man came to abu Ja‘far (a.s.), and said, ‘We work for business in these mountains and come upon areas where we cannot perform Salat (prayer) except on snow. He (the Imam) said, ‘Why can you not be like so and so who is happy with less and does not demand such things because
كَانَتْ لِإِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع دَنَانِيرُ وَ أَرَادَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَا أَبَتِ إِنَّ فُلَاناً يُرِيدُ الْخُرُوجَ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ وَ عِنْدِي كَذَا وَ كَذَا دِينَاراً فَتَرَى أَنْ أَدْفَعَهَا إِلَيْهِ يَبْتَاعُ لِي بِهَا بِضَاعَةً مِنَ الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع يَا بُنَيَّ أَ مَا بَلَغَكَ أَنَّهُ يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ فَقَالَ إِسْم
‘Isma’il, son of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), had a certain amount of dinar and a man from Quraysh wanted to travel to Yemen, so ‘Isma’il asked his father, ’Father, so and so wants to go to Yemen and I have so and so amount of dinar. Do you think I should give it to him to bring for me goods from Yemen?’ Abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.
سَأَلْتُ عَبْداً صَالِحاً فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ كُنَّا مُرَافِقِينَ لِقَوْمٍ بِمَكَّةَ فَارْتَحَلْنَا عَنْهُمْ وَ حَمَلْنَا بَعْضَ مَتَاعِهِمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَ قَدْ ذَهَبَ الْقَوْمُ وَ لَا نَعْرِفُهُمْ وَ لَا نَعْرِفُ أَوْطَانَهُمْ فَقَدْ بَقِيَ الْمَتَاعُ عِنْدَنَا فَمَا نَصْنَعُ بِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ تَحْمِلُونَهُ حَتَّى تَلْحَقُوهُمْ بِالْكُوفَةِ فَقَالَ يُونُسُ قُلْتُ لَهُ لَسْتُ أَعْرِفُهُمْ وَ لَا نَدْرِي كَ
“This is concerning my question before the virtuous servant of Allah saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, we in Makkah had travel-mates, and when they left and we also left we carried certain items of their goods without knowing and they had gone. We did not know their places and the good
إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً فَقَالَ لِي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَسْأَلَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع وَ تَقُولَ لَهُ إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً قَدْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُلَاعِبُ أُمَّهَا وَ يُقَبِّلُهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَفْضَى إِلَيْهَا قَالَ فَسَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَقَالَ لِي كَذَبَ مُرْهُ فَلْيُفَارِقْهَا قَالَ فَرَجَعْتُ مِنْ سَفَرِي فَأَخْبَرْتُ الرَّجُلَ بِ
“A certain person of our people married a woman and said to me, ‘I like if you ask abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man from our people who has married a woman and thinks that he may have played with her mother like kissing without sexual intercourse.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.
قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَ يَسُرُّكَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَكَ قَائِدٌ يَا أَبَا هَارُونَ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ فَأَعْطَانِي ثَلَاثِينَ دِينَاراً فَقَالَ اشْتَرِ خَادِماً كَسُومِيّاً فَاشْتَرَاهُ فَلَمَّا أَنْ حَجَّ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ قَائِدَكَ يَا أَبَا هَارُونَ فَقَالَ خَيْراً فَأَعْطَاهُ خَمْسَةً وَ عِشْرِينَ دِينَاراً فَقَالَ لَهُ اشْتَرِ جَارِيَةً شَبَانِيَّةً فَإِ
Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Abu Is’haq Al Khannaf, from Muhammad Bin Abu Zayd, from Abu Haroun Al Makfouf who said, ‘Abu Abdullah asws said to me: ‘Would it cheer you up if there happened to be a (travel) guide for you, O Abu Haroun! I said, ‘Yes, may I be sacrificed for you asws ! So he asws gave me thirty
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع- عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ مَعَهُ أَهْلُهُ فِي السَّفَرِ لَا يَجِدُ الْمَاءَ أَ يَأْتِي أَهْلَهُ قَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَخَافَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ[1] قَالَ قُلْتُ طَلَبَ بِذَلِكَ اللَّذَّةَ أَوْ يَكُونُ شَبِقاً إِلَى النِّسَاءِ[2] قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّبِقَ يَخَافُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ- قُلْتُ يَطْلُبُ بِذَلِكَ اللَّذَّةَ قَالَ هُوَ حَلَالٌ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُ يُرْوَى عَنِ النَّبِيِّ
“This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who is on a journey with his wife and they cannot find water; if he can go to bed with his wife. He (the Imam) said, ‘I do not like it unless he is afraid for himself.’ I then asked, ‘Is it about the case of seeking to satisfy one’s l
يُكْرَهُ لِلرَّجُلِ إِذَا قَدِمَ مِنَ السَّفَرِ أَنْ يَطْرُقَ أَهْلَهُ لَيْلًا حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ.
‘It is detestable for a man to go to bed with his wife in the night of his arrival from a journey until the morning.’”
إِنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص خَرَجَ فِي بَعْضِ حَوَائِجِهِ فَعَهِدَ إِلَى امْرَأَتِهِ عَهْداً أَلَّا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا حَتَّى يَقْدَمَ قَالَ وَ إِنَّ أَبَاهَا مَرِضَ فَبَعَثَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ص فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ زَوْجِي خَرَجَ وَ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ لَا أَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِي حَتَّى يَقْدَمَ وَ إِنَّ أَبِي قَدْ مَرِضَ فَتَأْمُرُنِي أَنْ أَعُودَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللّ
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘In the time of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, a man left for a journey and instructed his wife not to leave her house until he comes back. He (the Imam) said that her father became ill so the woman
كَانَ رَجُلٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ وَ كَانَ لَهُ جَارِيَةٌ نَفِيسَةٌ فَوَقَعَتْ فِي قَلْبِ رَجُلٍ وَ أُعْجِبَ بِهَا فَشَكَا ذَلِكَ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ تَعَرَّضْ لِرُؤْيَتِهَا وَ كُلَّمَا رَأَيْتَهَا فَقُلْ أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ فَفَعَلَ فَمَا لَبِثَ إِلَّا يَسِيراً حَتَّى عَرَضَ لِوَلِيِّهَا سَفَرٌ فَجَاءَ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ فَقَالَ يَا فُلَانُ أَنْتَ جَارِي وَ أَوْثَقُ النَّاسِ عِنْدِي وَ قَدْ عَرَضَ
“There was a man in al-Madinah and he had a very beautiful slave-girl who attracted a man who liked her and he complained before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), who told him to avoid looking to her and on seeing her say, T ask Allah from His extra bounties.’ He followed the instruction. In a short time her master decided to le
سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع عَنْ رَجُلٍ كَانَ فِي سَفَرٍ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ الْمِصْرَ جَاءَ مَعَهُ بِشَاهِدَيْنِ فَلَمَّا اسْتَقْبَلَتْهُ امْرَأَتُهُ عَلَى الْبَابِ أَشْهَدَهُمَا عَلَى طَلَاقِهَا قَالَ لَا يَقَعُ بِهَا طَلَاقٌ[1].
“I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who is on a journey and when he enters the city he brings two witnesses, and when his wife comes to the door he asks them to bear witness to the divorce. He (the Imam) said, ’Divorce does not take place in this way.’”
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمُتَوَفَّى عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا أَ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِ زَوْجِهَا قَالَ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِ زَوْجِهَا وَ تَحُجُّ وَ تَنْتَقِلُ مِنْ مَنْزِلٍ إِلَى مَنْزِلٍ.

سَأَلْتُ الْعَبْدَ الصَّالِحَ ع وَ هُوَ بِالْعُرَيْضِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ إِنِّي قَدْ تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً وَ كَانَ تُحِبُّنِي فَتَزَوَّجْتُ عَلَيْهَا ابْنَةَ خَالِي وَ قَدْ كَانَ لِي مِنَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَلَدٌ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى بَغْدَادَ فَطَلَّقْتُهَا وَاحِدَةً ثُمَّ رَاجَعْتُهَا ثُمَّ طَلَّقْتُهَا الثَّانِيَةَ ثُمَّ رَاجَعْتُهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِهَا أُرِيدُ سَفَرِي هَذَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ بِالْك
“I once asked Allah’s virtuous servant (a.s.), when he was in al-‘Arid, (name of a place) saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I married a woman who loved me. I then married the daughter of my maternal uncle and from the woman I had a son. I returned to Baghdad and divorced her once, then
سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ ظَاهَرَ مِنِ امْرَأَتِهِ خَمْسَ مَرَّاتٍ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ فَقَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ع مَكَانَ كُلِّ مَرَّةٍ كَفَّارَةٌ قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ ظَاهَرَ مِنِ امْرَأَتِهِ ثُمَّ طَلَّقَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَهَا عَلَيْهِ كَفَّارَةٌ قَالَ لَا قَالَ وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الظِّهَارِ عَلَى الْحُرَّةِ وَ الْأَمَةِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قِيلَ فَإِنْ ظَاهَرَ فِي شَعْبَانَ وَ لَمْ يَجِدْ مَا يُعْتِقُ قَالَ يَنْتَ
“I once asked one of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about the case of a man who forms al-Zihar about his wife five times or more. He (the Imam) said, Tor every time there is expiation.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I asked him (the Imam) about a man who forms al- Zihar about his wife,
خَرَجْنَا بِسَمَكٍ نَتَلَقَّى بِهِ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ع وَ قَدْ خَرَجْنَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ وَ قَدْ قَدِمَ هُوَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ لَهُ[1] فَقَالَ وَيْحَكَ يَا فُلَانُ لَعَلَّ مَعَكَ سَمَكاً فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ يَا سَيِّدِي جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَقَالَ انْزِلُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ لَعَلَّهُ زَهْوٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَأَرَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ ارْكَبُوا لَا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِيهِ وَ الزَّهْوُ سَمَكٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ قِشْرٌ.

Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali from his uncle Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “Ishaq, fisherman, narrated to me the following, ‘Once we went out with fish to meet abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.). We went out of al-Madinah and he (the Imam) was coming from his jou
اصْطَحَبَ الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ خُنَيْسٍ وَ ابْنُ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ فِي سَفَرٍ فَأَكَلَ أَحَدُهُمَا ذَبِيحَةَ الْيَهُودِ وَ النَّصَارَى وَ أَبَى الْآخَرُ عَنْ أَكْلِهَا فَاجْتَمَعَا عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فَأَخْبَرَاهُ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمَا الَّذِي أَبَى قَالَ أَنَا قَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ.
“At one time I travelled with al-Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunays and ibn abu Ya’fur. One of them used the flesh of the animal slaughtered by Jews and Christians and the other abstained. They both went to visit abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and informed him of their story. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Which one of you abstained?’ He (one of the
لَا تَجِبُ الدَّعْوَةُ إِلَّا فِي أَرْبَعٍ الْعُرْسِ وَ الْخُرْسِ وَ الْإِيَابِ وَ الْإِعْذَارِ[3].
“Inviting (people for food) is not obligatory except for four occasions. Such occasions are: weddings, the birth of a child, circumcisions, and returning from a journey.’”
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص الْوَلِيمَةُ فِي أَرْبَعٍ الْعُرْسِ وَ الْخُرْسِ وَ هُوَ الْمَوْلُودُ يُعَقُّ عَنْهُ وَ يُطْعَمُ وَ الْإِعْذَارِ وَ هُوَ خِتَانُ الْغُلَامِ وَ الْإِيَابِ وَ هُوَ الرَّجُلُ يَدْعُو إِخْوَانَهُ إِذَا آبَ مِنْ غَيْبَتِهِ. - وَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى أَوْ تَوْكِيرٍ[1] وَ هُوَ بِنَاءُ الدَّارِ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ.
’Food can be prepared for four kinds of ceremonies. It is for a wedding, birth of a child for whom ‘Aqiqah is offered and fed to deserving people, circumcision of a male child, and returning of a man from a journey, for which he invites his brothers (in belief) after his absence.’ In another Hadith it is said that it i
سَوِيقُ الْعَدَسِ يَقْطَعُ الْعَطَشَ وَ يُقَوِّي الْمَعِدَةَ وَ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ دَاءً وَ يُطْفِئُ الصَّفْرَاءَ وَ يُبَرِّدُ الْجَوْفَ وَ كَانَ إِذَا سَافَرَ ع لَا يُفَارِقُهُ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ ع إِذَا هَاجَ الدَّمُ بِأَحَدٍ مِنْ حَشَمِهِ[2] قَالَ لَهُ اشْرَبْ مِنْ سَوِيقِ الْعَدَسِ فَإِنَّهُ يُسَكِّنُ هَيَجَانَ الدَّمِ وَ يُطْفِئُ الْحَرَارَةَ.
“Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, sawiq of lintels calms down thirst, makes the stomach strong and there is cure for seventy illnesses in it. It abolishes yellowish fluid and gives coolness to the stomach. He (the Imam) would not travel without it. He (the Imam) said that when blood becomes excited with any of one’s a
مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ مُعْتَمّاً تَحْتَ حَنَكِهِ يُرِيدُ سَفَراً لَمْ يُصِبْهُ فِي سَفَرِهِ سَرَقٌ وَ لَا حَرَقٌ وَ لَا مَكْرُوهٌ.
He said, "Whoever leaves his home, intending a journey, with trust under his chin (meaning he has good intentions), he will not be afflicted with theft, fire, or anything disliked during his journey."
خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِلَى يَنْبُعَ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ رَأَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ خُفّاً أَحْمَرَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ مَا هَذَا الْخُفُّ الْأَحْمَرُ الَّذِي أَرَاهُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ خُفٌّ اتَّخَذْتُهُ لِلسَّفَرِ وَ هُوَ أَبْقَى عَلَى الطِّينِ وَ الْمَطَرِ وَ أَحْمَلُ لَهُ قُلْتُ فَأَتَّخِذُهَا وَ أَلْبَسُهَا قَالَ أَمَّا فِي السَّفَرِ فَنَعَمْ وَ أَمَّا فِي الْحَضَرِ فَلَا تَعْدِلَنَ بِالسَّوَادِ شَيْ
“I once traveled with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), to Yanbu‘. When he (the Imam) came out, I saw him wearing a red al-Khuff (half-boot). I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what kind of shoe is this red shoe which I see you wearing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al- Khuff (half-boot) which
قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع الْعَقِيقُ أَمَانٌ فِي السَّفَرِ.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Agate is safety on a journey.’”
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّا لَنُسَافِرُ وَ لَا يَكُونُ مَعَنَا نُخَالَةٌ فَنَتَدَلَّكُ بِالدَّقِيقِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِنَّمَا الْفَسَادُ فِيمَا أَضَرَّ بِالْبَدَنِ وَ أَتْلَفَ الْمَالَ فَأَمَّا مَا أَصْلَحَ الْبَدَنَ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِفَسَادٍ إِنِّي رُبَّمَا أَمَرْتُ غُلَامِي فَلَتَّ لِيَ النَّقِيَّ بِالزَّيْتِ فَأَتَدَلَّكُ بِهِ.

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ أَشَدَّ مَا يَهُمُّ بِالْإِنْسَانِ إِذَا كَانَ وَحْدَهُ فَلَا تَبِيتَنَّ وَحْدَكَ وَ لَا تُسَافِرَنَّ وَحْدَكَ.

إِذَا اتَّخَذَ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ شَاةً أَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ بِرِزْقِهَا وَ زَادَ فِي أَرْزَاقِهِمْ وَ ارْتَحَلَ الْفَقْرُ عَنْهُمْ مَرْحَلَةً فَإِنِ اتَّخَذَ شَاتَيْنِ أَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ بِأَرْزَاقِهِمَا وَ زَادَ فِي أَرْزَاقِهِمْ وَ ارْتَحَلَ الْفَقْرُ عَنْهُمْ مَرْحَلَتَيْنِ فَإِنِ اتَّخَذُوا ثَلَاثَةً أَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ بِأَرْزَاقِهِمْ وَ ارْتَحَلَ الْفَقْرُ عَنْهُمْ رَأْساً.

“Once, a man said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I once travelled to Makkah and my travel mate, who was a friend, on the way became ill very seriously and I looked after him. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَلَكاً رِجْلَاهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ السُّفْلَى مَسِيرَةَ خَمْسِمِائَةِ عَامٍ وَ رَأْسُهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ الْعُلْيَا مَسِيرَةَ أَلْفِ سَنَةٍ يَقُولُ سُبْحَانَكَ سُبْحَانَكَ حَيْثُ كُنْتَ فَمَا أَعْظَمَكَ قَالَ فَيُوحِي اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِلَيْهِ مَا يَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ مَنْ يَحْلِفُ بِي كَاذِباً.
“Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Allah has an angel whose legs are on the lowest earth. The length of his leg is a distance of five hundred years’ journey and his head is in the highest
قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنِّي جَعَلْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي شُكْراً لِلَّهِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ أُصَلِّيهِمَا فِي الْحَضَرِ وَ السَّفَرِ أَ فَأُصَلِّيهِمَا فِي السَّفَرِ بِالنَّهَارِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي أَكْرَهُ الْإِيجَابَ أَنْ يُوجِبَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ قُلْتُ إِنِّي لَمْ أَجْعَلْهُمَا لِلَّهِ عَلَيَّ إِنَّمَا جَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى نَفْسِي أُصَلِّيهِمَا شُكْراً لِلَّهِ وَ لَمْ أُوجِبْهُمَا عَلَى نَفْ
“I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘I have made it upon myself to perform two Rak‘at Salat (prayer) as thanksgiving to Allah at home or on a journey’ if on a journey I can perform them during the day. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, you can do so.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘I dislike a man’s making it obligatory upon him
